3 million on the dole and they can’t find 100000 of them to drive a lorry ? Is that 1 in 30 ? .

Nailed it in one ^^^ Nobody has yet dared utter the idea of getting the terminally workshy off of their fat arses to actually do a days work and actually contribute to the society that they are so happy to leech off…

I have never been out of work so could i ask who pays for the training?

.

They wont come back while they have to pay full PAYE tax. Their own countries are paying better rates now as the shortages are actually world wide! The job has been run into the floor by greedy accountants & lying greedy haulage firm ■■■■■! We can’t afford to pay more liars etc etc …

The poor treatment of drivers is known by everyone because of social media, mostly bad reviews and awful terms pay and long hours put brits off, remoaners trying to blame brexit for this nonsense is absolutely pathetic …

They never left because of brexit ,it was because they can’t get away with paying hardly any tax anymore using LTD status ,lots of ltd EU Drivers got sizable furlough grants and legged it…They won’t be back any time soon.

Crazy, how many unemployed people have £1500 they can gamble on passing a test.

The government want new drivers but wont pay for them to get a licence ■■■■■■■ typical.

I’ve been quoted 3k to do C+E+CPC. Not the cheapest and defo not the most expensive, but they’re a well thought of credible training company, so that’ll do me…Now it’s just a matter of finding 3k :open_mouth:

Takes quite a while to save up £1500 when you are only getting £74 a week. About 3 trillion years to be exact…

Get an interest free fixed term credit card, nobody is going to give it too you for free, OH unless you can get a good job coach at the universal credit to help you out etc…

Is that 3 grand for a pass first time? What if it takes 3 goes to pass? That’s another grand. What if you run out of money after your 3rd fail? That’s 4 grand down the toilet and nowhere furthur forward.

MR Negative give it a break lad

All this talk of unemployed learning to drive… Mostly pointless

Training schools have a backlog of customers who already have the required money to pay for their tuition, the problem is test availability. I’m sure the guys from PSTT would back me up on this.

Even if there were funded C+E tuition for the unemployed who wanted it, there’s still the “two years experience” issue

It’s just what they say to attack the unemployed - everyone knows it’s horse dung.

I want attacking the unemployed i was surprised to hear there is no way they can train to be a wagon driver unless they pay for it themselves.

Zac_A:
So if we really are this desperate for drivers, surely every newly qualified HGV driver is currently gainfully employed?

Yeah right…

Companies are still banging on about “two years experience”

Are they? The job adverts I’m seeing aren’t asking for it anymore. Where I’m at started their driver apprenticeship scheme again for warehouse staff so put through tests, instant job on slightly reduced pay for the first few months and they’re on £47k here. When they advertised for 15 drivers there was no 2 year requirement and the last time they took a load of drivers on one of them was so fresh out of driving school I had to show him how to couple up an artic because he’d only driven wagon and drag in lessons. This is a FTSE250 company with almost £2Bn turnover.

I’m struggling to decide whether you’re being deliberately obtuse or whether you are actually as stupid as you are coming across!

It’s not been said that people on benefits should either save up to pay for their licences or either that the taxpayers should fund it by anyone except you. I’d type the next bit in capitals in the hope that you’d grasp it but I fear that it would be in vain so pay close attention; if a person on benefits yearns to be a lorry driver they should get A N other job in order that they fund their training. You know, the way that other people do who wish to train as an airline pilot or deep sea diver or any myriad of careers. It’s not a difficult concept really, it only seems to be you struggling with it for some reason.

^ The proof that there is no ‘shortage’.
Just like not waiving the DCPC for retired drivers.
Also possibly even allowing them to use log books under domestic regs instead of bothering with a tacho card and learning to use a digi tacho.
While they seem happy enough to accept an uncheckable, possibly false, foreign work history to meet the ‘experience’ requirement.

The flaw in that plan is that in many cases they can actually hack the A N other job leaving them with the question why risk and bother with all the responsibility of driving a truck. The only reason why I didn’t stay in better paid factory work was because I couldn’t hack the crushing inside environment I wanted to drive trucks far and wide.
The Brit road transport industry fell way short of satisfying that motivation.
So effectively CNC operator at 40 +k pa basic for less than 40 hours why would they want to leave that to drive a Hiab wagon around the local streets or at best what laughably passes for ‘trunking’ in our fast degenerating ‘road transport’ industry.
Especially if the factory job can be tempered by a 3 on 4 off or even 3 day week shift pattern

There’s a lot of moaning, all with valid reasons, but for heaven’s sake try another job if you think driving is terrible. When I came back to the UK and was waiting to do my CPC, medical etc I picked rocks and misshapen vegetables of a conveyor belt, worse pay and horrible conditions.

I will be leaving the industry then. I suspect I won’t be the only one. Only been holding on because of brexit and the end of FoM.

In its shambolic way to solve the Driver shortage with numb nut Shapps in charge of transport, with what tests are available, I’m surprised government hasn’t made the HGV driving test the same as the CPC farce as in just turn up and walk away fully qualified.
