Archie …did you ever frequent the “Oxford Galleries” while you were ■■■■■■■ at the Quay ■■? I did !!!

No I never did go to the Oxford Galleries, although a few of the other lads did. But as Larry knows I used to catch the Bus from the Haymarket out to Hazelrigg Road End, then walk into the village to the Club. That was a really fabulous night out, and although I was not there on a regular basis, I was treated just as if I was a regular. I met some really good blokes in there, miners a lot of them. I also met some, well a couple of brilliant lasses too. One who used to live in Byker especially. The Bus Ride back to Town and the Spread afterwards was Magic.

I and a couple of workmates used to overnight in Gateshead, in digs near to the British Legion cub, where we were welcomed due to our membership of our local branch. I can’t remember if it was Tuesday or Thursday, but one of them was Ladies Night with a whole load of quite young fillies out for a bit of fun. Happy days!

A very wise choice my man, Ha Ha, Regards Larry.

I took these shots from Mill Dam this evening, the shots aren’t that good but, the ship is (I think) the one that has been detained under arrest at the mouth of the river for many months now. It has been freed after fines were paid and safety issues remedied. I was suprised to see a ship this size needing tugs to guide her out. I wonder if she is without engine power? This could be the reason for the tugs. Also, I don’t know if we still have tugs based on the river? someone will tell us I’m sure.  Regards Kev.

The tugs are probably taking it down to the Testing Station to have the prohibition lifted.

Hi the tugs on the tyne are based on windmill way down passed tradeteam’s yard southside of the river, think there are 4 tug’s based there I go into alexander blasting which is next to a@p yard all the time. cheer’s bob

Thanks Bob, I knew someone would have the info on the tugs. I pass by there regularly on the main road but obviously the tugs can’t be seen unless you get nearer the river. Regards Kev.

In the 60/70’s we used to supply a Miss Angus with coal at her house at the top of Hole Lane in Sunniside. I think she was one of the last of the Angus family. Canny old lass, never married or had family and was more interested in her horses than anything else. Who ever delivered always got a quid and a cup of tea !!

Nice photo, I used to sub from them, One job I remember was taking offal to the Kennomeat Dog food factory, I got a shock when I went onto their weighbridge I grossed off at 37 tonnes on a 32 tonner, The trailer & unit tared off at 17 tonnes empty, The fellow in the weighbridge at Barrhead just smiled & said it happened all the time, One of the better jobs was on local running into Smart & Browns at Spennymoor then up to Hounsgill platemill for a load back to Northshields, IIRC Jackson Armstrong was the gaffer in those days & Ronnie Boyd was their shunter, Also Colin Davison was in the traffic office, & Billy Burns was their fitter along with Colin Robson, Happy long gone days, Regards Larry.
