Has Britain really had a functioning class system at any time in history, or is it just a clichéed myth, which has become accepted through repetition? Is it really any different in GB to other notable countries/cultures? If it is, how did the situation start and become entrenched? How has it affected Britain’s industry?
As a member of the upper caste I really have little interest in Britain’s history.
I am lower class. I am that low, I can crawl under a snakes belly.
I know my place.
Im working class but dont work.
My wife says I am not wired up properly and my daughter says everybody is posher than me so I guess that makes either a politician or a nobleman but being as I seem to upset most people that makes the political angle a no go so I must be a nobleman
cheers Johnnie
Most countries do have some kind of class system where some people feel they are better then others, be it money or belonging to he some sort of privilege family. Britain has always been good a exclusion but India takes it to far higher level.
In Britain it would have originally been based of old houses and being related to the in bread monarchy that we all had the misfortune to have lived under. Ancestors, and hand me downs, being related to monarchy was being related to god, after all the old kings and queens actually chosen by god, and the church backed them up on that all the way so it must be true.
If I have more money than you, then I could pay you to do things for me, so therefore I must be better than you. I can also afford better things than you, so again that makes me better, so I must be in a higher class.
In America, which is meant to be a classless society, it’s based on old family, or even better, the new god of vast amounts of money. If you can trace your ancestors back to the founding fathers then your in. You can achieve class by attending or sending your kids to one of the top schools, Harvard, Princeton, etc, any old school in the Boston area. Any of the above would earn you the right in your own mind to lord it over other people.
Australia is another classless society, where people have the idea that being related to a first fleeter ( the convicts that came out on the first fleet) give them the right to say they’re better then someone that arrived as 10 pound pom in the 60’ and 70’s. Living a certain suburbs or post code will give you higher status over bogans that live in less effluent areas. And if you drive a posh car that helps as well.
If you believe in The White Australia Policy ( and unfortunately there are still some that do ) then you have higher status than Native Aborigionals ( even though they established their colonies about 40,000 years ago ), southern and middle European, Maltese, Lebanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, or any one that ever showed up and wasn’t you.
South Africa much the same as Australia.
India, that’s just right stuffed up, if your born into a class ( cast ) then you are that class for the rest of your life and there are billions of them all believing the same thing so it’s not going to change for a long time.
If your a mate and a top bloke then that’s what you are, if your from the Wayne Kerr side of the fence and can’t or don’t want to see the light then stay there.
Jeff…

Lorries serve industry, industry serves society. The nature of society is the basis of the standard of that society’s work, which is the stuff that goes on the back of the lorries. Besides, we might as well keep all the BS in one place. Surprised he hasn’t made a contribution, so far.
we are all equal.
Yeah, right. But some are more equal than others.

Looks like he’s slunk off back into the shadows, after making a bigger-than-usual twit of himself on the Nationalisation thread.
It’s not the class system I hate. It’s “The Establishment” that gets my back up. From school-teachers to lawyers to doctors; gentleman farmers, police, estate agents and all politicians. People like the Freemasons who break the spirit of anybody who wants to get ahead; starting at school where bright kids from the common people are ridiculed and driven down.
First against the wall; come the revolution!

Come off it, Chris, we’ve had most of the country’s haulage fleet painted red once before and it didn’t work. Just ask Bewick who paid for it all.
Having said that, come the revolution, brother, & I’ll be right behind you!

Vote for Dennis Skinner, the only politician still breathing that cares about the working class.
Cheers Dave.
Who says there’s no class system in road transport.
Fuel tanker drivers always considered themselves the elite as do mobile car park drivers, there’s trunkers and trampers, and tipper drivers gets blamed for everything and lets not mention box jockeys. At night there’s the pallet flyers and Post Office suicide pilots and that’s before I’ve even mentioned the poor ol 7’5tonne drivers.
There’s national combines, private companies and family firms as well as one man bands…
Class is what you make it
