this year is shaping up to be the best one out of the last 6 years. profits were well up last year according to the accountants — so it’s all good so far — the accountants are trying to save me more money - don’t know what they’re going to do this time round thought i’d seen it all last year…
i’ve got an order book that’s brimming to the point where i’ve actually taken the very brave and bold move of hiring an extra pair of mitts — never thought that i’d have enough work to do this

i’ve ended up with 3 jobs running side by side in manchester - the civil engineering project i’m on now that runs till sunday and a long termer that starts sunday night working with the railways and another housing job that’s a long termer that’s set for monday morning start
so with a bit of help from the guys and girls at the plant hire firm near here we selected a short list and i’ve taken the plunge with a newly qualified and fully bobcat trained tele flt driver and a hired in a 14mtr Bobcat tele flt for him to use cos i got it for a reduced fee
he is only having to service a new build housing estate with 7 gangs on it from day 1 – (blue r…sed and fly spring to mind) summat i’ve done a lot in the past — aren’t i kind to my new staff — starting wage £10p/h mon - fri (expecting him to do 50 hours which is normal), £15p/h sat morning (4 hours which is pretty much normal).
the contract is run like this he goes in does his job gets paid for 10 hours a day (£100p/d) even if he gets to finish early - 4 hours on saturday (£60) (total £560p/w minus tax and NI) and goes home there are no other schemes or benefits of any kind - the only thing that he’ll get is the company uniform black sweatshirt, white shirt, black trousers, CAT steel toe sneakers, white hard hat and a hi viz padded bomber style jacket — all logo’d up. put simply he works as a subbie contracted to my firm for the duration of the contract.
and to top it all off i’m still making plenty out of this job too
it’s hell of a lot cheaper for me to do it this way and apparently all my extra costs like employers NI etc… can be offset against my tax liabilities (accountants for you) — happy days

got the boys at the skip hire firm involved as well for shifting my gear around well sorted move that suggestion was — just tied everything down onto the hooklifting flatbed and away it all went with no probs

this was part of the reason why i’m doing my ocpc later this year. thought i’d get more work later on but my books are full now and i can see them getting more full so more trucks to transport etc…
still haven’t seen anything that i really like…but think that roro is going to be a real asset later on…
i’m glad that things have turned round but it’s created more headaches than i wanted tbh and although it’s always nice to know that i got plenty to do all the time there’s only so much that one person can do so i can see me recruiting again in the not too distant future…more headaches…
and am i gunna need a roro driver…as well…more headaches cos more personalities to balance…
Think I know your new employee, is he called Harvey and got big ears?
you’re only having a craic cos you don’t know how to respond in anything other than a childish manner so go stick your thumb in your mouth and go sit facing the corner - there’s a good boy
as for my firm it’s seriously healthy and will ride out another recession extension if it happens. unlike you and yours cos obviously with comments like that you gotta be well in the red and are just taking the P cos you not got a way out at least i know that me and my staff will all be eating exceedingly well for a long time to come - thankyou.
Can see this topic being more amusing than the scania t-cab lol
so your new machine operator is working for £10 an hour-seems very cheap-is he newly qualified?
from his £560 what does he take home?
I figure that if anyone can keep their head above water as we go through the worst recession in living memory, then they aren’t doing too badly and should be well-placed to ride the next wave.
Can I be first to apply for the drivers job.
Blinged up T-cab hook loader, spots, stacks, polished alloys and tank, bull fighting spears and chromed nudie women.
Then me in my black trousers, white shirt, sneakers and padded and logo-ed bomber jacket, I can’t wait. I’ll need a ■■■■■■ stick to keep the birds away.
I take it cash will be the same @£560 pw, double bubble on sundays. All for moving 2 machines on “ahem” long term contracts.
This could be my dream job and you could be a dream gaffer. When do I start boss ?

That job would carry you over until the recession ends after all how much longer can it go on , my moneys on it ending soon
the truck drivers job — it’s not just a truck drivers job — the person that does actually end up with the job won’t just be sat in a truck enjoying themselves — the person that is chosen WILL have a cpcs A17D telehandler license and preferably A17D inc. slew and it must be a blue card - the person chosen WILL also have a cpcs A23 skidsteer loader again blue card - the person will also have a Class II lic. with a minimum of 5yrs experience for insurance reasons.
the wages are industry standard - most firms pay less than £10p/h and often minimum wage — also the wages as i’ve outlined are actually a ■■■■ sight better than those of the transport industry so don’t start slagging me off when most truck drivers work for far less than this. at least most construction sites finish after a 9 hour day and from what i’ve been reading about truck wages on various boards on this website the person chosen would be earning approx. the same after tax as a truckie working 70hours a week - so i really don’t see where your arguement is with this point - my staff will go home at t time everyday unlike most truck drivers.
The person that is chosen will be very busy not just looking after one person and their kit but the way my books are at the moment there’s likely to be 30 tele trucks plus associated kit and 20+ skidsteers and associated kit going all over the place ---- most of what my firm does is short term. Yes i’ve got 2 long term contracts but that’s it most people just want a few days here there and everywhere sometimes there’s a full week sometimes there’s 3 or 4 jobs per week as well as the other stuff - this is due to the amount of contacts that i’ve built up over the years. the person that gets to drive the truck will be covering an area roughly from bangor (wales) to leeds (W - E) and roughly manchester to penrith (S - N). the person driving the truck will also be expected to drive tele or skidsteer on any day — it’s not all driving a truck. a lot of work i’m planning now is for 6 months time and i’ve taken some bookings that are after this date. i’ll be taking on staff for about the next 3 months just to try and cope with the volume of work that i’ve got booked.
issac hunt — someone else with big ideas and more imagination than reality will ever allow for - the truck will be a 8x4 roro ex. skip yard (in other words battered but works) - nothing fancy just one that works and has a manual gearbox - it’ll prolly be covered in allsorts given where it’s likely to be coming from — all this clean tidy and stuff — omg you’ve obviously never been on a proper building site then - ever cos quite frankly nothing is ever clean for long.
the uniform comes as standard - i have a book full of names and nunbers of operators and quite a few of them have (like me) a class I/II - that are all tried and tested, i also know that 2 or 3 of these people use this website — the uniform makes the company more visible and therefore is better for marketing purposes, it also makes us clean and tidy and the staff on my books really like it — it also makes the company appear clean and tidy as well as well organised.
take the ■■■■ all you like cos the one thing that we won’t take is f^&*&n s$%t wages - too many hours for too little reward given the level of responsibility that goes with being a truck driver - let alone putting your reputation at stake. if you really are going to be saying that £10p/h is too low then go and tell your boss that you’re not getting enough - oh hang on i just realised in this forum you are the boss in which case you need to up your rates so you can pay yourself more…
the way the figures stack up — well lets just say that my bank manager is going to be very satisfied with the way things are going and they’re inline to exceed last years figures by a very, very big margin…
foxy stars aka walter mitty,
you said the machine driver you have taken on is paid £560 less his tax and ni-and that he is a subbie.
in that case his national insurance doesnt come out of his wages-he pays it himself,as i do as a subcontractor on the CIS (construction industry scheme)
if you’re going to tell lies at least get your facts straight.like i said before stop wasting peoples time that are offering genuine advice to people on this forum…
I see the give it, but can’t take it gang is back out to play
