Tesco trailers scrapped

Today I made a collection of shredded scrap metal out of EMR Bootle, as I was waiting to get loaded (5 flamin’ hours!) I saw a twin axle, rear steer Tesco box trailer being weighed in, it was being pulled by a plain white tractor unit. The trailer looked in good shape, maybe 10 years old max and had a tail lift. The trailer was dropped in the yard and later presumably pulled to bits by the mechanical grabs. In the corner of the yard I saw a load of ex-Tesco trailer chassis, all smashed up in a big pile.

I just can’t understand why Tesco would scrap trailers like this? Surely they would have a value on the open market. The ones I saw looked to be short “urban” trailers, so maybe they have a limited market and couldn’t be used for general haulage. Maybe Tesco just don’t want them being sold on and used by a competitor?

The wheels and tyres were removed from the scrapped trailers but all other valuable parts like lights, axles and legs were left on and crushed.

It all seemed like a bit of a waste to me.

Because Tosco trailers are all shagged out…

Does seem a waste, whizzing light units and mud guards at least off wouldn’t take long.

Legs would take a bit longer, but are also worth a lot more.

Money in tat.

This is Tesco we are talking about here. In fact supermarkets in general. You should see the amount of perfectly good food that disappears into their skips everyday, it’s no wonder they aren’t interested in salvaging a few old truck parts.

This proves there making to much money

Well if it’s a box trailer it’ll have been a fridge, so limited use I’d have thought (as compared to say a curatinsider).

Tesco aren’t replacing their rear steers with new rear steers, just conventional running geared 10 metre trailers. Apparently the maintenance costs are too high on them.

From the state of the ones we used to have a Widnes, and the Curtainsider variants that I run into that are from Goole and Lichfield, there’s not much point in component recovery as they’re “shagged”.

They’re on double tyres, i.e. not super singles, so not sure what use the mudguards would be?

I’m no mechanic, but I can’t see that there’d be an amazing market for pretty knackered components? I’d say the scrap value probably outwieghs the re-sale and stripping the trailer costs?

It doesn’t go into skips anymore, it all gets bagged up, frozen and then put back onto the trailers that deliver the fresh food…

Probably an attempt to stamp out the lazy in-store activity I witnessed when doing my stint as a Tesco shop lackey. The damages used to be allowed to build up to the point where it was an epic job to sort out, so one evening the whole lot would miraculously disappear & the compactor skip suspiciously full. We are talking tins of soup with a dent in etc.

As far as I am aware, the in store bakeries still over-produce on purpose to keep the shelves full, then sling the lot at the close of play.

Tesco itself should be scrapped the piece of zb…:imp:

Waste like that really annoys me, but then I suppose it keeps the likes of us in a job…

There better off goin for scrap than stuck in a field with GOD LOVES YOU on the side

Girlfriend works for tesco at a tesco express every day they throw 4 bin bags of cakes away plus the fresh and sandwiches waste of food and money

If they give that sort of stuff away and someone gets I’ll then it’ll be Tesco who are liable, that’s the main reason it all gets chucked
