Looks like we’ve kicked a new thread off and I’m the "mug"could turn out to be a better one than the “dead and buried” Guy Big J 8LXB thread!! DARK BLUE SIX WHEELER TRADER DROPSIDES FROM SWADLINCOTE ( DERBYSHIRE) ? Come on lads tell me I’m not immagining things!! I wasn’t ■■■■■■ as I was only about 13 and didn’t start going into the Victoria Tavern until I was 14!!! Dennis.

Sorry Dennis didn’t realise you were on about the parrot nosed Traders :exclamation:
Cheers Dave.

Your either “miles ahead” with your wit Dave or you are on a different “wave length” !! I wasn’t aware that Fords produced a Parrot Nosed cab? This calls for another large one to enable one to catch up what!! Cheers Dennis.

These were the same cab as the Leyland Comet and the parrot nosed Dodge Dennis :exclamation: :exclamation:
Cheers Dave.

Quite correct Dave, they were manufactured by Briggs of Willenhall IIRC The Dodges had the Parrot nose bonnets and didn’t the Leyland Comet have that shaped bonnet? But not the Ford ! Cheers Dennis.

Briggs cabs on Leyland Comet, "parrot nose Dodge and Thames ET6 or Motor Panels cabs on a multitude of chassis .

Any one got any photo’s of Walker Bros Darlington, they had a fleet of Traders around the end of the 60s?Vic.

Well I remember a firm at Harrogate Hill Darlington have a six wheel Trader , Frank Burrell , was his name if my memmory is correct, his yard was on the left hand side on the old A1, heading south past the White Wooden Cafe , The Brookland Im sure it was called, he had more than one as far as I can remember, Regards Larry.50/60s.Era.

Larry,i think your right again, but i think the cafe was called the Brooklin cafe just before Ketton garage.Vic. PS do you remember Cambell Dawsons filling station at Newton Willows just before Barton on the old A1?

Aye your right it was the Broolin run by some quite nice old ladies, the first time I was in there was 1956, toasted tea cakes very nice, Regards Larry

I remember a filling st. at Newton Morrel, I thought it was owned by Seppy Cook who had a few wagons ? the old memmory is faiding a bit , so help me out here, Regards Larry.

As far as i know it was owned by Cambell Dawson,Seppy Cook had a yard in Middleton St George and Peter Stiller bought him out in the 60s.Vic. P.S.I think the son still owns the filling st,his name is Cambell aswell its a bit run down now ,i think he mainly stores caravans now.heres a photo of an old seppy motor.

Wraggs were still operating in Sheffield recently, they were taken over by Dyson Refactories in 1969 and now are part of the Steetley Group. I have heard though that they may now have folded, not heard of them in Swad Dennis, which incidently is in Derbyshire and NOT Staffs though it may have been when you were a lad!

Pete.

I have no chance then if you lads can’t solve the question!! I always thought Swad was in Staffs! anyhow how close is it to the border with Staffs? However,I’m sticking to my guns about the 6 wheeled Traders I used to see passing through Kendal, both ways but I especially remember their loads running southbound, looked like broken tiles and rubble so it must have had some value! There must be somebody that comes on the site from round Swad that can answer the query!! Cheers Dennis.PS D & D Transport from Dundee also ran 6 wheeler Traders!!

Wraggs ran bricks to Scottish steelworks and backloaded brokken biscuits from McVities, that’s what you saw on their wagons Dennis.Probably topped up with Quiggins mint cake out of Kendal.
Just a thought…anon. :stuck_out_tongue:

It runs in my mind a firm started up 1972ish. called S.& M.C.Transport Willow Bridge Garage was that connected with the Cooks Haulge ?

Larry, you could be right again, after he sold out to Stiller he opened a clearing house in M/bro under the name of S&MC,but i don’t remember the lorries at Willow Bridge but by then the motorway would be open and Cambell would need the extra rent as he tried a few ways of getting cash in

If there was no broken biscuits at Carrs or Mintcake bits in Kendal they loaded Jam butties at the mine in Whassett just along from our depot in Milnthorpe! Cheers Dennis.

A few more of Edmundson’s Thames Traders can be seen in the Edmundson of Preston gallery on the Northwest Trucks web site
Regards Paul

Smiles used to run a lot of Traders, This one worked out a Limer & Trinadad Tar plant at Forcett,East Layton off the A66 the drivers used to stay at the Tudor Cafe all week , the50/60s Era.

Wm Rowe & Sons Thames Trader cattle truck that ran out of the handsacre depot Rugeley on the M6 in Cheshire after a major accident in the 1960’s

I don’t think Robsons ran any Trader 6 wheelers, well maybe one or two of their “subbies” did however RBT were big users of Trader 4 wheelers and they ran a number of Trader tractor units.I think Stan had fairly strong views about vehicle specs and didn’t believe in asking “a donkey” to do a horses job!! I think Robsons ran a few Albion Rievers but ,of course, they were manufactured as 6 wheelers and not 4 wheelers “butchered” by the third axle conversion firms!! Cheers Dennis.
