Be careful of rates above the £9 p/h mark as these will be flatout Hell driver outfits. Working for ODs and subbies is harder, whereas if the company have their own quarries it tends to be less stressful as the firm make money on product and haulage. Some may pay a load bonus although I’ve heard the number that do are getting less as it’s legality is a grey area. If it’s a muckshifting outfit, check their wagons have on-board weighers or you may find yourself donating to VOSA…
Hiya muckaway…ha ha har.i was on a tipper quite a few years ago(the regular driver was on holiday) well i just could,nt get over this
machine driver every load 20.5 tons of sand i was doing 4 loads a day (easy life)in out no waiting,it occured weeks later that if i was
a couple of ton over they said nothing and i was off like a shot.it was a long time ago and the scales was a balance beam idea
and you never saw anything like a didgical read out and the ministry men wasent so invasive as these vosa men. BUT what a sucker
i was.I think they toted up the weight of the sand and charged the costomer for the weight, then made out we was carring 20 ton loads
John
Our weighbridge men get asked occasionally to “bump up” the weight on the ticket (they don’t) by ODs who want the work then moan they can’t earn unless they’ve got 20 ton on when they can only carry 18.5. Tough luck, should’ve bought a lighter truck…

Earthline are looking for drivers at the mo.
I’ve noticed they have a lot of new MAN’s.
They seem to switch manufacturers…I stand to be corrected but I’ve heard all their wagons are contract-leased.

I"m like Toowise i spend my time between farms and factories
I"m paid by the hour you get your jobs the night before there is no reason to break the law on weights or hours. For example i ran out of time 20mins from the yard and was told to park up and have a night out
If your doing mills or docks etc have a good book to hand you could be half an hour or half a day
On farms again Toowise hit the nail on the head i have a Daf 105XF the mirrors certainley show the marks from lanes as do the steps
The dogs will eat you or hump you and most of them stink lol
Dont be shy with a broom
I do earn over £10p/h but i dont have to drive like a hell driver (only by choice
)
Oh one last thing be prepared to thought of as the scum of the driving world everyone hates a tipper driver lol
Were you on anything good going down the M4 Tuesday afternoon near J17? Two of us were on a nice jolly, 2 loads between Hullavington and Malmesbury, backloading sand from Kempsford
TheFan46:
lol quality post’s lads!
i mean quarry work and on a rigid
In that case the job will be on a crap rate, the pay will probably be % of wagon earnings and the term drive it like you stole it
will often be used.

Agree, some, but not many, do pay a decent rate. Its not the drivers or the company it
s the pants rate from the quarries. Mate of mine owns his own 8 legger, yet has put a driver on it while he works in the quarry on a forklift cause it pays more!
TheFan46:
as title say’s really just want to know what sort of money you can earn
is it hourly pay? is it day rate? or paid by load if so roughly how much? i’ve spoke to a few lads but they aint really gave anything away
just trying to find out as possably a future job
If I were you, I’d go on hours, establish what your basic week is & what your overtime rate is going to be before you take the job. Establish what holiday entitlement you’ll have & ensure it’s correct.
Lots of companies pay well & are fair with hours, holidays & overtime etc but some take advantage on everything. A haulier who keeps his drivers long term will be the one to go for, others with big driver turnover should be left alone. No matter what people say, it’s not only tipper firms who rip drivers off on wages & holidays, I know several who work their guts out but aren’t on hours. They get the same wage no matter what their input has been.
For me, it’s a good hourly rate, with known basic hours & full holiday entitlement plus acceptance that I don’t run bent that would be my priorities…
If you’re going to be on quarry work, you’ll need an EPIC card for most of them if not all of them these days. Very easy/boring day, not a pass or fail situation but you’ll have to do it. About £110ish.
