Tata Steel.

Tata Steel is cutting 900 jobs around the UK, including almost 600 jobs at plants in south Wales.

Most of the Welsh losses are management and administrative posts in Port Talbot, while sites in Crosskeys in Caerphilly county, and one near Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, will close.

Other job cuts include 155 in Yorkshire, 120 in the West Midlands and 30 on Teesside.

However, 120 jobs will created at a new hot strip rolling mill at Llanwern.

These restructuring proposals will help make our business more successful and sustainable, but the job losses are regrettable”
Shift levels at the company’s Rotherham and Hartlepool plants will be reduced to match production to lower demand for bar products and pipelines.

Tata, which employs 19,000 people in its UK steel business, also announced that it would restart one of two blast furnaces at Port Talbot early next year as part of a £250m investment programme.

This will also lead to the restarting of a hot strip mill at Tata’s site in Llanwern.

The company confirmed that the net effect in Wales of its announcement would be 584 fewer jobs.

Karl Kohler, chief executive of Tata Steel’s European operations, said: "Today’s proposals are part of a strategy to transform ourselves into an all-weather steel producer, capable of succeeding in difficult economic conditions.

If most of the 600 jobs going in South Wales are management and administrive i should think its about time :open_mouth:

Also sites in Crosskeys in Caerphilly county, and one near Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, will close.
Not so good for those workers.

There are also 11 process centres closing, 4 of which are in South Wales. Production, in part, will be moved to or combined with existing sites. On the upside there will be 120 jobs created in Llanwern next year.

are you on the steel kate

if so will it effect you

The government will say its fine because there are 24,567ive vacancies on their website for jobs , even though 24,560 are the same job advertised by different agencies and the other 7 are part time carers, were all in it together remember , mps know how hard it us for us mere mortals

sea frog:

I am…However, the depot I work out of is not one of the 11 listed for closure…

It’s bound to have an effect, but it’s too early to say quite what’s going to happen, …Fingers crossed eh ?

this will inevitably effect some haulage companies, i suspect that those involved around the heads of the valleys will be most affected.sadly it may well lead to the demise of some of the oldest names in welsh transport. only time will tell what the overall losses amount to but this is a massive setback for the steel industries

the 30 being finished on Teeside are extra workers that were taken on last year to complete a big order

The knock on effect from job losses by these big companies could be catastrophic.

Metal centre leeds will close within 6 months and the strip processing side will close within 16 months. All of my ex colleagues will be losing their jobs.

Sounds selfish but glad I left Tata when I did.

ASD must be ■■■■■■■ them selves

Hope all of the workers find something fast, unfortunately, this probably won’t happen.

Is that the one next door to ASD? I thought that closed a while ago

no I worked there and moved to old field lane, Worley when they shut stourton.

Old field lane was home to the lasers and strip processing, then the metal center opened when stourton closed, the the lasers were closed not both the MC and strip will be closing.

so that.ll just leave ASD left in Leeds then

Tata Steel staff get all they deserve lazy bone idle unionized health and safety gone mad idiots. If you have ever loaded from Scunny Rotherham Stockbridge Hartlepool Corby you will know what I mean

It’s hard to compete on the worldwide stage when a chap desperate for food in India will do the same job as a uk worker for a tuppence a day. Still hopefully this re structure will stabilise the rest of the jobs in the uk. No comfort to the lads that have lost their jobs though.

Sounds selfish but glad I left Tata when I did.

i left 2 1/2 yr ago after 22yrs , i,m on half the money but my life is so much better doing something i actually enjoy. i hope these people are fortunate enough to get back into work again elsewhere , theres only so much daytime telly a man can stand . re: bigt1979 i agree with your remarks regarding health and safety gone mad .but as for the “union” its only as strong as its members , and they are all frightened for theyre jobs , the 70,s have long gone.

From all the stories I was told when they reopened Redcar, it was only temporary (long-ish term - but still TEMORARY).

Everyone was kidding themselves that it was opening again ‘forever’. The media bigged it up so much it was ■■■■■■■ me off, no one could see the ‘bigger picture’. :imp:

No offence but, how many people out there went and got a mortgage, finance etc, thinking they’re set for life now?

I’m not a betting man, but this time I bet Redcar WILL follow in closure.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone, but heavy industry in this country is finished. I’d say due to fuel, taxes, and the 'environ-‘mentalists’.

As someone’s just said on here, you get yourself to India, do they give a **** about the environment? NO, they just want to feed themselves, and get on in life.

Ranting again…

not quite true, I was reading a story about a company near Panjim being fined for pollution a couple of weeks ago.
The MD claimed that the fine would close the plant.
India is developing quite a strong environment movement, albeit not on the euro scale yet.
Don’t know if the steel jobs woul go to India anyway as Tata seem to be keen on investing into China at present.

China or India? Either way,

Work’s not coming to the UK. :frowning:

All I’ve seen built round here recently are ‘Data storage facilities’ on the Silverlink near Wallsend/North Shields.

Big, black windowless ‘box’. :unamused:
