The 1st truck you drove

The first I drove after passing my test was a 12t DAF LF in the morning and first artic was a Renault Premium artic in the afternoon - full load of magazines for Portsmouth.

A 7.5 canter I had to start somewhere

Same here. It’s a 3.5t chassis with a smart car bolted to the front that somehow has a mgw of 7.5t. They sent me to London in it to “see if you can hack it”

Thames Trader,TK,KM then BMC/Leyland Mastiff artic

My first drive in a truck was in September 1976.

Sudden Accident 401, FEC 747T. The only decent feature was a door to get out of it.

This really made me laugh    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

My first truck I legally drove on the road was an F88 recovery truck, the brakes were crap compared to the Renault G260 I took my test in :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Haha thanks Phil, funny how you remember the Registrations of the trucks that count.

No matter how bloody awful they were…

W

First truck and first night out in a 30ft 7.5t cargo with sleeper pod…took class 1 then upgraded to my first artic job on general haulage in a fl10…oh what a eye opener that was and I loved it, London nearly every day with the odd Cornwall thrown in…handballing onto the trailer and the bosses favourite saying " we can’t have fresh air going up the road"

TK, 4-cyl dropside, 7.5t. The gear lever broke off in my hand, the vibrations loosened all my fillings.

1974 Ford D series. 70 hp engine after most of the horses had escaped!

I remember driving in Lincolnshire during a gale and only managing to get 20mph out of the bloody thing.

This, taken from the Old Berkshire Compnies thread was identical to what I started on in the mid 80s when I passed my car test in 83… What a heap! Some had power steering, but I wasn’t lucky enough to have one in the beginning!

1982 Leyland Terrier. Vile!

Hit a hill or a headwind, and 35 mph!

Truly awful.

I see by the posts a lot of people went out with their dads as kids, pity employers won’t let you do that because of all the health and safety or ‘insurance doesn’t cover’ ■■■■■■■■. Not many of us young people getting into trucking these days.

I would suggest that most people I know are in transport due to summer holidays spent in a cab with their dad.
I could reverse a TK (well I steered he did the pedals) at about 10.
I also got to tip it and I remeber when I was about 15 him jumping out saying I’ll watch you back so I did it all by myself.

Like many others it was the familier route of Her Majesty’s Bedfords (TK, MK, MJ & TM) then onwards from there.

It makes you appreciate air seats and suspension doesn’t it lol I regularly would come home with lumps on the top off my head and I’m only 5"9 any taller then you’ve sh#t it! Good little engines in them though pitty about the breaks they’re shocking made me learn to read the road better though.
