Truck driver killed on A1 as he changed tyre

Posted on Friday 5 February 2016
A truck driver has died after being struck by a car as he changed a tyre on the hard shoulder of the A1.

It happened yesterday morning just before 8am on the southbound carriageway, close to the Sprotbrough Works exit between junctions 36 and 37.

A white coloured Citroen DS3 car is reported to have left the carriageway and collided with the driver of a heavy goods vehicle.

The HGV driver, who was aged 59 and from Darlington, died of his injures at the scene. The female driver of the Citroen and a male passenger both suffered whiplash injuries and were taken to hospital.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses to the collision; in particular anyone who may have dashboard mounted cameras fitted to their vehicle, and were travelling between junctions 36 and 38 on the southbound carriageway of the A1, in the time prior to the incident.

Whiplash… Trying to screw money out of the bereaved.

I hope the car driver is treated the same way as any Hgv driver would be, arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken through the courts.

This ^^^^ and poor bugger.

How many uk company’s expect you to change a tyre in 2016!!! The same company’s who won’t pay for parking and then charge the drivers for damage to curtains when there cut in lay-bys I expect, shame on them.

Exactly! I thought the days of changing your own wheeels were long gone. Done it when I was young and knew no better, not a cat in hells chance today.

Just looked m8 ,I don’t recall seeing them carrying a spare ?

Exactly. If it was a European truck there is a good chance it would have one. Never notice them much on UK lorries.

Just me then

I thought that was just to help the tyre fitter by providing the wheel and tyre, and then carrying the knackered one back to base. Well that’s what happened when I carried the spare on my old trailer anyway ha.

You don’t expect to go to work, and not come home. I feel very sorry for the driver’s family.

’ Still driving, just on a different highway '.

Amen to that!

Don’t understand what would possess somebody to try and change an offside tyre on their own at the side of the A1? I’m all for a bit of DIY but talk about doing something more than the jobs worth. Only place you would find me is on the verge, well out of it waiting for the professionals. I sincerely hope he wasn’t pressured into attempting it by bosses.

Can’t understand why everyone’s getting their hi-viz in a twist over a driver having to change a wheel. If it wasn’t the driver it would just be a dead tyre fitter.

Not sure about the witnesses thing as I can’t see how someone changing a wheel is to blame for someone ploughing into them.

As sorry as I feel for the poor bugger, there’s no way I’d even consider changing a wheel on the hard shoulder. If it’s not a steer, drag it off the M/way or call for help.

R.I.P to the driver . Can never get me head round that cars, vans, lorries can drive for miles on end with no problems then as soon as something is parked on the hard shoulder someone goes and crashers into it.

He probably was just looking at the tyre not changing it. You know how the press always get it wrong.

Still a few companies about that pay a tyre changing bonus. Can’t believe the term whiplash was used in that article about a road fatailty. Away and shove your whiplash claim up your arse!
