Are 4 wheeler tippers still an economic proposition in to-days tough operating conditions Nathan? ------20ton,2 drivers, combined MPG less than an 8wheeler and a 6wheeler,I would think they must be? I know I’m probably talking (zb) but I can’t see how one of them shiny new 4 wheelers can be cost effective, but probably the “quarrie” brains trust will come on the thread and tell me that its all a “myth” and tipper men are just crying “Wolf” and things arn’t really so bad!!! Well there are still new 8 wheelers going onto the road so something is’nt adding up!!! Confused old (zb).

Smiths usually have a waiting list for deliveries on the 4wheelers Dennis; they’re kept busy on narrow access jobs such as in Oxford city and the Cotswolds. We’ve even got a 12 ton mgw Daf built on a 7.5ton chassis that carries just over 7ton (half a 6w load) for really tight jobs. You don’t see many od 4wheelers around here now. I think Smiths put a “part load charge” on the 4s to make them profitable. Regarding the 4w mpg, when I drove the immaculate one featured in the BigLorryBlog I think it was doing about 9-9.5mpg, the same as my 6wheeler.

Thanks for that Nathan,I should have realised that there was more to it than “sentiment”!! But still, when you consider that the MPG is no more than a 6wh and wages will be similar there will have to be a hefty “surcharge” on the load to make it a viable proposition.Cheers Dennis.

They are a dying breed in ‘normal’ quarry work these days. We currently have only 3 left in our quarry, they pay them what they carry on dry stone with 14tonne paid on tar. They get as much as 12-13MPG but when compared with an 8x4 its a no brainer - the biggun wins!
If I was going to add a truck to my fleet (of one
) then it would have to be an 8-legger because 6’s and 4’s just don’t pay unless you’re driving them yourself.

There are only two four wheelers left in the quarries down this way, they are capped to 14 ton payload whatever they carry, they also do quite a bit of shute work, where they get quite a bit of daywork and waiting time.
Cheers Dave.
What about those tippers with mid lift axles, are they 4 or 6wheelers? There are a few on coated but I’ve only ever seen 1 non insulated tipper like this, B&E Skips had one plus a normal 6 that did work for us (still have the 6 the midlift was sold). One driver I know left Smiths to drive a midlift for a small haulier in Abingdon running in Hanson colours. Driver said it could only gross 23000kgs but carried 15t. Downside was it was underpowered as it was a Volvo FL6, but profitable as the tax was lower and he got barrowing time…

There were one or two around here but I believe both have been sold/retired. I think they struggle for traction on sites and the “brains trust” in the quarry head offices struggle to work out whether its a 4 or a 6…

A haulier had a Volvo FM7 with a mid lift axle running at 23000kgs,it was jokingly referred to as a five wheeler this way.
The last working 4000 series on the fleet, withdrawn on 31st March and up for sale

What’s happened to the Driver
The driver of V772 has got one of the new Daf Autos. He had the V reg from new and drove it up until early March. It was a spare while the W reg was disposed of. The S reg artic has gone up to Northumberland where the owner’s apparently going to restore it, and the scrap W reg unit went with it, while the one that failed to go on E-Bay has been sold to someone in Derbyshire.

DONKEYNESS ALERT!
Here’s the guilty culprit, seen below trying to get the V reg 6 wheelers’ passenger window up after the driver was told by him “Don’t use it, it doesn’t work!”

I took this one and left it as a screensaver on Pete James’ work phone (the driver who keeps the 4w Volvo immaculate)
I got a rather un-christian phonecall from him when he switched his phone on a few days later

He’s probably the “company grass” Dave!! every firm has one-----now lets see who was it at Bewick Transport? If we see Nathan walking about like John Wayne we’ll know where one of the Smith lads stuck the camera!!! cheers Dennis.

Would that be a self pic of yon self or the other chap
The “Company Grass” was an unofficial company newsletter called “Donkey News” written by a driver who lightheartedly reported on damage to vehicles/property etc. Dependant on how much damage, you got “Donkey Points” which were added up and at the end of the year someone got awarded “Golden Donkey” a plastic toy donkey some wag painted gold and glued on a bit of wood. Certain people didn’t see the funny side, and the “News” was ended about 18months ago.
