Training in Essex

Hiyaa, I’m just after abit of advise really. I’ve already taken my theory HP & cpc case studies, so now it’s on to finding a training company. I live in Essex. I’ve been looking through a few posts and see that road train and ace are recommened. I was wondering if anyone has had any experiance with Ace or Road Train?
Thankyou

I trained with ace, very good company and the training is spot on. There lorries do look abit rough but dont let that put you off. The rigid you’ll learn was a volvo fh12 series 1 solo unit which they extended and put a box on the back of, the result is your very high up, its way overpowered (380hp) which means if you ■■■■ a gear up it doesn’t matter as it still keep pulling and they made it pretty short so its really maneuverable.

Roadtrain are also ment to be very good.

Ace do there tests in enfield, its a good area as theres no real tight turns or nasty places, just a fair amount of traffic at times.

He got me through my C+E on the 1st attempt.
Good luck :sunglasses:

Thankyou for your replys. Saaamon did you have a choice out of Enfield or Chelmsford with Ace?

Just to add my bit.

I’d recommend training in a realistic size vehicle, 12 tonners are all well and good nice and small for the test but not gret preparation for the real world. I’d driven 7.5t vehicles so was familiar with that size vehicle (which is not far different to a 12t) but did my test in an 11m long series 3 Scania which seemed huge at the time.

However when I started doing agency work my first shift was a similar sized Scania 18t and my second on a Scania 26t. Having had experience of a large vehicle definately helped.

I’d also search this forum with the names of any prospective training provider and you should find some useful info.

I passed my class 2 in Chelmsford and I’d say it would be a better area than Enfield for a test. Less traffic for starters (I did class 1 in Ipswich which was really quiet, seemed a bit less stressful)

The test result percentages used to be published, I think Purfleet was the lowest rate followed by Enfield in this area with the rate for Chelmsford a good 10% or so higher.

No, they use to use chelmsford but now stick to enfield. I did my cpc in chelmsford and we spoke about it on the way and val (instructor) said there’s a few ■■■■■■■■ turns (for a learner). Why do you ask? Roadtrain use enfield aswell, but i think they have another school near lakeside that use Purfleet, but someone may be able correct me on that.

In enfield you’ll drive a fair bit round the town as learner lorries are exempt from weight limits, but dont panic its not tight, then you’ll head out around epping, walthem abbey, loughton etc. Its great fun, there a good punch, john the governor will do your assesment, he’ll crack you up, he’s 70 odd and still teachs!

I spose you had experience of a couple of different areas, they did say at the time, if you can drive in enfield you’ll be able to drive anywhere. I thought enfield was alright but thats all i knew.

11m long rigid as a learner lorry :astonished:. I drive a 6 wheeler stralis which is “only” 10.3m. Not surprised it felt massive lol.

Have you been to visit the providers yet  as that could be your next step so you can see for self

Ace told me the test takes place in Chelmsford, I just wondered if you had the choice. Ive heard befre that enfield is good place to learn. Road Train do have a school near lakeside that do use perfleet. I have been to see both training providers and like both but just wanted to see if anyone had had any experience with them before I made my mind up.
I know Chelmsford well and dont know perfleet at all which is why im not sure about going with roadtrain.

Ok so if you go to an area you dont know well then you will not be complacent as you will be watching the road & signs more but this could also be of advantage as when you do pass & are sent to an unfamiliar place it wont bother you

But doing it in an area you know also has the advantage of you do know the roads so may be a bit complacent

This is what your instructor is for

Pleased that you have been to see both of them

Thats what it says on the plating ticket, i assume its right. Its plenty long enough for my limited skills lool. I normally get iveco to fellow me in a van so the badge never strays far.

Thank you Ian AKA Rubberducky !

My best advice for LGV training in Essex is K.W & Daughters in Latchindon, Essex

Ask to be trained by BOB, the very best trainer.

If not perhaps RSM and there I would ask for Dave Scriven.

After that maybe 3rd choice Flair Training.

Regards

John

I used ACE and the test was in Enfield so spent many days going up the crocked mile. Class 1 test was done at 1500, school kicking out time. Examiner actually said ‘If you make your way through this lot you’ll do for me’!!!

Good bunch there.

Anyone else find this slightly amusing?

Toast,

Out of interest what are you looking to do, class 2 and stay with it or use it as a stepping stone to getting a class 1 licence. Have you any idea what sort of work you would like to do? You may get some worthy pointers about employers who take on new drivers.

(Although I realise that might seem a way off yet!)
