If I do get an interview, has anyone got any tips? Things I should/shouldn’t say/do? Do you think me being a girl will help or hinder me?

£8 an hour straight through and expectancy levels are ‘high’. Expect very long hours and don’t expect to be treated with much respect.

Left hand down!:
They’re all muppets. I remember when I did papers into Scunthorpe one night one of them was trying to back out and destroyed a stone lamp post with his trailer. The following night a different driver was there and he managed to blow out all 3 trailer tyres trying to reverse round a kerb. At another place in Wakefield, one of them decided to have a night out opposite the tight entrance to a 24hr print works thus preventing anything bigger than a van getting in or out without driving over the flower beds. The company were less than uninterested when phoned up asking what they were going to do about it so we took matters into our own hands and woke him up at 2am to get him to shift which was unsurprisingly met with a barrage of abuse as he apparently couldn’t see what the problem was.
If you don’t have a Stobrats depot nearby and want to see all the thick [zb] drivers in one place then Taylors Transport yard is where you want to be.
stories about fufweight wash yard as well

If your around notts and looking for class 1 work you should try the knowhow hub in Newark which is run by DHL. They are constantly recruiting and will take on anyone no matter of experience.

Being female could help, depends on the work. Wests have a very attractive young women pulling class one for them currently I see her driving about ilkeston every week. I saw a women pulling a flat the other day which surprised me as securing a load on a flat can be hard work and that’s not something I’ve seen much of females do in my working life

It’s hard for us to advise you here based on such limited information. I think if you post some pics of yourself here it will help us greatly to decide whether you being a girl with help or hinder your employment prospects.
I’m driving for these today, when I’m not covering driver holidays and sick cover to usually smaller firms, I can always get work thru QS agency, to Taylor’s. I find the agency good, pays correct holiday entitlement, monies always there when it’s supposed to be. I think a few of the comments are a little harsh.
Generally I find larger firms attract or at least can accommodate the worst of drivers. The apathy and work ethic that a lot of drivers have is a little to be desired, throwing tantrums, “iv got a good mind to go home etc etc” I think they forget their a smaller cog in a much larger drivetrain. Those that are good May get held on to by smaller firms or become the owner driver or eventually as big as Taylor’s.
But faced with driver excuses for damaging equipment or relations with customers, my general feeling is Taylor’s is forever swimming against the tide.
Whereas I, and any owner driver, has to do the job right, have the right mind set and basic skills to make an easy job go smooth, if we want work next week, do it right this week, it’s that simple.
So go for a job here, they’ve got them right now, see if you can resist joining the masses of moaners and groaners and everything is always an experience, as the saying goes, it hard to know how good something is until luv had the bad.
Cheeky bloomin sods!
not all girls are weaklings! Try hanging on to a tonne of horse everyday! In all seriousness, I know I am physically strong enough, but are employers gonna take one look at my application n think “Oh it’s a girl, she won’t be able to lift/move…”?
Not sure if this is my lack of confidence that is talking but I did feel as though I was let off a bit lightly during my driving and CPC test- only 2minors in the test and 100% on CPC?!? I don’t want preferential treatment, I want to be held to the same standards as every bugger else!
Left hand down, I forgot about the direct correlation between ones attractiveness and ability to drive! Doh! How could I be so stoopid??
Even if I were the most attractive female in the world, it wouldn’t do me much good if employers think guys are better for the job!
My last job was largely based on looks and I don’t want that anymore.
Mattwoodtransport, thanks for giving me the other side of the argument, I will bear what you’ve said in mind. Obviously I haven’t got a clue but you seem to be talking sense.
Bellydancer…I’m not sure whereabouts in Notts you are but if it’s not too far away you could try Canute Haulage - either Wilkinson’s contract at Manton Wood or general fleet at Gamston/Elkesley. They usually have driving jobs available & do have some rigids - though mostly artics. You never know - they were advertising not too long ago. And you are good to go as you have your DCPC card.
The pay, conditions & tackle are good to reasonable.
Good luck.

QS, Driver Hire, First Call, Rhodes Recruitment (Lincoln), The Recruitment Bureau, etc. They are all as bad as each other but the work is constant. You’ll most likely been doing multidrop if you’re Class 2 but its work and money. Plus since your agency you get paid by the hour so if it takes you 10 hours, happy days! Also, if you are doing agency don’t do anything that is not guaranteed 8 hours.

I don’t get this attitude.
Doesn’t matter whether you get the job based on your looks, people will always thing you did anyway.
Does it matter how you get / keep the job, as long as the job is right (for you) and the pay is right (for you), then stuff what others think and get on with the job.
As a new driver (more than a few years ago), I remember reversing onto a bay, and getting it slightly wrong but didn’t want to pull forward because everyone would know I’m a newbie, so made it difficult for myself by trying to recover a ■■■■ situation.
Now, time, experience and thick skin, I couldn’t give a ■■■■ if it took me 100 shunts, don’t care, nowt to prove - would have to have a laugh about it afterwards though
every driver starts as a newbie simple! and sometimes for whatever reason you will have one of them days when no matter how hard you try the thing wont go on 1st time

There’s no correlation between ones attractiveness and ones ability to drive… but there is a direct correlation between ones attractiveness and ones ability to get a job.
Still am… at the mo! Stilt walking, fire shows, you name it!
You guys make me chuckle!
Well… I’ve got my first job tomorrow, nervous doesn’t come close! Martyn Barrat Transport in Trowell, anybody know anything about them? Being a girl now but I haven’t got the foggiest what to wear!? Is jeans n a t-shirt acceptable for a temp?
They aren’t a very talkative bunch in the office that’s for sure
I’ve worked at far worse, what are you going in to drive?
They’ve been looking for a class one driver recently you could do worse for your first job, it’s monthly or 4 weekly pay on the books they’ve just had a pay rise not sure what it is but it was £7.42 p/h. That’ll be why they struggle to get drivers, the drivers were all sound when I went in over a couple of years in agency and I work with a couple of ex barratts lads now it’s only the money that was the reason folk leave.

Is that why you look like you do
Got it through an agency, only one day. I’m only class 2 so I hope it’s a rigid! But that’s about all I know :S
Jeans and tee shirt is fine, don’t forget steel toe caps and hi viz vest and gloves.
Drive in the gate park on the left somewhere everyone dumps the car where they can, walk into the main shutter door to the left(but not in the actual door you’ll see what I mean), follow the racking and go into the office door on the left its after the toilet, they used to have a doorbell they ignored as they assumed it was drivers taking the ■■■■
They’ll give you paper work and the reg and the keys used to be in the ignition waiting.
