The Wind is taking it toll

The driver killed was a Neil Bomfords driver. Long way from home and terrible for his family. RIP

Marty B7:
Its time the government put a regulation in place where there is amber warning for gale force winds lorries over a certain height are parked up.
The whole Scottish rail network was shut down this morning and rightly so .
Planes get cancelled, ferry sailings stopped etc…
But the most vulnerable form of transport (hi sided trucks) are expected to get on with.
As for being threatened with a P45 for parking up , id like to see that one in court .

Some drivers shoot themselves in the foot right enough . The guy who thought it was smart to go over the Friarton Bridge at Perth, has no doubt had a very very luck escape , but he will no doubt fined himself with points on his licence for his stupid actions .
That Bridge was closed to hi-siders as of 05:30 but he ignored the warning.

Stay safe guys !

I’ve been told who the driver on the Friarton Bridge was and I know him. Let’s just say his actions didn’t surprise me. :unamused:

Some drivers don’t help themselves though.2 blown over on the Ouse bridge M62 at Goole rather than go round.

you’ll more than likely have a P45 waiting for you in your pigeon hole when you get back. TM’S these days don’t give a [zb] about drivers welfare or safety, all they care about is the load gets from A-B and earns the company money. :unamused:

+1. Nobody out there gives a zb about us, we are a replaceable commodity Judy like the goods we carry…

+1^ You forgot to mention hated by most of the UK drivers in this country; sorry to generalise but most would drive by without a second thought for you and probably a smile on their face too IMHO; Cynical me…? Never.

Sorry to hear what happened to you…glad youre ok, trucks after all are lumps of metal and replaceable, you arent  Just out of interest on this thread did you mention to the office in any respect not going on? If so what was their response?

I’d be taking sometime off to get over this, it’s easy to be a hero and go back in, you have to think what’s right FOR YOU.

The A628 Woodhead pass has been closed to high sided vehicles.

Whats considered high sided though?

What I have seen quoted is, any vehicle that is higher than its width.

I think there should be some serious questions asked over this one, the thread in general…I mean we are not only endangering our own lives but those of others that share the roads with us. If you feel in anyway compelled to do this and a tragedy happens it’s too late. We all know the choice ultimately is ours. However, given that it is our line of work and there will always be others that risk it, which in a way tacitly push you along to do the same along with office bods who couldnt give a monkeys. Should there not be a general rule of thumb to take this ultimately difficult decision away from the driver? I know…i’ll get this…I’ll do what I want, I have the keys crap. However, perhaps NQD wouldnt take the same approach as more experienced drivers and feel the need to prove that they have balls of steel along with a large life insurance policy should the worse happen…open for debate…

PS I’m saying this because we ALL have taken these risks and got home and thought WTF did I do that? Just my thoughts.

Quite nice here today … err, No it aint :frowning:

If you took that picture youre in the wrong line of work; great shot :sunglasses:

Don’t anyone take this the wrong way, but the way it should be is that YOU as the person in charge of and responsible for this LGV must be the one to decide when it is safe to take it onto the public highway.

Bring back common sense (?) and lets stop leaving the decisions of safety to people sat in ivory towers trying to impress the office totty and the boss.

YOU are there - they aren’t!

Dont take this the wrong way either please…there are rules as has been said above for OTHER industries where the decision IS TAKEN away. Why not our industry? Common sense tends to go out of the window when youre faced with the dole que and no money especially at Xmas time…I do take your point, however, it should be taken away from us IMHO as after all we are jointly liable in the matter. Do you agree?

i’d be in favour being told to park up, common sense or not.

at the moment you’re in a dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t situation. until you’ve been blown over you don’t know where the limit is, it feels worse with modern tall cabs, quite often when you’re getting buffeted all over the place you look in the mirror and the trailer looks fine, it’s just the cab, at least that’s how it looks!

don’t forget not all bosses who want to sack someone are daft enough to give someone a p45 for an unsackable offence!

i say let someone who’s looking at a wind speed meter, weather maps etc and someone who’s done some tests in some trucks in the wind decide

Let us suppose the said company we work for goes BUMP! The disaffected parties then take out a private prosecution again you, the driver? Nothing stopping them doing that…after all YOU knew the risks but took them. There are criminal implications too, gross negligence…shall we go on?

Don’t think it works like that imho. Johnny on the spot (you) will usually be the scape goat anyway when the brown stuff hits.

All I’m saying is that the decision should be yours to make and if there is enough info (weather reports, official ‘advice’ etc) then the call you make should be seen to be right whatever the outcome may be and you should have no fear of retribution.

And thats why there is public liability insurance and the burden of proof of blame or negligence would be on the shoulders if the claimant.

If the insurance underwriters/companies where to put a clause in their t&c’s regarding driving in severe weather conditions (ie refusing to pay out ) then this would stop those heartless/clueless office bods threatening a drivers lively hood ect ,There needs to be better protection for employees for this ,as well as proctection for employers from customers, in that it’s seen as an act of god, or as BT openreach put it MBORC (Matters beyond our reasonable control) once a severe weather warning has been issued any delays it’s tuff ■■■■■■■ if it’s delayed end of, is the way things should be and from a drivers point of view nothing is more important than yourself, load and truck come after that, and they can be replaced, you can’t, as said out on the road you are basically on your own ,and soon forgotten should you perrish whilst trying to earn a coin

I came off the boat at Immingham this morning. Drove up the M180, M18, A1, A66 and M6. I had a couple of hairy moments but nothing too bad. I was driving a 4m high euroliner with about 10t load. That wagon hadn’t blown over when I came over the 66. It had by the time I’d had my break at The Fleece.
Why should I have parked up ? Because YOU think it’s too dangerous for me to carry on?
I’ll park up when I think it’s too dangerous, I don’t need you or anyone else to make my mind up for me thanks very much.
My boss will accept my decision. He’d rather his wagon and load (and driver) get back in one piece with the goods in deliverable condition.
I’ll park up when I think it’s too dangerous because I lost a mate a few years ago to the wind. Another mate was 100 yards or so behind the one who got blown over, he still hasn’t fully recovered from that experience. He got home tonight as well.
