Three sheets to the wind while tramping

hi all

watching yet another repeat of traffic cops on bbc1 last night showing a hgv driver twice?? the DD limit just wondered really how many alcoholic drinks you drink if you fancy few when you parked up for 9/11 hour before you’d know your ‘limit’ so not to be ‘over the limt’ next morning

personally never drunk alchohol while tramping, i keep that as something to look forward to on my return to the yard end of the week :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: , have nothing against it and very often see drivers coming out services with a 4 pack of beer etc

just wondered really, as i think i’d have one can only, would be afraid to have any more just in case but everyones different i guess.

I’m not holier than though and hold my hands up to having a couple on a night away. Never go stupid like some drivers but its always in the back of my mind about being ok in the morning. Noemally 2 is enough to send me to sleep instantly and not hear anything all night, not that that is the reason behind it, I just find it helps me unwind. That said, I am not away 4/5 nights a week

I carry a hip-flask of whiskey…just for the occasional tipple.
I top it up only every 2 weeks, so don’t think i’m a big drinker

I used to go out and have a couple of pints most nights, especially in summer at the end of a long, hot day. Nothing better than a couple of pints to relax and wash the dust down! Very rarely go out now due to cost of it, try and save my night out money during the week to treat the family on a weekend! I find most people will be fine on 2 pints the next morning. Saying that I have seen drivers drinking excessively and come out the pubs steaming!

very rarely have a pint while im in work now days, if i was to go to the pub reckon i would have two and head home, im a bookworm so prefer to have a brew and a read

The generally accepted rule is one hour for every unit of alcohol to get into your system and another hour for every unit of alcohol already in to get back out. hope this helps

Just watched it on the iplayer… bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 … tractions/

Looks like the mrs driver had been on the lash all day, I will have a beer of an evening but I couldn’t imagine drinking while I was work, I would have thought the first place you delivered to would either refuse to tip you or phone the police and report you.

that’s ok, as long as you’re a tramper!

If you attempt to get into your car while under the influence, the police can knick you.

Wonder if thats the same for getting into the cab (home for the night) while tramping.

I’m sure there was a test case and if it’s a sleeper I think your ok someone’s bound to know a bit more. I’d imagine a camper would be the same.

S4 (3) For the purposes of subsection (2) above, a person shall be deemed not to have been in charge of a motor vehicle if he proves that at the material time the circumstances were such that there was no likelihood of his driving it so long as he remained unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

S5 (2) It is a defence for a person charged with an offence under subsection (1)(b) above to prove that at the time he is alleged to have committed the offence the circumstances were such that there was no likelihood of his driving the vehicle whilst the proportion of alcohol in his breath, blood or urine remained likely to exceed the prescribed limit.

So if you are out of hours, or have completed your tacho formalities for the day or you have documentation showing, for example that you are delivering in the morning to the factory outside which you are parked then you have a defence to any charge.

This might help on whether its worth sleeping it off or giving it a miss…

there has been occasions falling out of alconbury bar at 2300 with a 2am start but now adays just a couple if its a hot day, otherwise im not bothered.

I often have a drink when I’m parked up. Sometimes pub, sometimes cans. Why shouldn’t I be able to relax and have a drink■■?

As a guide it takes approx 1 hour per unit to leave the body - half pint = 1 unit.

Work it out an think again :open_mouth:

will only drink cider, nothing else,if i get pulled im telling them its part of my five a day fruit racition,APPLLES,apple a day or two or three keeps the doctor away, mum used to always tell me that, god bless her

Ive already said that but more comprehensively!!! I often think its a waste of time trying to educate the thicko,s on here though matey the transport game seems to attract luddites and those of very limited intelligence  We can only keep trying

I don’t know how we got away with it in the 1980’s, it was considered anti-social to not go out with the other drivers for a few sherbets, especially on a Thursday night.
There were more town centre lorry parks then as well as more pubs to visit.
Dunno how we survived really. :open_mouth:

It was par for the course to park up with as many other drivers you knew whether from your firm or not and have a good drink, especially if it was a Friday. Have to say I didn’t know anyone that needed a drink during the day, there might have been but I was never told of any. I remember though as a kid working in the workshop for the company my Dad drove for and being told about a guy that kept four bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale in the cab and he had one for breakfast and the rest during the day, every day. I thought it was just talk but when I had to do a job on his motor one day sure enough there was three full bottles and an empty in the cab, it was around 8 O’clock in the morning. This was the Sixties and I doubt he would have been able to do that during the Eighties and onwards. Once the purge on next morning breathalizers started it killed a lot of the socialising, most blokes just having a pint or two. Franky.

i can say i dont drink anymore or smoke god im sounding boring  but never drunk while down road i sleep to heavy as it is i would never surface after a good drink.

I don’t drink anymore - but I don’t drink any less either
Actually, that’s a lie - in the 80’s (as has been mentioned) you were classed as a miserable bar steward if you didn’t have a couple of pints when parked up; but now I never have more than two when I’m up the road. Just finished my first can - time for my second.
