Tramping v day shift

vikingpete:
Hi everyone, happy new year. Just wondering what people’s opinions are on tramping compared to day work? I’ve only done day work but am considering having a go at tramping this year. All opinions welcome please.

Thanks.

Not sure I’d consider a tramping job unless I was living with others who weren’t my wife and kids (e.g., parents, which I am now but hope soon not to be). Missing the wife has already been mentioned but if you live on your own and you’re gone from Monday to Friday, burglars will notice before long.

I’ve done one night out in the past, for a company that wanted stuff delivered a distance away, first thing in the morning. Didn’t make me very keen on the idea, but I was really talking about full-time tramping.

I was in army for a long time.
Left the Army and started tramping for 2 years.
I changed jobs in December so be home every night for the wife.
I lasted a few weeks and me wife told me I think your better of going back to tramping as your doing my head in been in house everyday lol.
I was so happy she said it first as she was doing my head in too.
So started back on tramping will be for the foreseeable future woohoo.

I think it depends what you as a family and couple are use too.

The difference between one night out, and full tramping, is a state off mind, I would imagine, as its such along time since I done anything other than full tramping, that if you do one night out ocasionally, you do feel that you are being inconvenienced.
With full tramping, or a regular couple of nights out each week, you have things with you to make your life away more comfortable, and because you know that is what you signed up for, you accept it. Its the little things that can make a difference, such as going for a shower, your wash bag, that you use on a daily or regular basis, has the shower gel deodorant toothpaste razor in it, you have a fresh towel and flannel and a pair of flip flops, stuff like this gets lost or left at home if you don’t use them regular.

Apart from the Army thing, that sound so familiar, though the Mrs had stuck it for several months, the few times I tried not tramping, before a collective decision was made to go back tramping

Muckaway:
My son is 5 in March and my daughter is 1 tomorrow. I only do days and I feel I’ve missed out on seeing them. I only get about 2 hours a worknight with them so I’m never applying for a tramping job. It would be almost impossible anyway as I’ve not got a class 1. I would like to but it’d be a waste of money at the moment.

My children are 18, 14 and 5, and yes I will concede that I’ve missed their childhoods, and cosy evenings with the Wife(the only 2 regrets I have about my work), but I don’t think that getting home late and rushing out early on day work, would have given Me a huge amount more time to spend with any of them. Though its each to their own, tramping has enabled My wife to stay at home(her choice) to raise the children, so possibly 100% of 1 parent, and 20% of the other, is better than 50 % from either parent. Just a thought, and a lifestyle choice

Try it and find out, you’ll know by the end of the first month of tramping if you love it or hate it

Agree with Robroy about the 15 hour days. If I did longer than 11 hour days I preferred to night out. With 4am starts I was up around 2.30 and a 30 minute drive each way didn’t leave me much rest time especially after a 15 hour day. Not all 15 hour days were nights out either.

Yeh but as said before, if you DO want to do it, at least give it a fair trial by doing it properly.
If you have no proper in cab kit, park in lay.bys or similar ■■■■ holes on 8hr 59, with no facilities nearby, do not eat properly and regularly, do not wash properly and regularly, and generally treat it like a ■■■■■■ endurance test (as many do :unamused: ) it will be a complete pain in the ■■■■, you will not last 5 mins (as neither would I)… unless of course you are some kind of tramp based masochist.
If done properly, and of course if it suits you, it aint as bad as some make out…maybe the endurance test guys.

Thanks. Some really useful opinions and advice there. I am edging towards having a go at tramping later on in the year. Robroy what do you include in your cab kit please?

Having managed to escape watching my kids grow up and the tears and tantrums that go with it I can honestly say tramping is the best thing ever.

As a male hunter gatherer it’s not natural to be at home tossing life off on facebook crowing about how little Johnny took his first steps or first dump without falling in the crapper.

The weekend quality time is even more special when I can relax at home in me string vest beating the shot out the wife.

Just sayin, although I do tend to toss life off on Tnuk a lot.

Totally agree. If your gonna do it then be prepared to stand your ground and not be rushed around. Take the time to find lorry parks rather than motorway service stations.

Go for it mate you got nothing to lose.
You make bit more money tramping too.
As I say, me and my wife are use to it as iv always worked away from home.
I find it not as boring married life as you both look forward to a Friday and plan stuff to do for the weekend.
Plus we wanna strangle each other if we’re with each other all the time.

In cab kit full list

Blow up doll, size11 stilettoes, xxl ladies underwear, UK guidebook to dogging sites, sado mas…ok I’m joking.

I’ve got most in cab kit (as I’ve done it too bloody long now :unamused: ) tv/dvd, kettle, fridge, coffee maker, toastie maker, microwave.
A lot of good kit is quite expensive, but I’ve had the same fridge and microwave for about 12 yrs now so good value, (although they were bought for me by a good firm I once worked for)
Carry plenty clean clothes, shoes, shower kit and towel, water, and of course food. A lot of the time I eat out, a pub meal, but the choice is there if you are stuck somewhere remote.
It’s as comfortable or as difficult as you make it yourself mate.

Don’t forget wetwipes, those soft sweet moist temptresses.

3 packs for a week will cover most eventualities and special occasions.

I went tramping to try it for just a few months with the encouragement of Mrs B ten years ago, on the condition that if it didn’t suit either of us I was to go back on days. Ten years later we’re not sure and still tramping.
As regards where to park, I’m with SteveBarnsley and Robroy. I will try to park on an industrial estate or town centre car park mainly because I’m tight and like to get out for a pint. On the very rare occasions that I’ve done an MSA, it’s been a never again moment but I will stop at truckstop/cafés providing I can get a meal in with the price on the ticket and a shower.

I came home today and found my Mrs bought me these for my layby nights when I can’t get to a shower, honestly, she got a job lot on Amazon :open_mouth:
