I’ve been working for 1 of the big logistics firms for the last 3 & a half years, tramping Mon-Fri, got a Merc Megaspace, so a decent bit of kit to be tramping in. For the last 6 months we’ve been told we’re gonna be getting the new MP4 Merc Megaspace cabs to replace the Mega’s we’ve got now.
All well & good so far, until a couple of weeks ago when the ‘new’ units turned out to be old shape Actros midi’s (apparently they got a good deal on them ), you know the 1’s, 1 small bunk, piddly little lockers, & no space to swing a rat (no, that’s not a spelling mistake). Over the past couple of weeks the regular drivers have been moved onto the new units, cue much moaning & questioning of our TM, as to his competence & his parentage amongst other things. Our old Actros’s, which most of us have had since day 1, & have been kept clean & tidy, have now been handed over to our agency staff.
Also, we employed drivers are salaried for 48 hours, we’re regularly pushed past that & it’s a constant battle with our planner, especially on a Friday, to keep us at 48 hours per week. We’re on a laden mileage bonus scheme aswell, for every km we’re laden, we get anything from 4-10p per km, so, a good week with a few reloads thrown in & it’s possible to earn £160 bonus. A tidy sum that tops up our average weekly wage.
Just lately I’ve noticed I’m not getting much in the way of bonus, especially since our new planner took over about a year ago. So, last week when I bumped into 1 our our regular agency lads, a really nice bloke I’ve had many a chat with over the last 6 months, I asked him how many back loads he’d had the previous week, 5 was his answer. I’ve not had 5 in a week since I’ve been there .
So, now I’m working for a company that seems to treat its agency drivers better than its own regular staff. Because agency drivers are hourly paid, I find myself in the ludicrous situation where, not only are our agency drivers paid more than us regulars, they’re also given the best kit to do the job aswell.
So, apologies for the long diatribe, enough is enough & I think I’m going to be seeking new employment in the new year.
