Is it agency or are you working for calor itself? In the shop I used to work at we used to get calor deliveries, don’t think there were many drops but it is a lot of lifting. Most worked for manpower, but from talking to the guys driving they try to keep the same drivers going all the time if they are good. It always seemed to be the same drivers delivering anyway, thnk there was only ever one proper calor driver come in.
Besides that I know no more.
.
Calor Gas used to be a Manpower contract. Not sure if it still is, in my short time as a Manpower consultant i placed a few drivers in at Calor. It is heavy lifting, there are no two ways about it. The money is good and the conditions are good also. What i always attempted to do was keep the driver on Calor work during the winter (busy period) and HIAB work with SG Group in the summer (busy period) didn’t always work out like that though.
Calor do take the lads on directly also.
Think they have a tail lift and trolleys. might be wrong though… anyhow they’re full of gas so will be light
keith:
surely they dont expect you to physicaly lift the large gas cylinders when they are full?
H&S Exec wouldn’t expect that . You can bet there will be a tail lift or small jib crane ( not HIAB)
keith:
ive recently seen a job advertised delivering calor gas bottles 5 - 20 drops per day in a class 2 truck, if anyone has any info in what calor are like to work for, what the jobs like etc i’d be most grateful !
I presume you’ve got your ADR
.
If it is through Manpower then they give ‘suitable candidates’ a two day ‘gas bottle ADR’ training, which also counts towards your CPC.
A mate of mine went for a job with BOC when he was 17, it is now Linde and apart from him having to collect the lorry from another depot, he is still there, 23 years later, although he does medical and pub gas as well as oxygen, acetylene and argon for welding
His lorry has a little air operated winch but mainly you roll the cylinders by the neck.
I wouldnt do it for all the kings horses and all the kings men.
■■■■■■■ heavy gas bottles ----- an easy way to damage ya back
I once lifted a gas bottle off a flt truck , before you ask — it wasnt a small bottle
I ended up straining me back really badly
it still plays me up today 3 years later
at the time i was off work for 6 months +
as i physically couldnt move or bend, as i was in soo much agony
I had terrible shooting pains down my left leg … constant throbbing pain in my thigh and stiffness in my knee joint, aswell as twinges in my back
i ended up on pain killers for a very long long time
my quality of life has suffered as a result
for a quid an hour extra , mate … if you have suffered with back problems in the past ,I would stay well clear from this line of work
gas bottle work or pub drayman work i will never do , i rather be unemployed but have my health .

I hope you don’t complain when a Polish or other EU driver takes it then. Just about sums it up really

Its through an agency, its advertised with about 4 different ones, it says temp to perm after 12 weeks, but agencies do tend to lie about jobs, Im tempted to apply but the heavy lifting bit worried me as i damaged my back about 5 years ago laying slabs and dont want to make it worse. surely they dont expect you to physicaly lift the large gas cylinders when they are full?
The biggest ones you will lift are the 19kg ones, that’s 19kg of gas plus the bottle weight. The big bottles are usually at the back and they are on a tail lift and you have a trolley, but there is still some shuffling about to do with these to get a full one off and an empty back on.
Depending where you deliver you may be expected to do most of the lifting into the gas cages or where they need to be.
It is hard work, you won’t need the gym after all of it!
Long time ago (before the days of ADR) I used to do a bit for a company called Foster & Co. in Nottingham, agents for Air Products and sold anything to do with welding; ■■■■ good little firm and I wish it’d been permanent not just agency holiday relief.
As said above you either use a trolley or twirl the big 'uns by the neck. I can shift one like that, useful even today since I use those 47kg bottles at home but respect to the experienced guys who can move two oxy bottles at a time, twirling them in opposite directions. Now THAT’S skill!
Keith, like any manual job 90% of it is technique; same with the brewers drays. You’ll only hurt yourself by doing it wrong.

The Poles will have been trained and taught how to lift heavy weights, they were used to carrying Peter Kay for years.

Why bother?
Just trunk trailers up and down the motorways and let someone else do all the manual work/unloading…just ain’t worth the effort when you don’t have to - especially if you suffer with back problems…
I get paid to drive trucks, not to load and unload 'em…■■■■ that!
If I wanted to load and unload and lift heavy weights, I’d get a job in a warehouse…
