There’s a meat plant near the top so you’ll probably end up there someday. I’ve only ever took empty dolavs into it. Still wouldn’t fancy going up it empty when the road is greasy or a bit icy.

I’ve gone down Sutton bank and up staxton hill fully loaded loads, I always just went down on the exhaust brake all the way

There’s a limit as too how effective a Premium exhuast brake is, and 44ton down Staxton top is past it :open_mouth:

i’d bet the same gear it’ll go up in will be there or there abouts be able to hold it coming down

ya wanna try coming down in a ag tractor without an exhaust brake! then hit a false neutral at the top, then find out the hire trailer has defective brakes = the closest i’ve ever come to taking to a sand pit   i never did get the gears back until it leveled out at the bottom :open_mouth:

Trust Me it wont on a Premium, and I’m not a Premium hater, drove them for 11 years. But I did get to workout what there limitations were, and a steep hill up or down with a crappy old spud at 44ton was one off them.

As for the the offer to try with an AG Tractor, well thats jolly decent off you, but I’m afraid I’ll decline that generous offer on this occasion  leave it to the profesionals

I have never been near Sutton Bank but have looked at all the necessary on Google and feel confident in saying that I could get up it but wouldn’t ever come down it loaded.

As for the 2CV comments about handling, you should get an ARDS and join in the funcup. They do a 24 hour race for 2CVs at Snetterton, flat out all the way and twice round the clock, I am so glad I don’t cover that.

so long as you’ve got it slowed right down at the top, it isn’t an issue.

Never heard of anybody stuck going down it.

Anyone been up/down Southowram bank?

Yep, went up ther ein an ERF E14 with a load of stone on a flatbed. That was entertaining … in low first gear (Eaton twin split) it just spun the wheels and wouldn’t move.

Sutton Bank was a regular feature of childhood trips to Whitby and Sandsend for our holidays when I were a lad, and it was always built up as a big feature of the journey … getting a knackered Mk 2 Cortina, loaded with children and a weeks’ worth of stuff for a seaside holiday, to the top was a challenge even when they were relatively new!
As for 2cvs, I drove them on and off for twenty years and was involved in the 24 hour race a few years ago. Tremendous little cars.

A small diversion to the formidable Pass of the Cattle. Check out the warning sign.

Given the state of our trailers I wouldn’t want to take the risk with 27ish tonnes of concrete on the back.
