TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

Dieselcowboy What’s the old boys name on Beresford. He is a legend in his own lunchtime.

I was just wondering what his name was too, as you say he was a well known character as well. In fact I remember the last time I saw him was about 20 years (Bloody Hell, where’s the time gone) ago, in the wheelhouse, I believe he was going a bit funnyat the time, because as I remember it he was wanting to pick a fight, with anybody that was. Sad really,

Gentlemen The drivers name was Jack Kelly I enjoyed 4 trips abroad with him in 82/83 and supplied the photos earlier in the thread to diesel cowboy.Agreed he was a legend with years of experience and stories but was never one for trouble .Are we talking about the same fella?.I think prior to Beresford’s he worked for Starr Roadways if thats any help.

Hi Rod.
Thanks, yes of course Jack Kelly that was the Man. Please don’t think for one moment I was calling him, as you say he was a really pleasant Guy, and very good company. But I was a little concerned when I last saw him. He was different, we sat together for hours that night in the Wheelhouse, I got along fine with him but he was getting a bit stroppy with quite a few people on that night. How is he now? Still going strong I hope . A.P.

Archie I wish I knew, one of my biggest sins losing touch with him after intoducing me to Europe and giving me such an insight into continental lorry driving .Do wonder what happened to him when Beresford sold up .He lived in Trentham Stoke but was originally from Bolton IIRC.Would greatly appreciate any info on his whereabouts.

I well remember the truckstop at Carisio in Italy , Brilliant food , Wine and Midges.

Me too . Was OK for a weekend

Got woken up one Sunday morning though @ 0800hrs after a Saturday night on the Frizzante :open_mouth: to move the trucks into formation parking so that an updated photo could be taken for the wall behind the bar to hang alongside the one that was from the 70’s/80’s. This was the result and a very similar photo did adourn the wall when i was frequenting the Truck park and restaurant :sunglasses: .
Remember a Cardiff International driver, unsurprisingly being none too impressed with this idea and taking him about 2 hrs to rise and move. Never got in the pic after that though

Anyone know if its still there  , not been since '98 ish :frowning:

and sticker

still closed monday’s

here is a photo i took at scan trucks south mimms of Brian yeardleys VOLVO.
around 1986 the driver didn’t mind me taking the photo but he wasn’t a happy bunny. I think his drawbar trailer was broken down, he couldn’t understand why i wanted to take the photo but i’m glad i did.

Hi everyone. I feel that I need to apologise to you all for “just disappearing”.
There’s no excuse really, I started a great thread on here and then just got into something else away from Trucknet which has taken up all my time.
I am well chuffed to see well over 100.000 hits now on the thread proving that indeed the 1980’s was the best time for truckin!
I need to post more photos  and will try to do a “truckin in the 80’s” DOMESTIC thread as soon as I can.
In the meantime, I have posted another thread detailing my immediate plans.
Once again sorry to let you all down :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

heres a few more piccys to get you back in the mood and I’ve left 'um full size as a special treat

Went to Rome in this. Was a great old truck with “turbo intercooling”. All the other DAF 28’s we had were just “turbo’s”.

This is Mick “BIG BEN” Bennett who has sadly died. He had this 320 Roller from new and then converted it to a 6x2 tag with stacks! Sounded great! He was a huge British fan and always had the colours painted on his trucks. Probably get told to take 'um off on PC grounds if he were still around nowadays…

PARtricks were from Stanwick near Wellingboro’ but had a depot in Southampton. Maybe this pic should be on the S’oton hauliers threrad…
This photo taken near Victors restaurant, Spain.

Before I even started drivin HGV’s myself, I went to Portugal in this 111.
Pic taken in Oporto. Have to admit to drivin it up the motorways (at night only).

welcome back ash and thank god your back.

not a great deal. we had a couple of them tandem axle supercubes in their colours for groupage from Italy. Usually CAT stuff going out - forklifts, small wheeled loaders - and then up into the hills to load tiles and then into Milan to “top up” with what looked like giant sheets of Brillo pads…but I cant really remember what they were

hi ash, ,welcome back, i remember collecting floor tiles too, from a charming little place, i dont remember the name, all i do remember is it was north of verona… but not much, lol, i know that sounds stupid…i remember it being very hot outside, and this place was air conditioned, it felt like paradise…
from there i ran back to frejus, way over hours
anyways , enough of that,lol…

hi tony yes pole pos lol squibbys seem to be any were and every were back then lol

i woke up one morning pulled back the curtains and saw this had to take a photo havnt seen many mornings like this since

Superb pics as usual Ash,well done.

The Partricks pics bought back some memories as I used to see them passing through Kimbolton most days.

Their Globetrotter was an early one and the first that I saw on the road.

Do you have any pics of their White RoadCommander or ERF’s. They had a steel cabbed MW and ,I think,a left hand drive B series amongst others.

Or, do you have any David Abbott, who ran a varied fleet in an unusual grey and maroon livery.

Cheers Mark

i think i can say that i have the best memory of carisio. i met my wife who worked their

still together now

R .Slicker
I think someone who used to drive one of those mobile x ray machines married one of the girls who worked there also.

I don’t know if this photo is any interest to you but i took the photo of the white at south mimms service area ( before the truck stop was built ) about 1987 i think the guy worked for southern transport. the kenworth was at bell bar Herts in Brunts old yard
