So Andrew s what the best tool for the job then ?
The crane I bought is a epsilon, no mention of palfinger and no bucket, so as you seem to know a little bit about grabs which bucket should I go for and any idea how much they are ?
The crane is no more than 18 months old how much is it worth ?
and same age Thompson 15 cube steel body with subframe value ?
best grab crane is without a doubt a epsilon(palfinger are the parent company i think-)
the epsilon m125L is about the best alround crane at the moment(beware the computerised models though as its abit of a pain to disable the forcefield on these models)
the older E120L models were very good,my old 06 daf was fitted with one and gave no problems at all in nearly 4000 hrs apart from the obvious burst hoses.
as for buckets the Entacon bucket is king, much quicker to chuck a load on with than the kinsoffer style ones .
sorry i cant help with prices, just speaking as a driver thats been using grabs for about 15 years,so i know whats good and what isnt.
SH-07:
I’d stick with the older Scania. I’ve been told Mitchell’s wagons have been worked hard basically abused so that’s why they shift them after 2-3 years, if your gaffer can fix the lil niggles on the older Scania then you’re laughing.
.
mitchells are local to me and my old boss knew brendan mitchell very well.i really dont see that bpm’s scania’s have been “abused” at all.working a lorry hard doesnt mean its been abused ffs.
i have to say its not a firm i would work for because they dont pay that well, but all their kit is top notch and they run legal, and are a pretty big firm with their own transfer stations, recycled aggregate washing plant, readymix and quarry,so they are’nt running motors on a shoestring budget.
That was my boss was told by other people who asked advice for including a dealer. Matter of opinion that’s all.
Muckaway:
People slate Iveco but Clancy Docwra swear by them for their grab tipper fleet.
yeah and they also swear by HMF cranes(awful things) for their grab fleet.the reason they buy HMF is because they are much cheaper than palfinger-epsillon cranes.(palfinger epsillon are the best you can get).
perhaps they buy ivecos because they are also much cheaper than the best tool for the job?
Muckspreader:
Quick question which would you go for
All 8 wheelers, similar hp, similar bodies
Brand new
Daf 85 @ £63k
Iveco @ £59k
Hino @ £68k a 2012 though not registered
or a Scania 2010/11 with 180,000kms @ £63k ish
and why ?
Scania extended day cab every time there built well they last and hold there value the others are cheap for a reason you only get what you pay for

My mate works for docwra he reckons the ivecos are pants there forever breaking down you don’t see many iveco 8w tippers for a reason there ■■■■■ Italian skodas
And hinos I’ve never driven one but sat in one bit to cheap and cheerfull for my liking every owner driver I’ve spoke to reckons they wouldn’t buy one again usually saying it was cheap to buy the wagon but the parts are too pricey

i was lumbered with a 60 plate hino for about 18 months-dreadful motor.currently in a daf cf- pure luxury after the hino!!
given the choice although i really like the dafs(i think the older euro 3 versions were much better though) it would be a scania for me without a doubt.
Smiths Bletchington have a Hino on demo at the moment. I think a Hino wouldn’t be bad for low mileage work or if residuals are a concern. I’d recommend an onboard weigher with a 15m3 body with a grab,15m3 is fine if you can carry 19t but you might find staying legal is hard with a 16t payload.

with only one extender too
and the levers are all the wrong way round lol
the dafs have epsilons and its fun to see it when some gets one who has been on a HMF
i ended up on a lynch hino with one some years ago , driver came in from holiday to find his in the workshop and the hino as stand in ,so he went back home sick

the Ivecos just over 15t ,thats with a HMF with single extender

shouldnt need a weigher with a grab as you’re normally loading it yourself (obviously) and should be able to get it just right. as a general rule of thumb,4 buckets is roughly 3 ton.

I left school in 1976 and worked as a transport clerk for a tipper firm in Birmingham , they ran Leyland Clydesdale and Leyland Reivers with 9 yard and 15 yard bodies on them. We moved everything from topsoil , ■■■■■■■■■ , muck and our favourite was tarmac scalpings that we got from the resurfacing contracts. In those days we could keep the scalpings for ourselves and in no time we had built up a stockpile of a couple of thousand yards tipped at various sites around Brum. Then the ironic thing was is that we used to sell it back to the council at about £4 or £5 a yard for their road construction projects.
Do you guys remember " Hells Drivers " with Stanley Baker , our place was a bit like that then
Now it’s getting good
I haven’t got into weights as yet as I did actually assume they would be very similar as it’s a weight sensitive vehicle.
As for Scania no chance am I buying a new one of them at 100k
I am leaning towards the Daf the mpg isn’t so variable, the ground clearance is even better on the new CF, paint is no extra, manual box no extra, parts supply costs are pretty good.
The crane my god I’m glad it wasn’t a HMF then, sounds like I might of landed lucky.
Andrew s ‘10 grand cheaper’ how much do they cost new ?
Now I’m smiling, I think I may have got a bargain.

when i got this new (61 plate), my boss was moaning about the cost of the cranes going up.from memory i think it was 25 grand(but cant be sure i’m afraid)
My old place tab a fleet if 6 of them (newest was 06) and in the time I was with him (all together 6 years) the only time they had a spanner on them was for regular maint.
The DAF grab lorries we ran were a bag of ■■■■. Similar ages and miles. Similar use (probably less) broke far more often. Day cab is horrific with no space a crap seat and literally nowhere to out anything.
Their called Dial A Fitter for a good reason
You won’t beat a Thompson body though.
Sounds like you’ve done well there with the body and the crane.
Are you looking at grab work for a water company? Old pace had 4 on that and it pays well. There’s a fair bit of hoop jumping but once you’re on and the operator is squared away with tickets and the like it’s good.
They do spec the motor with a wacker and ball hitch as far as I know (all of ours had it) but that’s not insurmountable.
Not seen a Dennis that wasn’t a fire engine or a bin lorry for years.
