The Big A (A proper wagon!)

It was just the same when he put my winscreens back in. I’d never seen one fitted in such a violent manner until then :open_mouth:

The use of safety boots as a technique to install glass was a surprise to me as well initially - I’ve never seen one break yet, but it got close on a couple of occasions…

No Marky, I aint heard, it’s all news to me! Im not very knowledgeable about them, or the scene. I really know nowt apart from I did the job for a while in a few of them many years ago, but as a motor, theyve allways flicked my switch!

Mal - check your PMs mate.

You summed it up perfectly for me too Mal. I have neither the time, the money, the expertise, the patience, or the proximity to take anything other than a voyeurs interest in all these motors, all of which I driven at some time or another, and some of them for many miles.

Salut, David.

If we win the lottry, Im certain there will be a small fleet of stuff that would very rapidly accumulate on the farm we would buy David, and, I would have the time to mess about, but Im like you otherwise, I would have to ship the relevant bodies in to do expert jobs, needing readies of course! Then I could have the fun of driving them to shows! Other tahn that, it’ll be a old motorbike at best as Im skint, and have nowhere to park even a car let alone a lorry!

Cheers Marky! :sunglasses:

marky:
Mal, you mean you’ve never heard of the East Lancashire Big A Team? I am amazed…

34 is owned by three people, one of whom is 240.

You should’ve been in the shed when we were putting 34 back together last March - you’d have heard some noises, I can guarantee that!!

Although I’ve rather faded out of it, living in Berkshire and working in Southampton. I’ve still got the Rear Steer 6x2 Atki, but that’s roosting undercover in Shropshire at the moment, so I don’t get to play out much!

killsville:

240 Gardner:
So did my test trailer slow your Atki down a bit then??

Just a bit! I only overtook one vehicle between Knutsford and Charnock - an old Scammell Explorer doing about 15mph!

Not as lively as Ethel then!!

I look upon it more as keeping a watchful eye on proceedings from a distance…

You’ll never lose your membership, have no fear on that score…

And there is also membership of the Northern Big A Group! (The alternative to the official Atkinson Club!)

You’re going to buy me a farm  :open_mouth:  ,

aw mate, you didn’t have to do that :unamused: .

But wouldn’t it be a bit far to come to set out over the Pennines  ?

Salut, David.

No-one’s talked about Atkis for a while… time to put that right!!

Paul took JRN for test this morning and, sad to report, came away with a fail :frowning:

However, it wasn’t too miserable: the only fail point was excessive wear in the shackle pins & bushes on the second steer. They were down as advisories last year, so I can’t complain.

It wouldn’t build up air for him yesterday, and he couldn’t work out why and couldn’t hear any leaks for the noise of the engine! It was only after running a long line from a noisy compressor that he managed to get the compressor far enough away to hear that it had blown a diaphragm on the second steer, so he was down at the factors at 0800 today, and had a new one fitted in time for his morning’s test - what a hero!

Anyway, he’s aiming to sort out the fail point and gave it back within 14 days for a cheaper re-test… fingers crossed!

Don’t let him stop there - get that plan for the stainless tubing into action!!

Now you’ve confused me 240, I remember the Foden twin-load, a rigid 8 with space at the end of the chassis for a 5th wheel on which was coupled a short semi, but an Atki?

From hankstruckpictures.com/marti … _droms.htm

Thanks for that Dave, I had forgotten that query of mine. But now you picture them I do remember the ICI tankers. I suppose the advantage was on really tight deliveries they could just use the tractor as a short rigid. Presumably they could transfer the product from trailer tanks to unit also if necessary.

Salut, David.

Amazing how many photos have been taken of the only two Atkis of their ilk!

Of course, they are different again from the Lathams rigids that sparked off the thread all that time ago. They were Atkinson “Raider” rigids, with a 5th wheel coupling mounted at the rear of the chassis, and underneath the deck, and to which was hitched a close coupled tandem axle trailer very like the modern close coupled drawbar trailers.

im going to bump this thread

a, because i can,
and
b, to asks, is that huddlestone firm still running any atki’s and are there any new/not previously posted pics of them!

Yes - John Huddlestone still runs a 1973 Borderer with a Riding sleeper cab.

Strangely it only has a Gardner 180 in it, which is a bit of a step back from the ex-Den’s Transport & North West Freighters 6x2 Borderer that had a 320 ■■■■■■■ in it.

That one has now been sold and is being renovated by it’s new owner. John also had a 1958 Mk1 Silver Knight for sale (150 Gardner) which came complete with pole trailer. I gave it a minute’s thought because it can be driven on a car licence (registered before 01/01/1959) but was put off by the asking price and I don’t have anywhere to keep it.

John also has a Japanese 4x4 (maybe an early Toyota Landcruiser?) that has a Gardner diesel engine under the bonnet. Someone will be able to confirm the model, but I’m fairly sure it’s a 4LK.

I think it was either an early Landcruiser or possibly a Nissan patrol. I am almost certain it was a 4LK under the bonnet - I don’t think anything bigger would fit!

Thanks Mal. This post is back at the top of the list where it belongs!

Will have a look for more Huddy pictures, but in the meantime look at these two pictures. Hard to believe they are the same wagon!

PS. Notice Marky’s BBQ smoking away in the background!

cheers marky, im sad to hear he aint running that one with the big ■■■■■■■ in any more, but glad there is at least one working! i suppose that these things have to end eventually.

a gardner in a jap 4x4 thats great!
