Three People in the Cab

I know this has been discussed before but I can’t find the link.

What is the legal position nowadays about having an unrestrained passenger sitting on the bunk while the vehicle is in motion?

Paint your truck blue and make sure one passenger is blonde and then tell them you’re filming a Challenge Anneka reboot if you get pulled.

Builder’s merchants will be ■■■■■■■■ themselves.

Or just make sure one pretends they’re asleep on the bunk.

The law only mentions seat belts, two seats, two belts

I always carry plenty of duct tape and tie wraps. None of my passengers could ever be classed as unrestrained.

I believe the traditional truck driver methods of lady restraint are a rolled-up carpet and a lay-by. :stuck_out_tongue:

Would still appreciate the legal position on this.

You say traditional, I say archaic. Times change, don’t get left behind.

Harry, why don’t you ring your insurance company and ask them how many people are insured to travel in your truck with two seats?

Because the spotty 17 year old on the other end of the phone won’t know but someone on here might.

Common practice from the Taliban out here , if not four per truck . One with the forged licence , one to cook and clean , and the other two yelling directions and ■■■■■■■■ through the hole they drilled in the floor of the Freightshaker .
Welcome to driving 21st century style :stuck_out_tongue:

Are you planning on taking missus and kids out?

It’s definitely not illegal to have more adults in a vehicle than seatbelts but the one’s fitted must be worn.

Harry its all down to the insurance on that particular truck. A Swiss firm I was with had a write off in Spain with 2 hitch hikers on board who were killed. The driver did a runner & the parents rang the boss of the firm who knew nothing about the accident. It was only by luck the truck was fully insured. Your insurers are the only ones that can tell you. Be careful.

I don’t know about trucks being different, or even the seat belt issue but have read reports of drivers being prosecuted for having more people in cars than the car has seats.
I guess under the laws that govern that , that it would be an offence to have more than 2 in a cab that has only 2 seats regardless of the seat belt issue.
But I have no genuine knowledge for a definative answer.

Whilst serving time as a recovery driver I was told that I could legally only carry as many passengers as there were seat belts. But being told that’s the law don’t necessarily make it so does it?

You could always pm Roadsrat Harry, and continue your bonding process!

What about child seats? My firm allow passengers and I love to take my 2 year old when running local.

Suppose this will be the “one rule for us, a different rule for them” syndrome ?

Harry, thats a serious question, and i would think ist not up to your insurance company, but is in fact written in law, i would go down that route, and ask the local traffic officer, if you see a removal crew nowadays, they have built a specially adapted crew cab, whereby the crew sit on the upper deck, leaving a driver and 1/2 helpers in the main cabin.
As has been stated, if there are 2 seats, you need 2 seatbelts, same as with 3 seats, for most seats come attached with the seat belts anyway, so i would look at the alternative of 1. getting a double passenger seat ( if thats possible to fit in)
2. buy yourself a Magnum, and get rid of that piece of ■■■■■■ you call a truck
