I’ve been quoted 3k to do C+E+CPC. Not the cheapest and defo not the most expensive, but they’re a well thought of credible training company, so that’ll do me…Now it’s just a matter of finding 3k
Get an interest free fixed term credit card, nobody is going to give it too you for free, OH unless you can get a good job coach at the universal credit to help you out etc…
So the unemployed get accepted for £3k interest free credit cards now? I don’t think so! [emoji23]

In its shambolic way to solve the Driver shortage with numb nut Shapps in charge of transport, with what tests are available, I’m surprised government hasn’t made the HGV driving test the same as the CPC farce as in just turn up and walk away fully qualified.
Did you hear Shapps on the Today programme on Friday? At last a government minister who has acknowledged the downward pressure put on wages caused by over supply also acknowledging that conditions and pay need to improve, if he is going to go anyway to solving the problem is yet to be seen but acknowledging the problems and not just bowing to the RHA is not a bad start.

Yep the same numb nuts that allowed a few extra driving hours thinking that would sort the Driver shortage issue, the same numb nuts that has waited and waited and waited until yesterday to give the thumbs up for 5000 foreign Drivers to sort the Driver shortage out, as if that’s going to make much difference. We shall have to wait and see if after all the news headlines die down if wages remain higher and better T&C’s begin. By increasing Driving hours as he did to me proves he himself hasn’t a clue as to what is wrong with the job.

As a Tory it’s a fair bet that he actually means over supply in the road transport industry not over supply of the labour market.Like Labour they don’t want to see a thriving road transport industry they want to see it as nothing more than a bare essentials distribution service.
While their whole ideology is based on minimising wages to maximise profits using a rigged labour market to do it and taxing those with the least ability to pay. With a crashed economy to match.

Yourself. Thats the fatal flaw in his “plan”
I’m struggling to decide whether you’re being deliberately obtuse or whether you are actually as stupid as you are coming across!
It’s not been said that people on benefits should either save up to pay for their licences or either that the taxpayers should fund it by anyone except you. I’d type the next bit in capitals in the hope that you’d grasp it but I fear that it would be in vain so pay close attention; if a person on benefits yearns to be a lorry driver they should get A N other job in order that they fund their training. You know, the way that other people do who wish to train as an airline pilot or deep sea diver or any myriad of careers. It’s not a difficult concept really, it only seems to be you struggling with it for some reason.
It’s a moronic thing to talk about isn’t it - unemployed and paying 3 grand to get a license. Not happening mate. Forget it and move on.

The extension to hours was stupid but then any driver who used it is also stupid but as I said at least he acknowledges the the true reasons why driving is unappealing as opposed to the RHA who still have wages and conditions way down their list as to why there is a shortage. Finally the public and people in power are getting to see how big business treats drivers and realising that the present situation is unsustainable, whether the transport secetary is a numb nuts or not at least he has finally acknowledged the problems unlike any of his predecessors

Try plugging your thought process in & read what Moaster said. The suggestion was take any of the multiple jobs now available (become employed) put some of the earnings aside to buy the training & get the licence. I think there is a flaw in the argument but it doesn’t merit the response you gave nor does it get any closer to a solution to the problem which is, as I see it, why is driving lorries so unattractive to so many holders of the licence.

On the radio today they where saying, only certain companies would be able to get/use foreign drivers.
Did i hear right on the radio today, that one option to solve " the driver crisis" would be to train up some of the Afghan refugees
God help us if true

I see numerous TV programmes in which couples who already both work full-time and live frugally struggle even to pay the bills, let alone save money. If the industry needs trained workers then the industry should train them. If I worked in a concrete lintel factory and they wanted me to operate some type of batching machine they wouldn’t expect me to go off and learn how to use one at my own expense.

Indeed & one of the flaws I alluded to. However given the past performance of the industry for training my breath I’ll not be holding.
Suggestions by one mp that we should train up thousands of afghan refugees.
So the idea is to train up thousands of Afghans who presumably, would have to take a UK based normal driving test, then, assuming they pass, then go into exactly the same training process as the rest of us ordinary pond life types. I assume they will also be funded?
Will they be fast tracked through the system which includes the DVSA of course.
What about extending the same courtesies to those of us that are Brits, here already and keen to get on with joining the profession?
The government could fund the training of 10,000 new HGV drivers for 30,000,000 which, given the truly vast eye watering amount of wonga spent in other areas, is a drop in the ocean.

The UK has taken in
“The Government says the Afghan Citizens’ Resettlement Scheme will aim to allow 5,000 Afghans to settle in the UK”
So…5,000…men, women and children are coming to settle here?
Im all for equality of employment, but wont those 5 year old Afghani kids just be driving down my pay rate?

Exactly and many of there could be the unemployed who will never have the money to afford training thmselves.

Companies are still banging on about “two years experience”
Conor:
Are they? The job adverts I’m seeing aren’t asking for it anymore.
I don’t spend a lot of time looking at driver adverts, but on the odd occasion I have looked recently, yes, they were still stipulating this.
A close friend of mine has been looking for driving jobs though (and no, I’m not “asking for a friend” ) he’s a highly experienced class 2 driver, some experience of Class 1, ADR qualified, lots of experience as an HGV instructor, and a qualified TM to boot. He couldn’t get a sniff of the Class 1 jobs he was after because of the 2YE issue. Consequently he’s re-taken an unsatisfactory job at a place he previously worked at because the jobs market isn’t quite as has been described in the press.
If anyone knows of a firm around the Tyneside area that needs very professional guy, PM me what you’ve got and I’ll pass it on to him.
