What■■?..you mean it isnt■■?

When did that change then??

THE GUY DRIVING SHU SHU BABY IN THE EARLY 90,S WAS A SOUTHREN I HAD TO MEET HIM AT RUDNA SERVICES IN CHECK WITH PERMITS AND TELL HIM WHERE TO GET HIS TURK VISA IT WAS BRIGHT YELLOW HE WAS PULLING FOR PRIORS

Lonewolf… were you running down to Spain the day the Space Shuttle blew up, 1986? I seem to remember someone pulling a Brinor trailer, with a Transcon, catching me up between Narbonne and Perpingon (spelling) and calling me up on the CB to tell me about it, we then stopped later for a brew, just before the border, could this have been you. I was driving for Richard Ford at the time, but had Bickenhill Transport Services on the door, 2800 DAF.

1986 no probably not it would have been a couple of years later. I was only 21 then.

Yeah I knew 57W had been painted yellow after my time I thought it looked awful grrr

Lonewolf,

Not trying to glamourise the man, but Mr Francis was a full time villian, not the Arthur Daley or Del Boy type usually associated with London transport firms.

Wasnt this the chap shot dead outside his courier firm in bermondsy about 4-5 years ago. Cant remember the details but think he was involved or accused of being ■■■■■■■ in the brinks mat bullion robbery

A lot of people claimed to have been involved in the Brinks Mat, there were only 3 or 4 blokes involved in the actual robbery & the main man was Micky McIlvoy, he was helped by his brother in law who had a cab firm in the Walworth area & another bloke, then there was the security guard on the inside, a few others, Kenny Noye, Micky lawson & Brian Reader for example, got involved after the fact & helped launder the gold, McIlvoy was only expecting to net a couple of hundred grand in cash & was well out of his league with half a ton of bullion (as were the others as they all got locked up) I think being involved in the Brinks Mat robbery is the SE London equivalent of knowing ‘the twins’ in the East End :unamused:

I know this stuff from books & tv documentaries, it is of particular interest to me as I am from Walworth myself, I assure that I am not in awe of any of these people or a wannabe gangster, in fact I happen to think that they’re all a bunch of losers, after all none of them are particularly good at being gangsters as they all kept getting theirselves locked up, surely the idea is to stay out of prison, that said I wouldn’t be lippy to any of them in case I got a slap

Anyway back to the esteemed Mr F, whatever he was or wasn’t involved in, he was a ‘face’ & you crossed him at your peril, that much I do know.

I’m a Londoner myself (Notting Hill) and I couldn’t agree more with these comments about the so called adulation these villains get !!

Far bigger and more succesful crooks are those sat behind computers in the City of London banking district !!

Having never done any Continental work myself I’m hoping one of you lads can help me out with a company name.
Sometime in 1999 Geoff Reyner’s bought a 2 year old Globetrotter from a UK haulier? with a name something like “Trowogger” does any of you know of a firm with a similar name to this, it was a red 4 wheel unit and I think they did a lot of Austrian work. I’ve just searched this entire thread hoping to find them, now it’s starting to bug me.
Another place I was surprised not to see on here was Hauser’s from Trafford Park, does anyone have any pics of theirs.
And did Fredrick Carson’s of Trafford Park do any Continental work ?

You certainly got me thinking TIPIT with the name "Trowogger " or was it Wuffengger or something like that.
Back in the 80’s and the 90’s a Welsh owner driver that I once had the pleasure of working with had a two tone green Globetrotter with a red Welsh dragon on it and something like the name “Trowogger” or Wuffenger. I asked him what it meant and I think that he said it was a ficticious animal that lived in the Bavarian Forest a bit like the Yeti or a Gremlin or The Haggis that lives in the forests of Scotland. Maybe Brit Pete or K.W. or somebody can clarify this.
Chris and his German wife Nikky who also shared the driving, used to run down to Turkey in the 80’s and the last time that I saw them they came around to our house for a shower which was sometime in the 90’s they were doing a lot of Austria then.
Hauser from Trafford Park, I.I.R.C. it was P. Hauser ( Paul ? ) now you are going back a bit to the early seventies or even sixties. I remember that they did a lot of work to Germany and had some subbies one of whom was Stan Warmbold  .
Regards Steve.

Hauser was a Swiss living in UK who had a place in Manc ,freight forwarding & warehousing doing mainly Swiss. The story goes that he bought the best trucks ,at the time ,& paid his drivers top rates with good conditions of work. He was gutted many years later when he discovered that they had been ripping him off from
day one . So he got rid of the whole fleet & subbed the work out forever more .Allegedly .

