I can`t see ESL taking over at Fradley, there must be 60 Merc Axor units in Tesco livery at least, its a fair share of the work between Tesco / ESL / Agency Drivers, from what I can see.I know ESL have taken over the whole transport operation at Middlewich, but, that
s because the Tesco Drivers and their union have pushed Tesco too far this time, that
s the vibe I got, on a driver assessment a couple of weeks ago.Tesco @ Goole is also a 100% ESL Transport operation, I have been in there this week, and, the whole shebang was a pleasant experience…

ESL will be takin over the transport at middlewich on march 9th , so us Tesco drivers are being TUPEd over on that date, Your statement that "Tesco drivers and their union have pushed Tesco too far" is very wide of the mark . After the problems caused by the transfer of drivers to the new Livingstone dc , Middlewich dirvers were promised that Tesco had no plans to change anything at Middlewich, then only months later they hit us with this ESL takeover, The union even asked Tesco what they wanted to keep the work inhouse but they decided to go with ESL, Only one thing matters to Tesco and that certainly is not it
s loyal staff that got them to the No1 position in the first place!!!
The unions would not guarantee an increase in productivity, i.e. ; earn your money, which would then bring a parity with ESL drivers, i.e. 25% more work, which is / was achievable.
I`m only quoting what I was told by a Tesco assesser, who had knowledge of Middlewich and the way it was run on the transport side.
I know i was very lucky when i was taken in house from t.n.t we kept all pay and conditions but as it was saving at least 20% and the now tm likes a quite life
please keep us informed how it go’s with stobbies
and very good luck to you and all your workmates
Stobart will have the whole Tesco transport operation in the not too distant future. The writing has been on the wall for a long time. I’ll bet my house on it.
nothing wrong with stobbarts is there i thought they had firemen working for them a while ago ,going that extra mile you might say

Not sure how 25% more would be achievable? I’ve worked for Tescos at Crick, Hinkley and Middlewich and also Stobarts at Warrington and Crick. I was doing Tesco store deliveries in a Stobart truck nearly ten tears ago. Actually its just dawned on me how 25% more would be achievable !!
Tescos trucks (drivers) do (did) dedicated deliveries and return to base empty. There seems to have been more ‘backloads’ from suppliers in recent years. Having Stobarts do the transport enables the trucks to be utilised fully, i.e no empty runs back to the RDC, they can be chased off on other work, or conversley called in from other work to do Tescos deliveries or collect empty cages from stores.
I’d agree with alphamale66, Tesco drivers have been ■■■■ on from a great height… I’ve also sat waiting in Tescos for 4 hours before being given a run and the same with Stobarts. Funnily enough, i have just come back from the new Tesco RDC at Chesterfield which is run by Stobarts, at least the transport side of it is. Arrived at 11.30 am and departed at 17.10 with an empty 20foot container. Looks to me like their new efficiency is starting off just like it ever was .
Oh! One other thing. Stobarts do mainly packaging for bluechip food/drink producers (plastics/bottles/cans etc) which demands an immaculate trailer.
Tescos might have been able to get away with collecting fresh food in their trailers which are stinking of wet cardboard, rubbish etc… i would doubt if Stobarts will.

One for me, one for you…

They were probably wondering where their stuff had gone!

What are you like !!! Its standard practice, everything leaves Seaforth with half the amount on board !!

Ive thought that for some time, the state of them internally is disgraceful. If you came in with a trailer like the one
s ive had, with a supplier
s load on, Tesco would refuse to un-load it, H+S would have a field day…
But, its Ok for their drivers to slip and slide on the crap on the floor, I had a trailer swimming in Stella + Becks last week, it stunk…

Yes I wonder how many of Tesco’s customers realise that their fresh goods such as meat ,dairy, fruit etc has been delivered in a glorified dustcart. That is FACT. I have actually witnessed a rat running out of a trailer whilst in the re-cycling depot at Southampton. It is also fact that anyone else wishing to carry rubbish has to have a special licence. Not Tesco, they can carry contaminated rubbish in a food trailer !!
( And I hasten to add run trailers that has not been washed out for months)
Carrying the waste cardboard and things,is nothing new on supermarket work.
We used to do it at Somerfields as well, and yes,the trailers would get washed out occasionally, but I have to stress, occasionally. We used to have a double wash bay at Sherburn, and a guy to do it,but if you brought a trailer back, and it needed doing, then it would be your responsibility to put it on the wash bay after it was emptied, and you could either wait for it, (££££££ kerching.) or if you were in a hurry, leave it for the shunter to move it.
We got told that the reason we used to bring the rubbish back, was because it helped to pay for the running costs of the site, insofar as it then taken away by A.N Other waste disposal company from one site, rather than have a dozen of them scattered across our area, all charging different prices to collect from the stores.
Plus it also kept the enviromental brigade happy.
Ken.

