i know they claim to save fuel and that may be true for trunking and other long journeys but when they are operated on local work do they really save fuel with all the low bridges that have to be diverted around which would not be necessary with a normal flat roofed trailer?

I just think they look wrong, and they are unnecessary, instead of trying to get the load as high as possible, they should be concentrating on getting the centre of gravity down, dare i say, like Europe do
Like that firm 2WIN?
it doesnt help when they put a high roof and a low door with a downward slope on the bed. great for using gravity to tip by pump truck, not so great for moving pallets of beer around as it is effectively on a high on flat ground. if i want that truck, i am stuck with those trailers. the actros pulls ambient, take the bad with the good or go back to shifts here there and everywhere

They do seem a little complicated but yes, and there are many others who use supercubes while keeping them under 4 metres high

We have got 4 of them, you do see an increase in mpg on a motorway run, but when we do a local run that are just the same as a normal trailer for mpg

Well they are not going to buy you a normal trailer for your local work when they have another one sat in the yard during the day doing nothing. That would probably cost more than the extra fuel used avoiding low bridges
drop 2 was blackridge on the A89 today. drop 3 was bellshill so the obvious route was follow the A89 as i was facing that way anyway. until i came across the 14’ bridge which i didnt know about until i was looking at it. that trailer is 4.28 metres which my phone says is 14.04…feet. luckily there was a road i could reverse into and turn round

fair point but a lot of trailers are brand new. chilled/freeze get flat roofed 13’9 but ambient get these. im assuming there are issues with the moveable partitions inside the reefers when they try and build them with teardrop bodies. almost the entire trailer is a 70/30 split with moveable internal walls instead of the usual front/rear division. im guessing that this is why they have stuck with traditional roofs as they send both to each shop. very few are tri-temp so ambient goes separately

I know nothing about fridges, so i wouldn’t hazard a guess. Is that a Hill Hire Merc in the pic. Used to have one just like it. Loved that truck!!!
Why bother when most companies dont even set there air kits up properly.

If you are pulling lots of different height trailers, adjusting the air kits constantly would probably become a proper pain in the ■■■■.

You seriously turned around because the marking on the trailer was .04 feet higher than the markings on a bridge?? My trailer has raised by that much after I’ve been for a crap
You’ll find that if that trailer had both markings on it, it’d have said 4.28m 14’
I’ve just looked at the bridge on google btw, it says 14’ or 4.3m…
it is a hill hire truck. they hired that and a stralis to take over 2 ambient runs which were being taken by norfolkline. obviously norforkline used their own trailers but i have been offered one of the runs long term. luckily i got the choice of truck so naturally i chose my favourite. i do like the actros hence i am trying to get a set of mats for it. they want the hired truck looked after so its generally one driver on each instead of the usual fleet volvo fms which do not have designated drivers. poverty spec fm or mid spec actros for a night out in elgin every sunday?

they dont tell you how high the trailer is on different units. most of the fleet are 4x2 fms which have a 1250mm fifth wheel height. i have a 6x2 actros so i am not chancing a low bridge. possibly over-cautious but the trailer says its higher than that bridge even if it is by a very small amount. if i chance it and get it wrong i havent got a defence. not worth it for the sake of a trip back to armadale on on to the M8

Its a 58 plate so it will be due to go back to Hill Hire soon wont it? No point spending money on mats cos its a Stralis or Premium you’ll end up with next. My old Actros is still floating about. Still see it regularly. I’d have it back in a minute. Can never understand why companies don’t keep the same drivers on the one truck. Its certain they will get looked after that way.

I take the same view to bridges when pulling a trailer with an Actros cos the 5th wheels are 1280mm on them. Better safe than sorry.

But it doesn’t, how can 4.28m be more than 4.3m■■?
the bridge sign said 14’ and the trailer said 4.28. i used the converter on my phone to discover the height is 14.04 so i set my height indicator to 14’1" which is higher than that indicated on the sign i was looking at, not that i was convinced of the accuracy of the sign anyway. plus it was a poor road surface so had i gone for it, all it would take is a bump and i would hear a crunch. not worth the risk!

Can you confirm that the link I posted is the same bridge, if it is, then it also says 4.3m.
