thats a beut there kv! exceelent job, the paint looks very good on the photo! and i’d keep that barbeque well away from it!
My hands have got too close to the BBQ on quite a few occasions Mal - I had no hairs on the back of my hands and my arms for a few weeks afterwards…
We generally have a good burn-up each rally we go to. Theres a fantastic butcher in Southport called Gaham Eyes who makes BBQ packs as well as skewered meats, sausages of every flavour imaginable, burgers of various types, etc…
We use up plenty of meat and a bucket full (or two) of bottled Stella on a Saturday night - it’s a good way to end the day.
If we get down to Gaydon in June, come and see us - I’ll do a burger for you.
And the beer usually starts flowing as soon as the engines are turned off when we arrive
you can bet on it marky, it d be great to meet you all, and have a good look round those motors! hope youll all be down gaydon!

I don’t think that you were there, but we did have a BBQ incident at Harrogate in 1999 - did you hear about that??

I’m expecting my lorry to be there but, sadly, I shan’t be able to go this year

You’re right - I wasn’t there in 99, as I was on holiday, but the famous setting-fire to the park bin has now got it’s own special place in history…

Glad to hear it’s famous!!

Glad to hear it’s famous!!
The BBQ incident will go down in history along with the smell of curry at the end of the Pennine on the year that the Stray was waterlogged and we had to use a college car park!
Only just started to read this post this morning but once i started i read it from start to finish…
.
Now then a question for all you atki fans is,do any of you remember Barratts they were based in Greenfield Lancashire and ran quite a large fleet of Atkis…green in colour with gold writing i think.
I used to do a paper round when i was about 9 years old and at about 6 in the morning on my way to the paper shop you could see clouds of smoke filling the air and smell the diesel fumes as the drivers would be starting the wagons up…something i’ll never forget
That would have been late seventies early eightis. Also if any of you have any pics of their trucks i’d love to see them.
Keep posting and thanks to all for such great pictures

Yes Barratts were, and still are, well known, and now operate, I think, from Oldham.
In particular, they operated a Viewline like the one featured in this post. This was very rare in itself, but made unique by their mods to it. It survives in preservation, but not in Barratts colours.
They also ran a bow-front, Chinese 6 Atkinson, HDJ 161, into the 1980s. As far as I am aware, they still own it. I last saw it in dry storage at their old depot c.1986.
I do have a few Barratt’s pics, but not yet scanned.

ah thats a shame 240, it’d have been nice to meet you m8, but i’d still be glad to see the motor though, so i hope at least one of you (and me come to that) will be there!
good to see you enjoyed the thread scan, ive nominated it for the best thread of the year! i remember seeing barrats green painted motors knocking about all over the place and i seem to remember seeing one pulling a tank. thanks for reminding me, id forgot all about them! were they from delph?
They were at Delph, but are now operating out of Richardson’s yard in (& don’t laugh) Wellyhole Street, Oldham.
I don’t know if they were originally from Delph Mal but i do know the time i speak of they were in Greenfield (only about two miles from Delph) as thats were i used to live as a kid.
I moved to Anglesey in '86 and seem to remember them still there…but not to sure
it was reading this post that brought it all back…Hope you do have some pics mate, lookin forward to seeing them

ive nominated it for the best thread of the year!
I noticed you had done that Mal - Cheers! Pity more people didn’t vote for it though.
I’ve just had a look back at the first post as I couldn’t even remember what started the thread off!
how manys the time i wished id took more photos! i do now, but lost 23 years really of opportunity to take pics, even of old locations thatve gone now as well!
Here we are - this is one of 240’s pictures that he thought he hadn’t scanned.
I’ll leave the description to him.