They all do it ,as far as i know they get away with it because until its actually ‘proccessed’ or summat then its not classed as waste, even though we all know its been lying all over the yard being crawled over and ■■■■■■ on by rats as you say. Also most supermarkets, due to increased pressure on space for stock have it stored in ‘marqees’ in the rear yard totally unprotected from vermin. How the food hygene people let them get away with it i don’t know.
You are quite right Mike-c , outdoor marquees used to be just used at peak times and then only to store non food items, but now they are storing anythin they can get in them because the stores never have enough warehousing space, when the enviromental health visit the store just recieves a warning and carry`s on as before.
As for the state of the trailers a dustcart would be more hygenic than most supermarket trailers, they never get cleaned out from one month to the next,
they just load on top of the crap no matter how bad it is, the public would be very upset if they only knew
I spoke to a warehouse worker at W/Ton last week and he said ESL had got the contract for Tesco,s logistics (in total & not just M/Wich) and the Tesco,s drivers were far from happy and there were rumours (I stress only rumours) that some staff were vandalising Tesco equipment.
As some will know Tesco (Livingstone) were on this forum, talked about sometime ago and I said then that the time has come for Tesco to be very likely handing over the transport in total to 3rd party as everything that was happening at Livingstone was a repeat of what happened at Safeway where management tried and succeeded in changing the terms & condions of the depots concerned as it was purely a cost cutting exercise before the takeover by Morrisons.
With regards to TUPE this only lasts for a period of 12 months (unless regs have changed) and then the co. concerned can offer new contracts at a different wage structure but they can,t (as far as I know ) REDUCE your wages but they can give 90 days notice of a change in “terms & conditions” which is a back door way of reducing your earnings by removing things such as any extras like “bonus payments” which are not guaranteed payments unless it is in your contract and one “Legal” way they can change your terms is to “keep the co. financially viable” the co. must implement a reduction in pay “yours incidentally” and not the directors!
Again under TUPE regs as your job is still there you have no rights to redundancy or unfair dismissal until they try to change your terms and conditions then it becmes a legal minefield.
ESL have not got the whole tesco contract just the Middlewich dry grocery contract from March 9th.
Thanks for clarifying that story as it was one of ESL,s men that said it was the contract in total thet ESL,s had got.
But again is that the start of ESL,s getting the whole logistics in due course only time will tell.
Tesco drivers cost “Tossco” a lot of money in wages + the perks, all Tesco care about are profits. So if I was a Tesco employed driver at this time, I would start milking the job more than they normally do.
Not having a dig at the Tesco drivers, but, they do have it dam easy.(or did).
Maybe they should have stuck up for their counterparts in Livingston.
The drivers at Magor should start to worry, litchfield has taken a lot of runs away and if the Dc at Andover gets the go ahead then a hell of a lot more will be gone.
The days of big bucks for little work are long gone.

Where to start with this !! Lets just clarify something here before we start, The cages they unoad are heavy. If you do two store deliveries in a day you will ache all over, even if you tip your suspension down etc… Then unloading empties on, what could be easier? Well having five stacked together and sent up on a tail lift will test your ‘top half’ muscles to the full and not to mention your balance. They get about a tenner an hour, and they have (or most) a 37.5 hour contract. How is that big bucks for little work? You should really get to know some facts before you tell or opinionate this stuff, A Tesco driver doing his contracted hours will actually be on less the the national average wage. I peronally know a few guys who have been off work through being hit by cages rolling onto them, i’m not talking about no nancy boys either, i;'m talking about 18 stone guys who are pretty much with it.
The crying shame is that because we have people with a ■■■■■■■ job than they have got, people want to bring them down. The only good thing about there job is that they don;t have to do excessive hours.
i don;t like to mention this but ■■■■ it, its related !! On a forum not far from here a new Stobart driver that suggested Tescos drivers are lazy etc… and Stobarts was the way forward (he was in his first month!!). That was about six or more months ago. He has recently posted to say Stobarts won’t give him time off etc and a general derogatory air about Stobarts!! Well welcome to the real world !! Step forward one Fantasic Mister Fox !! Lets se if he’ll come here now and tell us how ■■■■ Tesco drivers are?
And BTW Wayne, if Tesco drivers have it easy what do you do that is so different and hard?
