The 1st truck you drove

My first real haulage motor. After ten years of driving Ford Cantgo and Leyland Frightners, I got this baby inn2003. I was now a real driver.

Anyway, I passed the C+E and got to practise on this at Farm Foods Warrington on the sloping bays.

I passed my test in 1991 in one of these…

I remember the reverse was a pig to get in, because the tractor had been converted to RHdrive straight from the LHdrive model with a linkage that made it rather awkward on the gear lever…

I couldn’t find a pic of the old “Chieftan” tractor unit I did my RM “changeover” in. Had a crash box, 70’s style beigy-crappy coloured velvety seats, and you needed arms like popeye to drive it, because it had a large steering wheel and no power steering. :frowning:

Once passed, RM were using Leyland Roadtrains at the time, so I found my first actual duties driving them about, with their steaming down hills (no limiters in those days) paper tachos, crunchy-clangy gears (considering it was supposed to be “Synchromesh”) and of course the lack of fuel economy compared to other tractors of the era…

Perhaps you’ll all understand now when I say on here "I quite like the Axors, they are a good workhorse, and comfortable to drive" while you lot argue that I should be throwing bricks at it, and ‘looking for some matches’… :sunglasses:

My first run in the roadtrain - double-axel 40’ RM trailer was to Patchway Bristol SWDC (since moved to Severn Beach) I think the “old” SWDC is now the Concord Road Citylink depot…
This was my first “reverse onto a bay” as a pro driver, since oddly enough, I didn’t get to do that on any of my original HGV training, the test, or the chieftan changeover…

Moved to Roadways Container Logistics, Trafford Park and had this narrow cab MAN for five months. Coupled to a little 23 foot trailer. Great fun to practise reversing as they go where all over the place!

My first truck (or one very similar)

First load was 20 ton plasterboard to Threadneedle Street, right next door to old Stock Exchange.
No power steering and air operated wipers so as I struggled to reverse into site in torrential rain, air dropped, brakes locked, wipers stopped over and over again. Took me 45 minutes and brought half the city to a standstill, worst day of my life.

My first with air brakes was an R reg D series Ford, first lorry an M reg Leyland Clydesdale skip wagon and my first artic was a daycab 2800 Daf on a T plate. My first sleeper cab was a W reg Sudden Accident 400 with a 290 ■■■■■■■■ first brand new lorry was a 95-310 Daf on an E plate.

First truck I drove was a Leyland Roadrunner, for a Travis Perkins branch, in 2000 or so. Had four gears and would do a maximum of 50mph unless it was down a hill. Back then there were still a lot of old dogs on the roads in London – I also drove an old-style Ford Cargo for another TP branch, in Putney. That was hideous – nasty stiff gearbox. (Iveco Cargos weren’t much better in that regard.)

I can’t actually remember what my first class 2 truck was. I had a lot more “no experience” knock-backs after class 2 than after class 1. My first class 1 (apart from what I passed on) was a Volvo FM 2014 tractor unit with a one-axle flatbed trailer, for a scaffolding company.

The first truck I was paid to drive was one the old 3 wheel Scammell Scarabs.
