Tipper Tom:
It’s only a bargain if it work fella .
Their called Dial A Fitter for a good reason
You won’t beat a Thompson body though.
Sounds like you’ve done well there with the body and the crane.
Are you looking at grab work for a water company? Old pace had 4 on that and it pays well. There’s a fair bit of hoop jumping but once you’re on and the operator is squared away with tickets and the like it’s good.
They do spec the motor with a wacker and ball hitch as far as I know (all of ours had it) but that’s not insurmountable.
Not seen a Dennis that wasn’t a fire engine or a bin lorry for years.
Good luck with the new venture.
Yep I’m now praying it will work
Yep grab work water company & private
I’m in with the water company already, currently I just get call outs & 1 regular pumping job, I was on call all over Christmas for 3 weeks, I do what they ask every time so trying to build a relationship, 2 big companies have the actual contracts, but I got in through a guy who does call out with his digger, slowly, slowly.
The Dennis looks like a bin wagon,
I went to buy this Dennis poop tanker, the guy had put a jetting kit on it at about £8k, I got an absolute steal.
He had the body & crane sat there, got talking long story short he needed to sell it as he’d stopped trading and the yard he was in wanted it gone, I rang a couple of mates they had no idea what a crane was worth and all them ran agg bodies not steel, so I guessed.
With all the cycle awareness going on, I think a utility tipper with the Dennis cab (walk through, good visibility etc) will get you brownie points with the risk assessors, general safety people etc.
People mention Thompson bodies, don’t go for the “Skylift” auto tailgate system. It’s operated on cables and pulleys, basically bumps your tare weight up and if it’s like the one I drove, will jam open or snap pulley cables. I’ve always liked Charlton Superlites, steel but mid way between heavy muck and aggregate bodies.

Now it’s getting good
I haven’t got into weights as yet as I did actually assume they would be very similar as it’s a weight sensitive vehicle.
As for Scania no chance am I buying a new one of them at 100k
I am leaning towards the Daf the mpg isn’t so variable, the ground clearance is even better on the new CF, paint is no extra, manual box no extra, parts supply costs are pretty good.
The crane my god I’m glad it wasn’t a HMF then, sounds like I might of landed lucky.
Andrew s ‘10 grand cheaper’ how much do they cost new ?
Now I’m smiling, I think I may have got a bargain.
when i got this new (61 plate), my boss was moaning about the cost of the cranes going up.from memory i think it was 25 grand(but cant be sure i’m afraid)0
do you still run topcutters , i can,t remember the blokes name who used to come to us , but he had a nick name
We run loads of volvos we have no major problems all ones 57 plate on are i shift had one gearbox go but that was the animal driving it.
They stand up to tge abuse our firm give them so they must be ok.
The scania seems to be the most popular choice in the east london and essex are the last couple of years.
My dad has a ex mitchell scania 57 plate had it since 2011 and had no problems with it.

Wow, I thought someone would be able to convince me one would be so much better than the others.
I didn’t ask for prices for Merc, Renault because I just don’t like them.
Volvo I hear only breakdown stories
Currently no one has suggested the Hino’s
Scania’s are just too expensive new, almost 50% more, a daycab chassis is just over 100
Iveco no one has actually said anything negative about them (they are ugly mind)
MPG is reasonable as long as you keep on top of the electronic programming.
The new Daf there isn’t much data as it’s a new engine, previous Daf’s usually return reasonable mpg if driven steady.
When you say Scania day chassis retails at over 100k does that include the body? Well it should do for that price lol. Euro 6 Scanias have a 10k mark up on them over Euro 5 & they have a delightful Adblue system.
It seems a lot more hauliers are specifying G Series day cabs over the P Series day cabs n all.

Does anyone have experience of using Barry Napper weighloaders? I’ve got the PT200M in my wagon and I think it’s packed up. TBH I don’t rate them in comparison to PM Onboards’ systems as the two I’ve used recently aren’t that accurate (PM ones are as good as weighbridges most of the time). My display looks like this;
U------kg.
I’ve tried to zero and tare it and it just says “ERROR” on both counts. Is it broken or is there a reboot I can do to sort it?
all of Clancys are fitted with them ,we do not touch anything on them , just raise the body a bit and thats it , although loading with a grab i do not need it
I get the U----kg display as soon as I raise the body. I wonder if a loadcell has broken? One of our wagons has an instruction manual for one so I might have a look through it.
Talking of Clancys’ I used to do their inert out of Kidlington depot (the stuff they couldn’t reuse). Nice blokes in there.

Seems to me like either a wire is loose so the weight isn’t coming up on the weigher or like you said a load cell is loose. Is your boss is getting weighers fitted to the Mitchell trucks? If so surely he’ll fix yours

Not sure if he’s retro fitting, they’re about £3k aren’t they (so I heard)? I had a look at the junction box where the four loadcell wires go in and out of and the lid is broken, so water damage I’d presume? Hopefully a new box, wire it up and hope the calibration values haven’t been damaged.
Talking of Mitchells’ we were told they were downsizing; They’ve got several new Scanias on the road and kept their older ones but sold off the “middle aged” ones.
I used to work for a firm that supplied and fitted Napper weighers.
You have either been fiddling and lost the tare off the unit
Or
There’s a wire going to earth on one of the weigh cells
Or
You have a broken weigh cell
In order of probability.
The only way to test a weigh cell with the display showing what you say is to open up the junction box and put a meter on various cell circuits and have someone wallop the cells in order with a hammer ( you need a meter that measures MIlivolts and MIlliamps ). If there is no change on the meter the cell is FUBAR

Why sell off the middle aged ones? I’d say they’ve kept the older ones due to easier to maintain & with the new ones under a R&M contract?
