Hi

Hi Gaz, I’ve never seen a pic of the old S39 8wheeler. I take it that was taken at Ardley quarry as they used to have one there as a dumper along with a Bison and a Fleetmaster-which I think replaced the S39 when it gave up. The cab was left on display beside the haul road for years I think someone bought it for parts. I think Lionel Golder had that brand new.
The ERF EC must’ve been new when that pic was taken, Trevor Ayres had that from new and I was the first person to load it when it arrived. There was a “discussion” over the 2-way radio when it came to Gill Mill regarding it’s payload; the yard wanted to know what it could carry as they were told it would be more than the Foden 4000s…
W/Bridge= “Trevors’ new lorry carries 19 and a half tonnes.”
Yard= “Oh no, it carries 20.”
W/Bridge= “No, it tares 12400 so 19.6.”
Yard= “We were told it’d carry 20.”
W/Bridge= “Well get off your arse and come over here and have a look!”
(End of transmission) :laughing: :laughing:

That’ll be Tracy. Her Daf’s probably in for a service.You can spot her truck, it’s got “Trace” written on the sunvisor and on the cabside.

I haven’t personally and I’ve never seen our lorries do it. It’s normally look for bit of coloured plastic tied to a gatepost, back in and tip and wedge ticket into the lime with the time it was tipped written on. Isn’t ramp work for loading spreaders and bags?

Loading straigt into the spreaders Nathan,used to do it when I drove for C W Griffiths years ago,he doesn’t spread lime anymore,but the two yellow Leylands posted by Steve Fryske still do for his nephew.Ivor Duggan & Sons do a lot of ramping,they are by far the biggest lime spreading outfit in Mid Wales and Herefordshire.
Cheers Dave.

Could this be the s39 8wheeler in better days :question:

And the man touching the wheel in the above pic i believe is the mystery man who used to park on the oxford road

Great pic Neil, how’d you come by that? I was trying to figure out if that’s Smiths workshop as it looks so different without all the tools and stuff! It could be the driver you said as a couple of drivers think that lorry was the one that went to Ardley late 70s/early 80s as a dumper and Lionel Golder wouldn’tve been old enough to have had it from new.
Come to think of it, is it an S39 on a J reg or could it be an S36? They look similar and I thought the S39 came out later when Foden had money troubles and recycled old designs…

It is an S39 Nathan-I’vehad the Foden books out-the S39 came out around 1970 and S36 had a one piece screen.

Thanks for that, I was worried I’d be using this smiley :blush: I’ve seen a T reg S39 (McGoverns have one) and was surprised they were made that late…
I remember the lorry that replaced the S39 at Ardley, it was a sister of this one

one of which got passed by an old man on a shopper bike on Fullbrook Hill :laughing:

Wayne Dixon driving the spare 8wheeler loading at Dewars’ Farm Pit (the “new” Ardley Quarry)

I was telling Alan Johnson (Foreman at Duns Tew) about the pictures posted of this;

and he said the reason it’s cab remained for so long was because it became a nesting box for Wagtails! I remember it sitting isolated while a working face was dug around it but didn’t know it was being used as a birdbox-recycling at it’s best :smiley:

I see your tipper driver has got the body raised Nathan for the weighloader I presume,do your loading shovels have weighloaders ?

Yes mate all our shovels do, but some shovel drivers like you to stop them as they don’t have to hunt for the right amount; instead just pick up a bucketfull and pour the material gently in until you stop them. The weighbridge at Bekstone is awkward to drive off and turn around if you have to tip some off-it’s also quite a way to the face again. Some of us have the pm system with sirens on where you can set a target weight for it to go off. The Foden in the picture does and I think Jim has his set at about 19t (carries 19.8 so he’s got some leeway if too much falls off the bucket)

Just seen a nice shiney new Lorry on the news, along with Mr Needle.

That goes to work proper tomorrow, chap off the V reg’s having it. As on the news, the weigher’s integral with the reversing camera. It doesn’t carry much though, about 15.2 max. The problem with tv report was it said we’ve all got those blindside cameras; bull it’s just the 2 new ones so I’ll be having cyclists undertake thinking they’re on camera… :unamused:
