Is it not strange that caravans are banned from using it, but we still can even fully laden■■?
well I’d rather a truck went up there rather than an under powered car towing a caravan with everything including the kitchen sink, with the driver more interested in the scenery than the road…
philgor:
went up and down Sutton bank the other month in my car, and It normally make’s fun of hill’s, well 170bhp in 1500kg car, now this hill had it down in first gear to climb after the first hairpin, got to the 2nd hairpin at about 40mph…
I’ve been up Sutton Bank in any number of Citroen 2cvs no bother, with a whole 29bhp at my disposal.
Donnyboy:
All the times I’ve been down hit never seen a sand pit as for going up at 44 ton surprised u got traction
the sand pit i was on about is at the bottom of staxton hill. the only time i’ve had traction issues was when the midlift chucked it’s toys out of the pram and wouldn’t lift, turn off and back on and good to go.

fair point, but a 2cv does weigh about the same as a crisp packet…
p.s. a fellow mechanic introduced me to them, and the brilliant handling of them, awesome car’s to chuck around…
The trick to Sutton Bank is get in the correct gear on the last straight bit before the hill starts and then drop down a half gear (if you have splits) as you hit the hill and keep in it all the way up, the dash might light up like a Christmas tree but keep going
Sorry got crossed wires I was talking about going up Sutton bank never seen a sand pit at Sutton bank Stanton been up a few times in dry if its wet carry on a bit further and go through hunmanby

Where is this legendary hill?! I want a go! Fully loaded of course.
its around 3 miles east of Thirsk North Yorkshire, just outside Sutton under Whitestonecliffe on the A170 toward Scarborough.
Its a 25% gradient, take a look at Streetview (sutton under whitestonecliffe)

Caravans have reactive brakes, trucks have active brakes is the reason. You put your foot on the brake pedal and control the brake. Caravan brakes are operated on an overrun system
I’m suprised we’ve not had someone on here to say they aced the hill in a 4x2 maxed out MGW and didnt drop below 40mph with a eaton twin splitter to boot
…and if you go up that hill and wonder what all the fuss is about try this one next…
reserved for proper drivers only, will test your exhaust brake!!! only one HGV driver has dared to try it and they only got some of the way…
I’ve been up and down it in a car and if the roads were dead I’d give it a go in a artic , the bit I thought would be the worst is as u go up I think it’s the first hairpin left hander , could be a ■■■■ if you met someone coming down
This ■■■■■ is the guy you are thinking of. Think that has to go down as one of the most ultimate sat nav fails. It’s a cracking road that, I couldn’t get my car out of 1st gear on the climbs and its so steep I couldn’t see much beyond my bonnet.
Once had to back most of the way down Staxton Hill because an artic had lost traction going up and blocked the road.
The wrecker sent to rescue him had to do the same.
