roadcommander2:
Is the Scania unit on the road yet?
Not yet but I think it’ll be next week. One of our drivers saw the new MAN 6w at the dealers’ on Monday too. That’ll be distinctive as it’s got the large cab fitted to the 8wheelers. I bet that’ll be a heavy old girl.
Looking forward to seeing "dads " Scania Nathan ! , Saw the day cabbed artic with curtains yesterday ! was it Andrew ? is he on channel ? also saw a y reg foden with a grab on looks like some one else owns it , it was a bit scruffy !

Yes Steve, Andrew’s on channel. Tuesday is the big unveiling of the Scania according to driver talk. I’d like the 56 reg Foden 6w, definitly one for the enthusiasts.
Muckaway:
The new MAN 6wheeler came into Gill Mill today to be weighed; Tared in at 11160kgs.
Payload of about 14800
That seems about logical when the new 8 wheelers are lucky to hit 18.5, Gone are the days of 16 tonne payload at 26 gross!
To put it in perspective though, our 8 legged DAF tare’s at only about 200kg over that!
I gather Smiths policy is a jack of all trades truck, Dew, hence the high tare. They could have nice light alloy aggregate wagons but the payload increase is lost when the lorry can’t “just backload some demolition waste”.
They’re right in one way, 20t to Oxford and back empty or 19t to Oxford and 19t of rubble back=38t shifted in the same trip.
I’ve never seen a Smiths lorry with pea shingle leaking out of a holy tailgate…
You might already be aware of this but there`s an ex Smiths motor in the pullout part of Heritage Commercials this month apparently the blokes going to restore it ,i think its an ERF

Is it a really old one as apart from the EC11, I don’t think Smiths had run ERFs since the '50s.
Just read the article about jeff sprostons vehicles, the lorry he is restoring is a 6 wheel contractor reg no F38 FFC its still in daily use.The constructor was used in a publicity picture when new.Scanner not working so i cant put it on.

I remember it Paul, it had been sold by the time I started on Smiths. It was used for publicity photos, they still hang in Gill Mill quarrys’ weighbridge.
Funny thing is it wasn’t a popular vehicle, a couple of drivers who are still there hated it. It was sold to M and M Skips who moved waste from their recycling station at Cassington to Ardley landfill.
If someone has the article can they scan it on here please?

I emailed it to you this afternoon, did you not get it?
I like the quote it said “a driver had seen it on the internet…said it was always breaking down…”
I don’t know about that but it certainly didn’t have fans down 'ere!
I think I posted before on here how when I gave the workshop a photo of it one comment was “who’d want to show that old thing?!”
