If your so intelligent to know how the free market works and making such a fortune why the hell are you driving a lorry explain that one

What are you on about ?
I made a comment about guys who drive hgv who only do 8 hours are semi retired truck drivers
I dont even know many companys who even let this happen most of the big players will expect 12 hours out of there drivers setting you up for a standard 12 hour day

Why the hell indeed…?
It tops up my pension quite nicely (I’m 54) and was always something I fancied having a crack at…
BTW… I’m degree educated too.
Will I stay in the job? Some days I love it, other days I’ve just about stopped short of dragging my manager over the desk. Turns out the job I earned my pension at taught me some transferable skills insofar as a cat isn’t always skinned by the most direct method.
Am I JUST a driver? Always reminds me of calling all squaddies thick…
We’re all a bit more than JUST. If people see you like that, ask is it you?
Or do they just need educating?
Paywise most of us graft for the money, whether it be physically hardwork or simply hours away from home. As a collective, we do seem to be self defeating- but I’m relatively well paid. Always room to improve on that but it’s a good few bob more than I was earning as a production manager, and several grand less than I was earning in my old job: but then I was expected to run a team of lads and lasses, periodically be separated from family for 6 months at a time, be available 24 hours a day in extremis and occasionally get shot at in very hot places. Being shot at wasn’t the issue - but surely being vaguely ginger couldn’t we visit cooler climes?
I work for a big corporate. The job is OK. The management are the issue. But that’s being worked on …[emoji16]

Mangers in logics have always been a problem most have never drove a lorry in there life an they dont have to do it so they don’t care
As soon as you exept that load and it leaves the yard its your problem
If anything is wrong with that load and you end up infrount of a judge do you think they will stand by your side and defend you NO your on your own
I have respect for anyone who has been in the miltry
But pensions isnt why i get up an go to work
With all this covid are most of us going to even make it to get to enjoy a full pension
Plus if the country’ goses in to negative equity and banks charge you to keep your savings in the bank
Then they will charge you on your pension savings as well so is it even worth it ?
Funny that. Both my TM and site managers are ex drivers. Sadly that translates into if it was good enough for them then…
The thick so and so’s miss the fact they went into management cos they hated being messed about.
To be fair I wouldn’t do my TM’s job-too many whiny drivers [emoji1787]
As for the load…it doesn’t leave the yard until its done properly. If it isn’t it goes back on a bay…
Similar with defects.
Covid? Bit of a non issue for me…we had a fight with management to change a few things. Once that was done…
And the pension? Don’t knock it.
It’s what allows me to drag the TM over the desk, then walk away [emoji6]

I have a manger who is an ex driver
But even then he had the pick of the runs
Just because he knows how long things take dont mean he would do it
Alot of drivers are whinny and they get worse once there houses are payed off lol
I agree about the load going back on a bay but some places dont have weight bridges and depending on the load or trailer you never know
And just because it’s not full dont mean its not over
It dont take alot to be over on an axal if the rite thing is in the wrong place and you can’t always see eveything on your load in a box trailer or even know its weight
Yet again it will leave the yard and it is still all on your shoulders

Given what we move, we never come close to max weight.
Axle loads may be an issue…though I doubt it.

Your lucky that you always move the same product alot of others dont and more an more companys are doing back loads and going in to different sites collecting things of all sorts never running empty
It is alot Easyer than you relise to be over on an axal
I have never seen an artic over on max weight
But i have seen over on axals
Is that what you do just drive on to a bridge and check your max weight ?
Next time your on one drive your axals on one at a time and write the weights down

Why would I write axle weights down when I get a nice little print out?
Just possibly an axle could be over on a run back…but unlikely.
The occasions I’ve checked - no problems.
You’re moaning about weights… you do know you’re entitled to drive to the nearest weighbridge if you’re concerned?
Yes… the driver has a lot of responsibility and management are quick to slope shoulders.
But if you’re that unhappy…walk

Well primarily because two things I always loved were driving and travel, particularly foreign travel and when I started in 1986 it was the heyday of continental work so it was a chance to get paid for something I enjoyed doing anyway, plus it was a fairly well paying job at the time for something which did, and still does, require minimal training.
Even now I see graduate-entry jobs on offer which pay £8,000 a year less than I’m on and I don’t consider myself to be particularly well paid.
The point is though that it is rather futile petitioning the Government for wages to be a certain level because wage levels are not controlled by Government.

Where did he say he was making a fortune? Knowing how something works is hardly a radical concept. I know how democracy, my local big Tesco and the cooker works, doesnt exactly mean much.

He’s on decent money for only 40 hours 34k per year
My lowest wages ever in hgv was when i first passed my test i was on 38k for 48 hours per week
As years went by and job changes i up my wages
Yes it means more hours and week end shift but my life style has adjusted to how much i earn and i couldn’t be comftable on 34k now yes it would be nice to only do 40 hours per week but I’d suffer on only 34k

He stated in one of the forums he made something like 80k in the free market
I commented by saying if your able to make such a fortune in the free market why would u be driving hgv
If you think making 80k on a deal isnt making a fortune then you must be make alot more than that making 80k on the side on one deal would change my life
Fair enough, I didn’t see that.
Would pay off some of my debts I suppose

Who, me? I’ve never stated anything of the sort.If you really want to know, in the 2020/2021 tax year I’m expecting to gross around £18,000.

18k has a hgv driver is SHOCKING
Inless your fiddling tax as a limited company
Or actually not even a hgv driver

Driven more miles backwards than you’ve done forwards sonny.
As most on this forum know I only work 6-7 months a year. So I don’t earn as much as someone who works 12 months a year.
It’s not rocket science.

I doubt that you have drove more backwards than i have forwards LOL are you one more of theses drivers who like to compare there superiority complex
I’m class 1 driver my self ive done my share of going backwards on SHUNTING ALONE
That’s good for you only working 6-7 mouths per year but still only lower 30k for full time so i wouldn’t brag to much about your low earnings on here you may get attacked and sent a load of pay slips from guys who do less an earn more than you like i have sent to me in my forums LOL
Again, if you really want to know I’m salaried and on £30,000. I could earn more elsewhere, but they would expect more work out of me. As far as I’m concerned it’s reasonable for what I do. My point was that the petition you were touting support for, that the Government should set a minimum rate for HGV drivers of £15, falls down on the simple fact that in a free market economy, the Government does not set wage levels, therefore the petition is a complete waste of time.
