Thing is, I have been away from Europe for 5 years now. I have no idea how things may have changed. But there were always bins in the rest areas when I was tramping. The thing that was getting really bad were the bottles. That seemed to be reaching epidemic proportions, and I see it happening more out here now, too.
Jimti, maybe you are just the unluckiest person alive then. I have never heard of it before, same as Mark. Still, if Volvos lawyers can try to blame the Mont Blanc on a cigarette, I suppose you can blame your fire on one, too.
Last I heard, most forest fires are either deliberately set, or are started by careless burning or careless use of firepits. I would love to shake the hand of the forensics expert who can find the evidence that a cigarette caused either your truck fire, Jimti, or your forest fire, Orys. To me, that man is a true hero who deserves to be knighted, honoured, given medals…
When are non smokers and reformed smokers going to climb down off their pedestals? Next thing, you will be saying it makes our urine more acidic and we are to blame for acid rain… If you are so wonderful, then how come you are such bloody whingers?

Intriguing, Orys. I never mentioned Poland…
Yes, I did that. It’s a good example: poor country with lack of bins and other cleaning services, yet it’s much cleaner than UK…

this is true, much more roadside parkings have proper bins in Europe than in UK. Still many don’t and yet they are clean…

I was reading recently an interview with a fire expert and he explained exactly how he finds the cause of fire.
But I can understand that you are not too kin to believe in that as here in UK, it’s usually wet. But in many countries (like Poland) forrests are really dry during hot summer and it’s very easy to start fire by dropping the cigarette end or empty glass bottle…

I must be I probably just made it all up and I’m just full of bovin manure. and cigarettes don’t cause fires!

Fuynny thing is I have never in all my years driving up and down the motorways of Europe seen an arsonist on the Central reservation or at the side of the motorway setting things alight, but oddly enough I have watched thousands of lit dog ends get thrown into both areas…Funny thing is I’ve also seen loads of fires in these same area’s as well. I guess the same rule applies to cigarettes starting fires as causing cancer. You just keep your head in the sand, it never happens

Shame on you, you lined up with the annoying Polish guy for that anti-smoking propaganda :>

I think that might be lost on some readers Orys, but I understand it.
