The best automatic truck gearbox?

Which is the best automatic truck gearbox that u’ve driven…

Saturday i had an MAN TGA 460…it was terrible…it would pick up…then slow down for ages…whilst it thought about changing gear…a pain when considering which was the best time to go at roundabouts…and the manual operation…was just as ■■■■■■

On the other hand…had a DAF CF 430…on monday…that was well sweet…it got on with the job…at bit slow at times…but much better than the MAN…and the little gear stick handle was well nice…for manual…gears…the best part being the easy and instant response of choosing between manual and auto■■?

Haven’t tried any others so update us…■■?

worst one for me was the reno prem slow on reactions round about,s was the worst as u said

 I-shift the best, Strallis not too bad. Kactros 1 is painful. Not had a try in a DAF auto so far. And haven’t tried an MAN auto yet either amd I’m glad about that too, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was bad. :unamused:

strallis in semi spot on, auto oh dear.

A stralis that has been “trained” in auto is perfect .
MAN is a total disaster and you are right they do have hissy fits at roundabouts and fail to hold the right gear .

I shift is by far the best , always has the right gear at any given moment , never had a problem .

I still prefer manual though . But by september we will have no manual trucks at all .

We have some trucks with the Eaton 10 speed which is now in it’s 3rd generation.Does everything right once trained.I tend to to use the manual overide when pulling a hill though.Apart from that it’s awesome.

My mate has a ZF/meritor clutchless 12 speed in his Volvo. He claims it’s a struggle to get rolling with a load on and shifts too slowly when it is going, though I don’t think he read thye manual :unamused:

What the hell is an…I-shift gear box■■?

Intelligent shift gearbox . The gearbox knows what gear is needed no matter what the weight or gradient of hill or straight flat road . It will either block change or shift one at a time depending on the driving situation you are in , it shifts straight away with no fuss and always has the right gear .

volvo renault both good

daf astronic is best closely followed by the i shift on the volvo. stralis is good but the worst has to be the renault.

I prefered the Volvo I-Shift, never had a problem with that - the Stralis seemed a bit flakey, the Renault I drove was actually better.

G

Stralis. Spot on- hills, roundabouts, city traffic… Good for work but let down by the cab layout… ( Sleep in hotels…)

Ovlov autos are terrible. THe ones I’ve driven seem to think it’s economical to drive in a 30 limit in 12th gear @ 700RPM. I know it’s damned near impossible to stick to 30MPH so I engage manual select for anything below 40MPH. Also when going round a roundabout when I lift off slightly, it seems to see that as a cue to change up so you end up lugging it out of the roundabout. And why do I have to manually select “Power” mode when I’m climbing a steep hill? And why is there no kickdown?

BWHAHAHA…perhaps you should come and tell Arla’s fleet that.

Well speaking as a luddite who thinks technology is the devils work. I rated the Stralis autobox.

By far the best auto gearbox has to be Volvo I-Shift though.

Mine can cope with 29 tonne of glucose going in one direction and me and the truck going in another :stuck_out_tongue: It has never missed a gear or got the wrong one, and is quick enough to keep up with the swill.

Driving a tank also makes you appreciate the finer qualities of an Eaton twin splitter

The DAF AS Tronic is the same ZF unit found in MANs and Ivecos I believe. The manufacturers use their own software to personalise it to their own application.

I don’t like the AS Tronic in the DAF 85s - reversing is scary.

I think the best has to be Volvo I-Shift -without a doubt. Very smooth, and also predictable when you’ve used it for a while.

They really ‘got it right’. Nuff sed.

My only gripe with it is that on hills IME it didn’t block change, instead changing through every split instead of full gear changes.

That.s why it has a manual button, it might be intelligent but its eyesight is poor

im driving an FH Globby with I-Shift and i love it,especially when ive got london, but my only gripe with it , is when im coupling up,it might just be me,but when im goin for the pin and trying to go nice and steady, the weight seems to stop the unit so you give it a very slight amount of gas and it rockets off hitting the pin at 1000 MPH and giving me whiplash, other than that,i never want a manual ever again

Never had that problem, I think its the most controllable clutch ever, do you use the air suspension to couple or rely on the run up ramps?
