Various part time jobs during school holidays and weekends Left school at 16 in 1971. Three years in an office job, wanted to get into engineering but no apprenticeships at the time. Started driving non HGV for local council at 19 in 1974, took class 1 at my own expense (approx £125 !!!), moved on to a builders merchants after about 3yrs. At 24 in 1979 started driving for Marley Tiles, originally directly employed then transport was outsourced in 2009, firstly to Gregory Distribution and then in 2013 to Wincanton. Retired a year early in 2019 as Wincanton decided that they had too many vehicles on the contract, and the fact I’d been doing it for 40+ years didn’t mean anything and they wanted me to go onto general haulage, but kept some on roof tiles who had only been there a few months!
Made window frames when I left school then in order.
Teign valley glass
Dartington crystal
Lynx parcels
Coca Cola
Gregory distribution
Vallance haulage
Gregory distribution again.
Is this jobs within a company (counting different positions for the company) or companies worked for? If it’s jobs within its:
Freezer worker (16)
Ambient picker (16)
Goods in (16/17)
Multi drop driver (7.5t till 21)
Multi drop driver (18t till 40)
Trunker (class 1, 40 till present)
If it’s with a company, then 1! 39 years a few months back
I’ve ticked “more than 20”, but some of those might have lasted only a month, maybe two. I started in the world of work in the 1970’s, having been sold the line “get a trade so you’ll always have something to fall back on”
Then the recession of the 1980’s hit home. The day we finished our apprenticeships we got a pat on the back and were shown the door “Well done lads, but there’s no jobs for you” . For the next few years, getting a few months of steady work seemed like a dream sometimes.
me too, and im not counting the cash in hand jobs to subsidise the dole . did some wierd and wonderful (and some times downright dangerous ) things to try and make ends meet .

Left school in 1971. Worked with a builder for a year. Got a job on plant, diggers, dumptruck etc, was at that for about five years with three different outfits. Work dried up, took a job as rear gunner on a bin lorry, got my class 3 through them in 1977, bought an old Commer tipper in 1978, started on my own, been doing that ever since.Be 45 years in April.
Looks like I’ve had a pretty boring life compared to some on here.

A driver where I work is a tramper and this year marks his 50th anniversary with the company. Well, that’s not strictly true, it’s his 50th year at the depot but it has been Salvesons, Norberts, XPO and now GXO sin his time there.
Five jobs in fifty years, eight with Hewens/Morris Garages, one with A.C Barnes, twenty two with Tilcon/STB Transport, five with Gough Transport Limited and then thirteen as a paid carer for family.

I’ve seen my company change its name to many times! Started when it was UYC (United Yeast Company, which was part of Distillers Group,Food Group services, which then got bought out by Guinness)…food side of it then went to Fitch & Son when they bought it, Booker Fitch, Booker Food Services, 3663, Bidvest & now Bidfood….might have missed 1 or 2 in the early years

How about how many jobs you’ve been sacked from?
I’ve always left before it got to that , last one was group boss comming up for disaplinary ( told I wouldn’t be sacked ) but jacked anyway
Went back 10+ years later on agency. & chap recognised me , but said ex boss was a ■■■■■■■ , was offered a job at end of 1 st shift , didn’t take it due to wages
You get that feeling , I think it’s best to get out before it gets to the sack
