Tramping jobs where you have to cab hop

Reading the thread further down on Maritime and also knowing that Reed Boardall expect you to cab hop when you are tramping made me think that in this day and age why are there company’s out there that expect their trampers to jump from cab to cab every week or a few days?
I think it’s an absolute joke and a farce and why would someone want to take a tramping job where you’re having to empty one cab on a Friday, chuck all your stuff in another early Monday morning then empty your stuff back out the following Friday or even earlier? Surely if you was allocated a truck say from new and was told “that’s your unit for the next 4-5 year” then you would take more pride in it and make more of an effort to keep it clean you would make it a home from home and be able to install you’re TV instead of having stained, mucky bedding that could have been slept on by anybody, a cab that needs valeting every week and probably, ■■■■ bottles and stale grub left behind the drivers seat :unamused:
As far as I’m concerned “cab hopping” should only be something a day driver or night trunker should be expected to do, not someone who’s out all week.

Presumably because they don’t want expensive wagons parked up - yet still costing them through lease charges - when the driver’s on holiday or on his weekly rest. Working your assets hard is the name of the game for plenty in the industry. Obviously that isn’t going to go down too well with drivers, understandably, but seeing it from the other side’s perspective isn’t difficult either.

is it such a big deal?

quick 5 min brush out and wet wipe then a weeks worth of clothes, food and a few toys to put in.

I thought it would only ■■■■ the lads off that dress their cabs up like the ritz with televisions, consoles and god knows what else.

The trouble is the state some of these cabs are left in means its going to take alot more than a 5 minute brush out and some wet wipes to get the motor liveable for most decent peoples standards. If i did just days or nights, with no nights out then i wouldn’t be to fussed as long as i could see out of the windows and mirrors. But if i’m doing nights out and a firm gave me a truck with a really dirty interior i’d want it valeted or i’d walk.

Exactly.Maybe the poster has just started on the firm and is given all the ■■■■, if i was a tramper ( a tramp  ) i would ask the company do i keep the vehicle i am given ) and depending on the answer is whether i stay, now it could be that they advertised for a tramper and wanted to cover the holiday period in which case they should have told the op, for if a company advertises for a tramper then i would assume that they have a spare vehicle that i could call my own ! theres no way i would be cab hopping for that would do my head in.

It just makes life easy for the office staff no juggling units for drivers and runs, then they moan when the fleet is a load of unkept sheds,i cant imagine sleeping on the same bed as some drivers out there, its bad enough sitting on the same seat and holding the steering when theyve been ■■■■■■■ ,sweating ,picking their nose and coughing, uuuuuuuurgh

What’s up with having a TV and console set up in the cab if you are away all week or even longer? Wouldn’t say that makes a truck look like the ritz. Something to keep you occupied and relax to watching some soaps, box set DVDs or watching the footy maybe even have an hours bash on the PS4.

No mate I’ve been at the company I’m at now 7 and half year and had 3 trucks, one that had been around the block when I started and 2 new ones. I just don’t get the cab hopping ■■■■■■■■ for tramping jobs.

Obviously Olog Hai and Maga are not drivers, but as so many on this board work in the offices, they might have been drivers in the past by not any more , otherwise they wouldn’t be posting such nonsense comments.
You can both, come any day to clean my cab, after the other one used it and I would challenge to have it done in 5 minutes, prepare yourself for 50 mins, and that’s if you are quick and like working hard to fit in that 50 mins.
This post was surely not directed at office management, but at other drivers, so why don’t you both simply jog off.
Nothing ■■■■■■ me off more than management posting here, pretending to be drivers.

I hate that cab hopping ■■■■ I had to do it for a few weeks and I don’t know how many times I got into a lorry to find not only a mess but no diesel or bulbs not working to name but a few ,Things you have to get sorted before you can even start.
Thankfully now I drive the one lorry all the time and no one else goes near it and it’s the best way because it’s looked after and I can keep my stuff in it and not have to worry about some other tool wrecking it on me.

Steve you are right bro why should you have to cab hop because the company are trying to save money, if i was in your shoes i would tell them straight that i am not gonna cab hop, tyake me off tramping and put me on day work, or i am gonna look for another job, bloody hell you have been there long enough to be treated with respect, so tell them that.

Im a driver but had a few years in the office, when some blokes are given a lorry they think its for their use only and moan if antbody else drives it,how most office bods see it is [its just a lorry]and its to earn money ,nothing else, unless the firm is smallish and give the drivers a lorry as if it was their own,2 sides to the argument if you work for a big firm its something you have got to deal with im afraid

Exactly how are the company saving money or fully utilising their assets here? A tramper parks up somewhere on a night out, another driver comes and takes his three axle unit and replaces it with another three axle unit! Apart from it probably being illegal as the tramper has undoubtedly booked off all it has achieved is to ■■■■ the tramper off.

I’ve been told that Reed Bordall do this a lot, maybe Jonny Truckfest could shed some light on to the whys and wherefores.

well i had a good run, 4 years and I’ve finally been outed as office management. I’ll get me coat.

Yes seth, then you should know better as you have seen both sides of the coin, i too look at that, but if a company want a driver as a tramper, then give him his own truck, hes a lot happier, will work a lot better, and will also look at it as a tool to earn the company money and himself, you as an office bod, i wouldnt work for you if you paid me 100 grand a week, you have an anti driver attitude and know F/A as a transport operator or how to treat drivers.

OK, and I’ll be concerned about your (incorrect) assumption because…?

good for you topmix, thats the way to go and then one day the companies may realise that we dont put up with ■■■■ from them, i would do the same. I can understand a company utilising their vehicles while a driver is resting, but to constantly keep moving drivers from their vehicles week in week out when they are employed as trampers is beyond me. I have lost many a good job because i wont put up with crap, and did recently when i complained about a smelly truck, but the company didnt understand what i was on about, office bods you see, and i certainly wouldnt put up with taking my stuff in and out every 5 minutes either, although i am semi retired, i still wont put up with ■■■■.
