If you’re going to be on quarry work, you’ll need an EPIC card for most of them if not all of them these days. Very easy/boring day, not a pass or fail situation but you’ll have to do it. About £110ish.

BB

Have you ever been asked to show yours? Had mine since they first started and it’s never been out of the wallet. Our firm paid for all ours plus our most regular subbies so they’d work for us whilst we were on the course. The EPIC card’s a joke as none of the ex pit customers in their pickups have it yet they still are allowed into our sites.

I got my EPIC card in november like Muckaway its yet to see sun light again.I spent nearly 8 hours of my life on a Saturday stitting a classroom on a coarse which at most should of been 2 hours but it all goes to my DCPC.
My company paid for it at £160+vat then had to buy me new boots because my ones are not suitable for quarries more expense

And you were probably lectured on how to load tarmac, how to unload it into a paver, how to unload when it’s a barrow job, and how to ensure the safety of the man at the pit who takes samples? We had to sit through this despite numerous comments that we don’t do asphalt! :unamused:
I did a similar thing when operating plant; I already had a CITB ticket to operate onsite, aswell as NVQs yet it apparently didn’t qualify me to drive in the pits. It’s all a money making con yet companies comply without protest…

My favourite bit was about tipping aggregates was about undoing the tail board then backing up to tip
I would like to see them do that with grain undo the tailboard then watch 5 ton of wheat appear in the way of the lorry so you cant reverse any more

The bar on my tailgate must’ve been damaged once as I could undo the pin and the door would stay shut until the body was up about a third of the way; This was great for landfill work as I could open it up before driving into the crappy areas. Only problem was that a jobsworth had my wagon on my day off and complained on H&S grounds regarding the “jammed tailgate”. Cue a load of shingle on the road the day I came back

Que Gavin from Autoglass

Lucky I always used the pin! It only spilt about 10yards from where it was needed and the mahine driver was surprised to see it open too!
Re. Gavin from Autoarse; surely I’m not the only person who wants to rip my radio out when those ads come on?

I dont listern to Heart,Jack or the other dross radio stations round oxfordshire Radio 2 or CDs

Got Jack on ch1 (too old for Student Radio 1) the other 4 spaces are taken up by BBC Stations like Oxford, Glos, Wilts so traffic news comes on automatically. I’ve no interest in BBC Oxford apart from that as hearing about Doris’ cat getting run over/ lead from the Church getting nicked/someone doing Lands End-John O’Groats on a pogo stick put me to sleep…

Hansons have made it a rule now on entering their Kidlington rail siding site, you have to sign in and quote your EPIC number. It’s all because a Cleaver driver thought it’d be a good idea to tip an artic on uneven ground… :unamused:

You always get a special one lol :unamused:

TheFan46:
lol quality post’s lads! :grimacing:
i mean quarry work and on a rigid :grimacing:

And you’ll be expected to pre-judge where weight limits start and finish in all towns and cities; Me and a mate had 2 loads from Burford to Tewkesbury each, today, (that was a days work so not all tipper driving is rush rush rush!) I knew that a weight limit started near the A38 Ashchurch junction; the sodding thing ended just 200 yards before our delivery point, thus being the good driver I am, worked out a route off the M50, A38S, and then Bredon Road (near the marina) for the second, no weight limits broken that time :grimacing: and no extra bonus :imp:

And all lawns left in tack ■■? sorry mate couldnt resist it lol

No lawns there Fred, for “only” £189000, you get a one bed apartment that’s just right for flooding! We took crushed stone there for the builders new compound; I asked the banksman why they’d not bought recycled ■■■■■■■■ and apparently, they cant use anything on site with dust in it as it would alter the flow of surface water in the event of a flood like the one they had in July '07; But the fact they’re built on a blatant flood plain (not a mile from the disused Tewkesbury Mill) doesn’t feature in the architects planning… :unamused:

my only advice for tipper driving is just make sure when you tip ur on solid level ground have seen quite a few go over in the tips . i been on the tippers for about a year and half its the best job ive had. only thing i dont like is having to sit all the london traffic everyday

i dont have a epic and i never get asked for it when i go into bretts ,hansons lafarge etc . sounds like a total waste of money to i will only sit it
if my employer is paying also watch your weight as other people have said on here and when u muckaway jobs that are wet it weigh more than the dry stuff so make sure you watch what the machine driver puts on you cause he will still load you right up and some of the tips we use are now charging extra for being over your legal weight as i recently found out :open_mouth: once you reconize what the matierials look like your laughing i couldnt tell what any of them were other than crushed concrete when i first started muck to the annoyance of some shovel drivers but hey everyones gotta learn eh be happy to awnser any other questions you have  :grimacing:

as for money i would go for anything less than £400 quid a week take home but be prepared to put in some hours

i’m not bother about the hours i’ve allways wanted to doing after spending every holiday as a kid with my dad in his wagon
400 a week is good i’m taking around 1400 a month home i know it aint much of a difference and my hours are shorter but i’m not happy being a fitter anymore and i want to follow in my old boys footsteps before its too late :grimacing:

Fan46, I see you’re from Leices, why don’t you approach Selbys’ Garage? They’ve got nice tidy tippers and get around a lot of quarries even down Oxford way. Might be an advantage to try Lafarge or Ag industries to see if any of their franchise hauliers have vacancies as these 2 companies have a lot of pits along the M1 corridor…For longer hours the asphalt hauliers would be a good choice as they work nights whereas muck and dry aggs are limited due to site opening times and quarry planning rules. I do barely above 50 hours a week :grimacing:
