He was a limper so they probably over booked and used it as an excuse

There are plenty of places that won’t let you on site in shorts. Simplest solution is to carry a pair of trousers with you just in case. But for a company to use it as an excuse to refuse you a days work is ridiculous!
Yep, agency.
‘I drove home to get changed into my normal work pants, intending to go back. But my agency told me the firm had rung them and said they didn’t want me back, ever again. I’m staggered’
It looks to me like either they wanted to get rid of him and used the shorts thing as an excuse or he got verbal when told he couldn’t wear shorts so they told his agency not to send him there again.
Graeme Woods, 40, hit out at ‘health and safety gone mad’ after his manager refused to let him take his truck on the road on Tuesday
That may be the answer right there.
I don’t really understand why shorts are not allowed for a lorry driver unless his job involves delivering to peoples homes or offices.
It’s pretty annoying that alot of the places I go to with loads of scrap metal insist on long sleeves and trousers, like that’s going to do alot if a few tons worth of metal falls on you.

Well actually that’s perfectly understandable from a H&S point of view, there are sharp edges everywhere and the long sleeves and trousers would help prevent a lot of minor to significant gashes, I remember reading somewhere that there is more downtime through small seemingly insignificant “at work” injuries than there is for major accidents/incidents.
It’s a bit like the brickie saying hardhats are pointless if that crane drops a slab of preformed concrete on my head, and then has a half brick kicked off the scaffold above and bounce off his hardhat.
I know a driver that wears shorts in all weathers. Could be -15 outside and he’ll still be in shorts. All started over a pound bet a few year back
'‘I take pride in my appearance when I’m working’
That’s pride in his appearance? Good grief. As for saying it’s still not great even with aircon he sounds like a right moaner.
The guy says he takes pride in his appearance!! Has he looked in the mirror, he looks like a tipper driver that hasn’t been home for a month.

Hardly terrible looking though was he in the pictures, I reckon 50% of the trampers I see in our yard everyday look worse than that… And probably 75% of the day men…
I had a drop at big London Square developments site yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to see every single worker and site agent in shorts.
While at a scrap place, or a green waste station, I can see the value in ensuring everyone on site has long sleeves and trousers on, to have it on sites where there is little to danger of getting scrapped its a total waste of time, and just narks everyone off for no reason at all.
Office staff don’t like to see drivers wearing shorts on a hot day because shorts are obviously more comfortable than long trousers, and office staff aren’t allowed to wear shorts because of office dress code. Therefore they try to prevent drivers from being any less uncomfortable than they are but dress it up as “Health and Safety” because that sounds better than saying “we are petty and vindictive”.
He doesn’t look that bad, OK a bit rough around the edges but what do you want from a truck driver?
As long as his clothes are clean, he doesn’t stink and appears to wash regularly, I think that’s all a company can ask of a truck driver!
Yes there are those that like to be immaculately turned out, and may look down the noes of those that aren’t as stringent, or possibly ■■■■ about their appearance, but it doesn’t really give them a right to judge in my opinion.
So what if I haven’t plucked my nasal hair this month?

nail on the head there my good man…his face wouldn’t have fitted and it was an excuse to bin him.

Why pluck your nasal hair ? just grow a mustache and combe the nasal hair into the tache that way you can trim the nasal hair at same time as your tache, simples

Cheeky bugger.
Says the tipper driver in primark t shirt and peacocks shorts.
I have always worn shorts in my driving career in the summer, from the George Michael tiny ’ Club Tropicana’style, circa 1986…, (where I looked particular stunning btw) to the above the knee football style in the 90s, to the over the knee denim ones I wear today.
Being a Trucking fashion icon, it goes with the territory
Never been asked not to wear them, I would be a bit ■■■■■■ off if I was, maybe still wear them and carry a pair of long trousers to keep up appearances when needed.
No intention of sweating my knackers off for any pretentious twit in a transport office.

Went for interview this morning… me in smart A&F shirt… 501 levis… (with work clothes in car )
Interviewed by TM in shorts and T shirt
Company policy for me is no shorts at ANY customer premises! Shorts OK in own yard and driving but trousers (black) at any delivery or collection point!
Bit of a ball ache sometimes having to change but there could be a 5 - 6 hour gap so really once a day is not that bad
Gaffer pays me to work to his ethics, so that’s what I do, no real hardship.

Pretty much this!
