TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

mekon:
Hi.Dieseldog6.! No I don’t recall Kevin or Alan but I’ve just put the phone down to Gerry Perry who drove for Dines and knows 'em both so maybe you know Gerry?? We tended to work on the same firm but he’s broke ranks at the moment and is on for MVT car transporters…I do remember De Costa…he was the same era as John Arnett.

John had a place in Curriers Close Coventry doing the Massey Ferguson tractors out of Banner Lane. He also had a warehouse in Rugby for the storage and distribution of the calor gas heaters from spain.

Mekon… Don, nice to see you on here, I used to drive for Dines of Bicester when I lived in Banbury, although we didn’t know each other, you may have known 2 friends of mine , Kevin and Alan Tagg who werer also on Dines, I also did a stint at Compton’s. I used to think that Scania of yours was the dogs do da’s.
John Arnett, now there’s a name from the past, I know I should know more about him, but I can’t recal what!!! age thing I guess.
Do you remember a bloke from Coventry with a 2800 DAF, De Costa Transport, yellow and Blue, used to do Spain back then?

Truckerash !
Superb pictures, especially the one of the Hercocks Daf !
Me being from leicester i can remember Hercocks very well situated behind leicester tigers rugby ground on the welford rd.
As a young lad i can just about remember Hercocks swapping there AEC Mandators for F86s and F88s. Then after the 86s an 88s they got 5 brand new F10s on a T plate then another 5 on a Vs an W reg plus numerous F7s. But the best thing about your priceless photo’s is i never new they had any Dafs, can’t ever remember seeing one.
I used to know quite a few and still do know a lot of there old drivers.
They sold the site to fina, then they were market bosworth haulage, darby white, houston transport (in conjunction with jimmy houston from doncaster), arrivehaul then finally Pickarbys.
Cheers… :stuck_out_tongue:
Ps Do you have any pics of Pinnacle international, or W smith haulage of leicester

and for you London boys:
Anyone know this bloke MALTRANS?

Is this THE classic Dover photo?
Subby pulling another company trailer. Its a supercube, so he’s probably had the “crap” run. Left on Tuesday, punched down to Italy. One tip then 5 or 6 tiles collections, then up to Novara to top up with groupage. Then if he’s lucky, out by Friday night!
He’s had a “crap” run back up, so he’s late getting into Dover which means he cant pick up the “glamorous” hitchiker standing by the truck :frowning: :frowning:

And finally…this will get you all guessing
Especially for you AXORMAN. Are you watching Ron■■?
What is this all about?

if you ever loaded at Spain TIR (other firms were probably the same) their loaders always impressed when they got the sides up, got up their ladders and filled in any spare space with cartons, tubes, small bales - you name it, couldn’t get a ■■■ paper between as they say

first time i was in a spain tir depot, maybe alicante ?i’m not sure, i arrived first thing in the morning and was told to open the trailer up right away, so i thought i would be heading up the road for home nice and early only for to be still there late into the evening waiting on all those wee rolls and shoe boxes to be squeezed in.

The brown 141 Scania was run by a guy from Wexford called Cambell Bowden

What about Dukes, Carna, East West, Persitts, Millars?

Connolly’s used to run beef to Teheran in the '70’s.
In about '69-'70,before I started on the M/E,I used to do recovery work an the M6 at Keele MSA and would get talking to guys that did Turkey in AEC 8 leggers with drags on,Fridge Freight, can anyone remember that far back?
Double manned,NO sleeper cab?

here you go Ian, Fridged Freight! They ran some awesum rigs. A lot were day cabbed, all the AEC’s were and some of the Vabis’s had sleepers. They bought one of Asians old Vabis’s, fitted it with fridge boxes and sent it bacck to the desert! MAD…hi mate, the vabis that john got from asians transport came from hingham norfolk, and they never went to the middle east/dessert, i have doudle checked, sorry mate that is wrong, (family) should know.

please note: this photo is from Martin Phippard

Oh no…im slipping back a few years with these older pics so what about Lowes then? They did mostly NAFFI stuff to Germany, but i saw them in Italy occassionaly.
