See this sentence so much on here,is there really people that are happy to pay 1000s to get a HGV licence and earn crap pay as long as you have a newish vehicle■■?
In the same vein, I often wonder about the ones who lavish hard work and money on someone else’s truck, polishing it to high heaven and fitting extras at their own cost, but drive round in a tatty old nail when not at work??
I enquired at one local haulier last year, that was paying just £7.20 hour for rigids and £8.00 hour for artics, on multi drop steel deliveries. Needless to say I walked away from that one - nice trucks or not.
That’s why he’s got nice trucks. Poverty wages to his drivers.

and his and her Aston martins up the drive and 5 X 2 week holidays whilst you’re slaving away for NMW!
Its all about doing what makes you happy in life. If getting to drive a new top of the range, all singing all dancing truck for crap wages makes you happy, then knock yourself out I say. No point driving an old banger for decent money if it makes you unhappy in life. You’re a long time dead remember.[emoji6]
Live and let live and all that.
when I started I was like that, then reality set in after 5 yrs ,now I drive whatever is given to me as long as its legal but it has to be worth it moneywise

Nail on the head damoq,if a fella wants to bling his truck go for it i say,the roads would be boring with all plain white low cab axors ,just dont paint the tyre lettering ffs

Why do these threads always go the same way. So what if a driver wants to spend THEIR money on a lorry. It’s a hobby, I think people who spend thousands on fishing gear to sit by a river are mental, but each to their own. Don’t even start me on spending money on ■■■■ and booze. Everyone is different, don’t judge, just get on with it
I think the problem they have is that, you can spend a fortune on fishing gear, or ■■■■, or booze or even bicycles, but at the end of the day its yours to keep, not so with anything you stick on someone else’s vehicle.
Personally I couldn’t give one what anyone has on a vehicle,or if they have a nameplate or if they choose to drive wearing hi viz, or any other type of clothing. I’m always amazed how it gets some peoples back up.
Having just come back into the game after many years away from it, why is wearing a hi viz in the cab whilst driving a no no? What’s the point in taking it off if you have to put it back on a little later? They are light and easy to wear, so why the problem?
There’s a difference between working for crap wages where the boss kits the motor out, and spending your wages on a company motor. I’ve only ever worked for 2 firms that run what some of you would call blinged up shiney motors. And they were 2 of the best paid jobs I’ve ever had. Apart from the firms I call 3rd tier transport, usually 8-10 year old fleet spec unit, drivers in Lonsdale uniform, there aren’t any bad paying jobs in the area. Maybe I’m lucky, but I wouldn’t ever work for less than £550 in the bank, wether the lorry is covered in stuff or not
The boss where me and Steve66 worked really didn’t like the fact that when he announced they were buying brand new 8wheelers, we said we’d rather keep our secondhand 06 reg Scanias (basic P cabs) and have a pay rise instead.
The glory boys who liked to hang out his arse like stubborn turds were all excited like cheerleaders however.
mac12:
Bit like the ones who give up there holidays for a light bar that still belongs to the company and not them
You what?
Oh yes, have a read on “have bentons gone plain white” !
I’ve heard of this, my mate went for an interview there and they said to him “we like to have a smart fleet of trucks, so if there is anything you’d like for your truck just let us know and we’ll order it”
Great he thought…
Then they said “if you want to your can pay for it with your holiday pay”

Nothing changed over the years,it was a common practice to give a guy a flash F88 so he would run all hours god sends for peanuts,
It was common to see a new Volvo /Scania when they first appeared over here, with a bucket attached somewhere so the driver could clean, in his own time, his new motor whilst sitting in a lorry park somewhere on a n/o, known as the ten bob and a bucket brigade.
I remember a big company years back in Felixstowe offering a new Scania and £28 a week,it got turned down as I was on £42 for driving an old Guy

I get ■■■■ for the old lady up the road ,200 black super kings a time ,£93 ,often get her 2/3 bottles of sherry as well ,and pensioners are meant to be hard up .

How do you work that one out it’s the same, instead of crap take home pay, you are getting your good take home pay and spending it on upgrading your boss’s motor, so you end up with the same bottom line. Why do you think they ‘allow’ you to do it after they buy a standard motor… because you do it willingly, so he needn’t buy all the crap himself .and he spends what he has saved on a holiday with his family.
What I’m driving at, is it’s what you spend your money on, I don’t drink, smoke or go fishing, so I only spend what would be available for other interests. Plus I don’t spend massive amounts every week. It will work out to less than a tenner a week

Why use smoking and drinking the lowest common denominator.
A 10er a week would help towards family hol, Christmas, kids, pension etc etc etc. You don’t pay for tyres and fuel, so why pay for other stuff that is equall y your boss’s responsibility regardless of whatever your wage is. Each to his own misguided way of doing things, but I will never get it.

As you say mate, it’s your money, do as you like with it.

its only a no no for regular drivers, compulsory for agency.

As I see it, it’s a bit like spending money to decorate a council house. Even though it’s not yours, you still want it to look nice. I’ll not, however, get into defining what “looks nice!”
Slightly off topic but the best lorry driving job I’ve had wasn’t great pay but I loved it. No chasing around start about 5 am and finished by 1pm decent people to work for etc.
I still lived at my mums when I started and was ok but when I got my own place I needed more money so went elsewhere.
Still in contact with them and may possibly return shortly if a few things pan out outside of work
