Tattoos, do you have any? Your views on them RE work

I have 4 nothing visible with a long sleeve sweater though. Lots of facial piercings though and have never had trouble finding work.

I went to a tattoo show a couple of years ago and was introduced to this stunning looking goth type bird who was covered in piercings and tats. She had a big tattoo of a rose on her neck, clearly visible above her collar. She was a GP. Would it put you off if she was your quack?

I’m sure I could find something wrong with me that demanded a home visit :grimacing:

So, when looking to get a tattoo, how do you know the tattooist is any good??

She says I might suit one now…

Many will have their own web site or Facebook page where they display their work, so do some browsing of your local artists. You may have to travel a bit for one you really want. Mine is over 30 miles away, but the idea of going there initially was due to the recommendation of a friend. I’d seen the work he had done and was impressed by it, so I ‘liked’ the Facebook page and seen examples of more work. So I popped in and had a chat.

This is important. Discuss what you want before you make any appointment. An experienced artist could turn their hand to pretty much anything, but if you want something properly difficult like a portrait, you need to go to someone who specialises in this, and see examples of their work.

This brings me onto price. Talented artists need to feed and clothe themselves as well as charging what they think they’re worth, and run a studio which isn’t cheap these days. Recent new council regulations are very strict on hygiene, and proper equipment costs proper money, and that’s on top of the usual business rates. Mine charges £60 per hour or £300 for a full day which is 6 hours.

Now for the appointment itself. Be prepared to wait. A good artist has a very full diary. Mine’s next available Saturday is in May. Bit sooner if you can do a week day. I’m not saying they all have a waiting list that long, but you should realise it ain’t gonna happen next week. If you can get in the chair straight from walking in, then you should get up and walk straight back out again. Chances are your man isn’t Picasso.

Hope this helps!

I`ve got one on each arm which can easily be covered with long sleeves, I have also got HMS on my private bit, which reads Hammersmith when erect
