THAMES TRADERS

Bewick:
While on all things Trader, does anyone re-call a firm called Thos.Wragg Refactories of Swadlincote? they ran dropside 6 wheeler Traders and ran up and down to Scotland.I can remember them running south through Kendal loaded with what looked like broken bricks/tiles.I often wondered what they made and used the rubble for they hauled south!! Cheers Bewick.

Howay Dennis, theres been a lot of rubbish hauled about but you are can’t expect an answer on this one Vic.

Hiya Chris,I was begining to think it was my immagination until you came to the rescue!! They were defo 6 wheeler dark blue Traders and were from Swadlincote Staffs. As a lad I always thought it was a funny name “Swadlincote”.They may well have had a site in Sheffield. On a geographical note,if they were running to Sheffield would they have come down the A6 and through Manchester or gone over the A66 and down’t A1??Cheers Dennis.

I always used A1/A66 Dennis going north. Odd times I’ve used M6/M61,through Manchester and over Woodhead coming south after a Carlisle /Lockerbie changeover just for a change in the 80s.In earlier days Sheffielders would have used A1/A66 both ways although in the late 60s I recall some trying Woodhead/Manchester/East Lancs to Haydock and then M6 but I can’t remember how much of t’M6 was open further north.
I can’t remember what livery Wraggs from Sheffield ran in,maybe Sammieoposite Johnnie can remember as he’s a lot older than me.   anon

Wraggs were still operating in Sheffield recently, they were taken over by Dyson Refactories in 1969 and now are part of the Steetley Group. I have heard though that they may now have folded, not heard of them in Swad Dennis, which incidently is in Derbyshire and NOT Staffs though it may have been when you were a lad!

Pete.

I’d forgotten they’d been taken over by Dysons Pete and I meant to remind Dennis that Swadlincote was in Derbys and not Staffs, proper “eyup me duck” country, boxer Jack Bodell was a native of Swadlincote IIRC.
I think Wraggs wagons ran in a light blue livery, even after being taken over by Dysons whose motors were maroon in colour.

I have no chance then if you lads can’t solve the question!! I always thought Swad was in Staffs! anyhow how close is it to the border with Staffs? However,I’m sticking to my guns about the 6 wheeled Traders I used to see passing through Kendal, both ways but I especially remember their loads running southbound, looked like broken tiles and rubble so it must have had some value! There must be somebody that comes on the site from round Swad that can answer the query!! Cheers Dennis.PS D & D Transport from Dundee also ran 6 wheeler Traders!!

Roberts Tranport from Knighton Radnorshire ran a lot of Thames Trades including a couple of six wheeled Traders, which were also blue.
Cheers Dave.

I think all the long wheelbase Traders were 3rd axle conversions by York,Primrose,Boyes and Carrimore ect. but the tipper versions were by Fords partner County and were double drives. Some tippers were converted by the likes of York,Primrose ect but were’nt much use for off road work. Cheers Dennis.

Quite correct Dave, they were manufactured by Briggs of Willenhall IIRC The Dodges had the Parrot nose bonnets and didn’t the Leyland Comet have that shaped bonnet? But not the Ford ! Cheers Dennis.
