Truck driver killed on A1 as he changed tyre

You don’t expect to go to work, and not come home. I feel very sorry for the driver’s family.

’ Still driving, just on a different highway '.

Amen to that!

My thoughts entirely ^^^^^^
I went by the scene about 9, & the body was still on the carriageway with a sheet over him.
He entered the A1 that morning & never left.
RIP Mate …

If it wasn’t the driver it would just be a dead tyre fitter.

You serious?

Very sad news heart felt sympathy to the lads family R.I,P m8

Own Account Driver:
Not sure about the witnesses thing as I can’t see how someone changing a wheel is to blame for someone ploughing into them.

I guess to ascertain the culpability of the car driver; was the car being driven in some sort of boy-racer fashion, had anyone seen the driver playing with a mobile phone, was it freak accident due to a brief moment of crap driving, or may be another driver caused the car to swerve into the lorry.
One thing is for certain the lorry driver is in no way responsible and no criticism whatsoever should ever be levelled at him.

What a waste of a life. He may of just been getting the tyre size for the tyre services. Would be interesting if company expects driver to replace offside tyre when fitter would have the lane coned off.
Driving around, I know I am one of the few who on seeing somebody on the hard shoulder near the white line will pull into the middle lane or straddle both lanes, to avoid any chance of running anybody over, and to give the tail gating berk behind me a chance of avoiding hitting anybody too.

Reminds me of that post on here was it last week where that truck had a blow out on the M25 on the O/S and the driver gets out to investigate only for a truck to literally scrape past his hi-viz coat at 56mph :open_mouth:
RIP to the driver but no way would I attempt anything on the hard shoulder, even if it was on the N/S as you could get another truck arse end you as what happend to the artic tipper and the mechanic who came out to try and repair the fault just oast Junction 29 s/b on the M1 about 8 year ago.
The mechanics merc van was just like a crushed can of coke, the tipper body had pushed right through the cab of the broken down truck and the Volvo artic that had gone stright into the back of them his cab was right up against the trailer with no space between the front and the back where the bed is  Blood was dripping down off the steps as I drove passed n/b a few hours later and a bucket loader was picking up what looked like steel ingots or something similar off the motorway.
Horrible sight.

The cemetarys full of folks going above and beyond in the course of their duties or doing something that most would consider foolish but at the time was considered an acceptable risk.

Poor journalism aside (the DS3 occupants injuries are irrelevant), the driver of the car in the same way as if roles where reversed must now live the life sentence of seeing this incident replay ad infinitum in their own mind from the moment they wake up to the moment they fall asleep and even in the spaces inbetween.

If this incident was a pure accident then fair enough some solace can be taken from that but if there was a contributory factor of negligence, drink, using the phone, in car shenanigans etc then the DS3 driver should prepare themselves for further retribution. What form this takes is the right of the loved ones left behind. For now they can only grieve their loss until the dust settles and all the facts come to light.

RIP drive…

The truck was stopped right at the top end of the hard shoulder of the exit slip in to the works unit so was well away from the live running lane .

Yeah, was told by a guy that passed just after it occurred the truck was well off carriageway - almost in the works unit on side of A1(M) Sprotborough - south bound side is a council-type depot with a connecting bridge to VOSA/Police checkpoint on the north-bound side. So he was well off A1(M), probably thinking he was in a place of safety.

God only knows how the car careered into him - some kind of freak accident that is!!!

Rest In Peace Driver…

Can’t understand why everyone’s getting their hi-viz in a twist over a driver having to change a wheel. If it wasn’t the driver it would just be a dead tyre fitter.

You may have found that the tyre fitter would have called out the police to put a lane closure on because that is a seriously busy and seriously dangerous stretch of road.

It is just so bloody tragic that a fellow driver gets killed to me it does not matter where he was from, where he was going, who he worked for etc it is just so tragic.

I think what he meant was even if a tyre fitter had been called we’d still be looking at a fatality. Not that a dead tyre fitter isn’t as bad as a dead driver.

I hope so anyway.

Wouldn’t be a dead fitter as they wont do offside/dangerous side tyres without a lane closure.

Had a rear inner near side blowout last Tuesday night on the M1 just north of junction 18 (anyone see me?). When the highways turned up to make sure there was no rubber or pieces of my mudguard which had exploded in the road they waited until ATS turned up. They told me, as did the ATS person that any offside tyre requires a full lane closure but they’ll do a near side no problem.

Unfortunately for this driver, for whatever reason he got out and tried it himself with traffic whizzing by.

I saw a van driver doing one (nearside) in the inside lane of the 4 lane section of the M1 over J11. He didn’t even notify anyone as the gantries said the lane was active.

I thought all this CCTV they installed was supposed to stop all this. I remember when I was on the M6 with my old man and his red air line fell off and we blocked half the motorway off the cops were on their way before we got to the phone. When we explained the situation they said they’d already seen it.

…that is a seriously busy and seriously dangerous stretch of road.

Busy? Sometimes. 8am on a Friday morning? Yes.

Dangerous? Not really. No more so than any other bit of road.

Seriously, get a grip.

Connors got it spot on ,I pulled loads out of donny for years , that stretch from 37 down to m18 is often stop start , you have to have you wits about you for slowing traffic , after j36 I’d always pull out into lane 2 as they often be queuing ,stop start down to exit for m18.
Often ended up using m62 / m18 or m1 / m18 to get back to donny due to accident / delays on that stretch .
Thoughts for driver and everyone involved

I passed this around 09:30 Thursday and never thought for a minute that the driver was killed.
O/S/F area was mashed from exhaust forward. Plus he was as said earlier, On the slip road hardshoulder.
Poor sod. R.I.P.

Don’t believe he was changing a tyre all a firm like Allinsons won’t have there drivers changing tyres at the roadside and never seen there trailers carrying spares the word going round here is he was fastening buckles up what had come loose quite why he was doing that there I don’t know but I believe a woman has been arrested and mobile phone being checked into

RIP to the trucker.

R.I.P to the driver . Can never get me head round that cars, vans, lorries can drive for miles on end with no problems then as soon as something is parked on the hard shoulder someone goes and crashers into it.

Cant remember what its called, but there is a defined Phenomenon to do with drivers being drawn to vehicles parked on the hardshoulder, which is one of the reasons that the Wombles close the adjacent running lane.

It’s called not paying attention, ■■■■■■■ around with a CD, on your phone, reaching for your buttie’s, nodding off, adjusting satnav, wiping a fly crap off your dashboard etc…
