Hi Guys.

Brocks, Purfleet

I wish you well with the new job chap.

Do you drive one of there old heaps

Who me? I work out of Castleford. I drive a 13 Scania Off-Road P400

No the fella on for brocks sorry for the confusion

Hi gents / lady’s. Do you no of any tipper jobs going in the north east County Durham area that I could aply for thanks

I can’t see what all the fuss is about wanting a new motor. Tippers or not tbh, I drove a 52 plate FM 420 in my last place followed by a 54 plate FM 500 (chipped) once I’d proved myself. I’m currently in an 06 FH chipped up to 570 and you can feel every one of them all. Unlike with this euro 5 crap where half the horses must be lame cos they don’t pull half as well as the old girls.

The sister wagon to mine is very heavy on oil, we think it’s a breather problem (you can see it spitting when idling). Is this a common fault?

yeah thats a common fault. On the v8s theres a square box with a square filter and also a round filter in there to not sure where they are on the other engines. If you get them replaced you should see the difference at the dipstick

Smiths Bletchington have put a Volvo FMX 8wheeler on the road today, which will see a Foden Alpha sold off. It looks nice, they’ve broke with tradition and dispensed with those oversize steel bodies. I suggested smaller bodies to reduce tare weight years ago and was practically laughed at.
I got back to our yard tonight and my boss has asked me if I’d drive the ex Smiths Foden he’s hoping to buy. Strange thing is, despite loving Fodens, I’m not so sure I want to come off my Scania to drive a cast-off from an ex employer.
Opinions??

Why is everything so bloody difficult for you?? :unamused:

You have a great boss…

You’re ALREADY driving someone else’s cast off…

You love Foden’s…

You’re asked to drive one…

and it’s still a problem??

Jeez!! There’s no pleasing some :unamused: :unamused:

Chez has a cracking motor - why would yours be any different?

Chez is coming off that Foden soon, Paul (she’s being retired for classic service). I’m in two minds whether to give up the motor I’ve got already as that IS a great motor. I’ve finally got a decent cb reception for the first time in years… I might have it if they cut down the body (had 11 years of “only half a load drive” )
The prospect of them chipping a 450 Cat is very appealing though.
Can a twin splitter be fitted to an Alpha?

Some early alphas had them. Seems an old motor to buy now whats spares avalibility like as i know some erf parts are getting hard to find already

Parts for Fodens are still available but not always new parts. You have to know all the contacts and ask around. Being dedicated, pleasant, polite, keen and grateful for all the help you get helps too. I hate new motors with a vengeance so run an old one. 4000 series.

Why do you hate new/newer trucks?

I’d guess it’s that there’s too much non essential stuff attached to them nowadays. Auto sheets and tailgates are a pain when they go wrong (it doesn’t take long to throw a rope over and drag over the old style easysheet, or to get out and do a tailgate pin up).
Those 4000s made great tippers. Great visibility, spacious, loads of storage room and they went well. An added bonus is that you can’t go into London either.

Understandable, however I’ve only just passed and been driving class 2 within the last 4 years so I’ve grown up knowing modern trucks driving 09/59/10/60 reg trucks & finally a 13 reg all with auto sheet & auto tailgate like.

Them Fodens I always heard my
Grandad say they were best tipper truck & he had a quite a few mixed with old Volvo FMs. Such a shame they’ve stopped making them as I’d love to drive one.

Too many electronics on the newer trucks. Warning lights come on for no real reason, when i do drive someone elses truck i ring in, so and so light has come on tells me to STOP what do you want me to do? Answer always, carry on it’ll go out. It does too but why come on in the first place, they do my head in. Limiters are a pain too, 36 miles an hour the other morning had to get a bit of assistance to cure that. I need the exercise getting in and out of the truck umpteen times a day to put sheet on and open and shut tailgate, can’t let myself get lazy, do a visual each time walk down the sides at tyres, wheel nuts lights etc. All part of truck driving.

The above is an example of using bias to justify a point.

The warning light comes on and goes off because there is a fault somewhere. It’s not been found and not been fixed because it would cost too much. That’s why the light comes on. Bugger all to do with it being a newer lorry.

My old 52 plate FM is not a lorry anyone could describe as “new” yet warning lights a plenty would come on.

I don’t like modern lorries because they have no character.

However easy sheet and auto tailgate has been available since at least 2002 I wouldn’t be without one because it stops the muck getting into the can. You don’t need to live in ■■■■ as a tipper driver

2002, easy sheets have been around far longer than that, the firm Easysheet were making the things in the 1970’s
the muck away flip over type wont be any where near as old, before rules and regulations were invented I don’t think many hauliers bothered sheeting muck! lol

Talking of which, I have to take my shovel off the bracket to use my sheet as the handle catches the rolled up mesh (how can mesh stop dust?).
I regard my auto tailgate as semi automatic; I can open it from the cab, but I always have to clean it after tipping or it wont close tight enough. I don’t mind this as it gives me time to check my lights are clean and to clean debris off the push block. I can never understand why most tipper drivers never clean it.

I was making a point that easy sheet can’t be called modern technlogy.

When I was on tippers I would tip then drive to a cleaner area to clean off the tail board and have a check round of lights tyres etc.

I’d hose my lorry off every night, lights, glass, steps etc. I’d also flick round the cab. If you do it every day it doesn’t take 5 minutes.

Once a week it would be fully pressure washed greased and cleaned inside.

It baffles me how some folk can keep on living in ■■■■.
