I pressure wash mine every night if I can or every other, depends on who’s infront of me. On wet muck shifts I’ll have a scrape around in the body if needed. Better than finding 2 tonnes stuck in there late in the afternoon.
Are you awake , “Muckaway” ?
This photograph is placed on here specially for YOU !!
Now then lad ,…which one would you like to drive today ?
The frilly pelmets are ready in the cabs
, and the washing and polishing are already done .
Foden and Scania , photographed on arrival at Truckfest Scotland , a couple of years ago.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Choices, choices…
…I’ll have the Alpha.
After spending most of the week hauling clay-like crap into Very-Poor at Ardley, I’d love to know how many of the h&s people suppose you’re meant to clean your body out without climbing into it. Especially when they wont provide a 360 to scrape it out, admittedly most of the time there’s not enough in there to risk damaging the floor and sides.
Maybe I’m too fussy (on Smiths they’re very strict on cleanliness, Earthline weren’t too bothered-I’m sure they thought I was odd when cleaning out).
Down in the Southwest 8 wheel tipper owner drivers are on £45-50 per hour hire!!! I use to have a 6 wheel tipper owner driver 10 yrs ago and was on hire for £30 per hour…but that was when derv was 90p per litre!!! ) I am employed again now but was good and made hay while the sun shone!!!
Muckaway:
But why is tear arsing around so much of a thing on tippers? Is it because the product is of low value thus low rates?
Be interesting to know what a good days’ turnover is for an 8wheeler. I’ve heard £450 per day.
My boss gets guaranteed day rate for his 8wheelers on the contract I work on. Earthline pay day rates too. Smiths do it on tonnage, which is love/hate when talking to different subbies.
Apparently if on Hansons with a 6wheeler, £350 is something to be grateful for. No wonder there aren’t scores of entrepreneurs queuing to have franchises.

Just looked in my old record book from my last year driving (2002) and with a six wheeler tipper it made between £200-£290 per day on average. My best day was -stone from Ashbourne, Derbys to Chasewater,(M6 toll road) Ashbourne to Chasewater again,(M6 toll road), tarmac from Atherstone to Nottingham, and stone from Cromford, Derbys to Churchbridge Cannock,(M6 toll road) and that made £339.83p. A lot of fuel through the pipes doing it! I was on 27% earnings. The following day I was on local stone, £160 for the day, good day usually followed by either poor days or no work at all, no consistency!
Pete.
my old firm used to hire us out(8 wheel grabs) for £40 per hr,minimum 10 hrs.
not much profit left out of £400 .they made money though because we would be tipping customers muck at our place and supplying materials.
Last Friday was my last day as a full time tipper driver for the company I work for after 3 years. The boss has made me the new TM/Planner in the office as our company is expanding. I will be doing the odd shift every so often covering drivers who are off. I’ve gotta say I’m actually looking forward to it and know that my experience as a driver will help me out with the planning of jobs etc.
Hansons have a massive campaign running to recruit company drivers, maybe they realize their business model of captive OD’s is now defunct due to the high cost of vehicles and no guarantee of earnings, but having said that some of the guys I know in my area are earning good money for the time being!

I’ve never seen no adverts, although a colleague who drives one of our Hanson 6wheelers has said the wages are pretty good but you go where they send you and can be out all week as their rigids have sleeper cabs. Hanson around here seem incapable of planning for the future. Cassington quarry is shut after they couldn’t get planning to extend, Stanton Harcourt has planning but is dormant (with a rusting closed concrete plant and conbloc works), Lechlade is just about finished but Sutton Courtenay has reopened but has been worked for 40 odd years so surely can’t have a long term future.
Oxford-based Sheehans’ have expanded recently; Just put 2x13 plate Hinos on the road.

Load bonus is a big no no,percentage of earnings much the same,if involved in a fatal RTA and it came out in court the driver was on bonus it would mean a long stay in the “big house” for all concerned, btw Tipper Tom if I could get in 12 loads of muckaway a day I’d have the big house in Virgina Water ( or Alderley Edge if up north ) and his & hers Range Rovers plus a Bugatti or Ferrari for the weekends
A firm in longridge i know you lose £10.00 for every half a tonne under 43.5 and pay is about £100.00 a day always maxing hours even need picking up on a sat to get home for one day quite crap for hard work
My boss has been told Hino now do a Euro 6, is this true? He’s been quoted silly money for 5 new Scanias and with the stupid wait for a bonnet release cable for my wagon (2 weeks), broken diff, broken propshaft and a blown engine on it’s sister wagon, they’re looking to get a demo from Hino. Been quoted as £40k per wagon less than Scania, with weighers, reversing cameras, auto sheets etc all thrown in.
Not seen one yet, still waiting but got to say the Euro 4 I have has been OK,no EGR variable geometry turbo problems as yet unlike certain Scandinavian or German marques!

I know they’ve shipped a load over here pre registered to avoid the Euro 6 regs. Do they have their own dealer networks or are they dealt with through Toyota, Isuzu etc?
Own dealer network,my local one is an ex Foden dealer a lot of them are, so they know their way round a dirty old muck tipper, they all seem to have stock ready to go so crack on!
Our newest arrivals are 08 reg P340s, ex Thames Materials. No traces of cyclist brain matter on them though but the interiors wont win any prizes at Truckfest.
BTW Harris’s in Dublin import/assemble them in Europe(used to assemble CKD Guys etc and various awful BL cars for the Irish Republic)
