TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

Hi, Chris Turnbull (Worpletinger)used to do M/E in an MAN with a dragon painted on the roof spoiler, while on his travels he met Nicky (she is German) who became his co-driver  He did quite a bit for DT’s running to Germany, his last truck was an F16 with rather a ‘heavy’ colour scheme( it has been shown on TN somewhere) Chris packed it in some tine in the early 90’s because he could no longer replace his truck every 3 years without putting cash with the unit for the deposit. They were last heard off driving bakers vans in Germany.

Quite right Gavin, before Chris bought the M.A.N. back in the seventies he had a Ford Transcontinental and subbied for Dow Freight in their colours with the word, I think it was MILLOY on the illuminous headboard. He did mainly Turkey, Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul on the Ford contract and the red Welsh dragon was also painted on the front. He came from the Bridgend area of South Wales and I think that any driver who had met Chris would of described him as a gentleman.
I should of thought that he had retired by now but it’s good to know that he is still earning a crust  , I hope that they are both well as they were both amazing people.
Where abouts on Trucknet did you see a photo of his F16 with the " heavy " colour scheme ? I would like to see that.
As regards a Wolpertinger, I now remember seeing one in a glass case ( dead and stuffed of course ) in a bar in Bavaria somewhere, could it of been in that little guesthaus at Waidhaus  .
B.T.W. Gavin did you receive the two P.M.s that I sent to you on the 8th July  .
Regards Steve.

MAT that’s right, I’d stick my neck out and say Birkart’s might have been one of the others? We worked for Gentransco/Danzas - anyone remember Wally Crowe from Preston, had burgundy coloured MANs on for them?

I remember he was due for a bollocking for something one Friday, and had to go around to their main office on United Road to see John Powell the MD, and waltzed in there with a big rip in his jeans arse and covered in muck from loading in the morning, proper old school haulier

Hi Andy, I remember seeing Crowe’s bergundy M.A.N.s and I always thought how well they looked, I seem to remember that they were always clean and smart, was he from Bamber Bridge ? and how many trucks did he have ?.
Were there not five big sheds in M.I.F.T ? I have a feeling that Gondrand might of been in there as well.
I was in there one day when they closed down the drivers toilets and free shower block because they were in such a disgusting state and I mean really digusting. The sorry thing was that it was only drivers who ever used them  .
Regards Steve.

i think wally had 2 or 3 but not sure - you’re right they were always kept well, proper signwriting etc,
i reckon if ash would get his head out of that new book for 2 minutes he’d find a photo or two, easy

i’m pretty sure there were 6 sheds in total at MIFT, and of course the customs house near the gate,
unfortunately it doesn’t surprise me about the showers :unamused: own worst enemies sometime ain’t we?

This should start a few memories flowing.

Hi
Steve, yes I did get the pm’s thanks. I am still working on the details.

Chris Turnbull’s last F16 was painted in a darkish yellow a dark green and a dark brown or purple.I thought it made the truck look depressing ‘Wagner-ish’ he didn’t :unamused: I can’t remember where I saw it (Ithink Worpletinger had been removed so it was probably after he sold it) it may have been on one of those pic’s for sale sites,(taken at Dover)I’ll try and work it out.
Gavin

Steve -Chris Turnbulls F16 is on ‘truckphotos4sale’ - page 29 pic no.761 I am sure that was his last truck

I have just come across this thread and apent most the afternoon reading through it.So who ever started this thread 47 pages ago,you are to blame for me getting no jobs done. I must look throught this fantastic site more !!
When i was about 10,i used to travel all summer hols with my uncle on his coach (Seamarks of Luton) and on fridays and saturdays, used to London to Dover and Dover to London on sundays and mondays.Reading this reminds of all the trucks we used to pas on A2. Aston Clinton Haulage,Russell Davies,Brain,Peter Roff,Cavewood,Rokold,Beresford (loaded with JCBs),Geoff Gilbert,Swains of Stretton,Whittle and Hungarocamion. It was funny,‘cos we always met Vauxhall Motors’ TMs going through Canterbury and both used to wave, being from Luton. It was strange truck drivers and coach drivers ackowledging each other.
Can anyone tell me if Cheveralls Transport from Luton (mainly MANs i think) used to run continental?
We used to night stop Dover on a saturday and go foot passenger to Calais. It was great for a lad my age then.I wish i had known that 12 years later i would be doing shuttles to South of France twice a week. :unamused:
Great thread with great pics and stories.Keep them comin please.

Yeah Cheveralls out of Luton did do European work – friend of mine worked on there (Alan Barton “Big Daddy”) before going to ACH in Stone Aylesbury !!

Cheers Big Leggy.I thought they did.A mate off mine worked there when we left school, refurbishing containers.

this 89 of white trux was my dad’s for a long time his name was Tony Buckle

BuckleJ. Brilliant pics.Thirty years later they still look the part. Unlike todays motors they were fun to drive.

Great pictures! I noticed the HUdson trailer has super singles on, they must have been quitenew/rare back then.
Also love the OA/DA Brothers Fridge, looks very International.

great pictures, and good to see this thread still going. Shame some pictures had to be removed, and couldn’t be shared with enthusiasts, still money is the only important thing to some people eh…■■? Still, proves how strong the interest is, how many pages? C’mon Ash, lets have some more.

I used to drive a 3.5 tonne flatbed or van in the 80’s … empty down to Bologna,Milan or Turin , put a couple of pallets on for Ford in the UK and then one hit it back.

Any of you artic drivers remember the little vans flying past ■■

Hey that is ME …I still live in Banbury…the truck NAR 608P was bought from Scantrucks the day Pan Express traded it in,by JAT Storage & Distribution ( John Arnett Transport ) of Coventry. It stayed in its white livery until Infradex of Hoddesdon bought out JAT and they resprayed it red.

I went with the truck to Infradex ‘doing’ the calor gas heaters out of spain. don ( now on EM Rogers )

dieseldog6:
El Sumo… there was a guy in Banbury drove for Pan Express had a 140 Scanny real nice too, that was around 1977/78, can’t remember his name though. used to park in the lay-by just before the cafe on the left if you were coming from Adderbury.

Hi I owned NAR 608P in the end, I bought it from the dealer Malcom Harrison when it had a gearbox problem (namely it jumped out of top gear)!

Sorry about the pic quality

Here it is on the right somewhere in France enroute to Barcelona for Southern transport (STS) driven by Paddy Keoghan (AKA Sandals)

Regards Pat

Mekon… Don, nice to see you on here, I used to drive for Dines of Bicester when I lived in Banbury, although we didn’t know each other, you may have known 2 friends of mine , Kevin and Alan Tagg who werer also on Dines, I also did a stint at Compton’s. I used to think that Scania of yours was the dogs do da’s.
John Arnett, now there’s a name from the past, I know I should know more about him, but I can’t recal what!!! age thing I guess.
Do you remember a bloke from Coventry with a 2800 DAF, De Costa Transport, yellow and Blue, used to do Spain back then?

Dieseldog6

Pat…I drove NAR 608P from December 1977 till January 1981 so it must have been driver abuse that did the gearbox hi !!!

Pictured in its prime…on route to Spain .