Thanks for the quick replies, as regards that wierd name I’m almost sure it began with a “T” and there was “gg” in the middle, the rest could have been just about anything. The reason I mentioned “Hauser’s” is because while working for British Rail in Manchester in '72 “Hauser’s” use to park 2 dark green units up at the Ardwick Goods Yard and it allways stuck in my mind that one of them was a Foden (with the forward sloping twin windscreen.) Then around 7 years ago I was delivering to Hauser’s Warehouse off Ashburton Rd, and asked who I thought was the booking in clerk there if they were once based at Ardwick. It turned out he was the owner and I think his name was Paul. I was amazed how half way through telling me how he’d stopped running his own lorries, he answered the phone and immediatly began speaking another language fluently. Now it makes sense with what you say Harry untill now I thought he was English, a short fella who looked a bit like Norris in Coronation St… I.I.R.C.

Would the firm be Trawöger ?

browncow2:
Would the firm be Trawöger ?

That’s the name, thanks for sorting that out for me.

I’ve just been able to look them up on Google but their website doesn’t tell you much.
Do you know if any of their wagons are based in the UK ?

Glad to have helped out.It was a name that I remembered seeing a good few years ago,so unfortunately I can’t answer your UK question.

Well done Browncow 2, obviously it’s not the name that Chris Turnbull had on his Globetrotter. Does anybody remember seeing Chris and Nikky on their travels in the 80’s/90’s ?,
and whats the name of that fictitious German furry thing that lives in the forest ?
I am fairly sure that Hauser had a warehouse in M.I.F.T in the 80’s  .

Paul Hauser
P Hauser & Company - International Freight Hauliers

Paul Hauser first came to Manchester in 1945 at the end of World War II. Born in 1895, a native of Basle in Switzerland, an academic high flyer and sportsman, he had completed an international transport apprenticeship in Basle, he began work for the Danzas Company in Switzerland. During the war he had operated a convoy protected sea trade out of Liverpool, and at the end of the war decided to set up his own business in a premises in Timperley (near Altrincham, in Trafford), assisted by his wife Helen. Various moves followed - to Brazennose Street, then Princess Street, then Whitworth Street (all in city centre Manchester), and then back out to Trafford House in Stretford. The proximity of Stretford to the railway, the Manchester Ship Canal, Trafford Park, and later to the M62 Motorway, made it self evident that this was the best place to site an international hauliers business.
Hauser set up the first real rail freight link, “door to door” as he called it, and in the 1940s was able to guarantee a 10 delivery, of any size, from Manchester to anywhere in Europe. The company eventually acquired its own rail goods terminal at Ardwick East Goods Station, and soon developed a successful road transport of bulk chemicals from the nearby Shell refinery at Carrington.
In 1952 Hauser’s became a Limited Company, and by now was delivering throughout Europe, Asia Minor and the Middle East, and had opened depots in London and Harwich. In 1973 a n office was opened at Stanstead Airport to deal with air freight.
Paul’s son Michael took over from his father and became chairman of the Hauser Group in 1981. That year the company moved to a purpose built larger depot at Manchester International Freight Terminal, and opened an office at the Port of Dover. Success expansion saw depots and offices opened at Sheffield, Romford, Cannock and Bradford. In 1995 the company added Hauser Forwarding Limited at Trafford Park.
Today, Hauser’s have a turnover in excess of £17 million and deliver about 100,000 annual consignments to 1600 customers in 43 countries worldwide - with guaranteed speed and reliability.

Hi Andy, without the help of the 12th man or the physio we have a result  .
Wolpertinger Transport was the name on Chris Turnbull’s Globetrotter, I have just done a Google on a Wolpertinger as I have never seen one before and they look more scary than furry.
M.A.T. were also in M.I.F.T.
There were a couple of Wallies in there :unamused: but I can’t remember any of them working in the cafe which was on the right as you went in next to the railway line.
Regards Steve.

MAT that’s right, I’d stick my neck out and say Birkart’s might have been one of the others? We worked for Gentransco/Danzas - anyone remember Wally Crowe from Preston, had burgundy coloured MANs on for them?

I remember he was due for a bollocking for something one Friday, and had to go around to their main office on United Road to see John Powell the MD, and waltzed in there with a big rip in his jeans arse and covered in muck from loading in the morning, proper old school haulier
