Tarmac Francishees

Im not looking for right now as i know things arent great but how and where can i/do i find out about a tarmac tipper franchise ?

Cheers

Adam

There used to be a link on their website to a page which told you all about it, and a phone number you could ring to get an information pack sent to you. I got one a couple of years back, I’ll go and fish it out and see if I can find a phone number on it for you…

Just found it, it doesn’t really help. I wold suggest you contact them via their website and ask for a pack.

Paul

Theres a Tarmac plant at Stanway in Colchester which has owner operator tipper drivers there, so not too far. I know because ive enquired about it before.

Aaron

With things getting quieter by the month overhere, We are thinking of moving to the uk as my Misus can get a transfer in her job no problem, and I have lived in England before and we are just weighing up a few options at the moment, and It’s either UK or Oz.
I am just wondering about these Tarmac Franchises, what are the pros and cons? Also Do you have to buy a certain spec wagon or will any Tar spec do? I have a volvo fm12 steel bodied tipper with insulated sides, roll over cover and chutes, would this do? Also does it have to be pained in their colours?
Thanks for any help and info.
Cheers
John

John have a look on Donedeal.ie under trucks, some guy looking for 8 wheel tippers on there, might be worth a look

Use the search function on here. Will tell you all you need to know.

If the thread that you find is over 1 year old, then take all the negatives and add a bit more. Good luck, you’ll need it.

You have to give them £6,000 for each vehicle you have if you are under contact to them. They hold this as an emergency fund,so they say. They earn interest on your money, very nice !!!

Dont forget to have the microchip installed (in you, not the truck) so that you get conditioned to their way of working! Also practice the blank facial expression in your mirror  as that also seems to be a condition of the job, and be pretty athletic so that you can jump as high as they ask you to!
You may have guessed that I am not a big fan of the company.

Pete.

a chap i do a bit of driving for has 5 tippers (not in tarmac but a sister companie)his newsest is 07 and he has just put an order in for a new 8wheeler to replace one of the older ones and does bloody well out of it. the advantage for him is he does 80% of the repairs himself. granted he has to work bloody HARD for it but if you want to do well in this life thats what you got to do. lots of people moan about the job till they are blue in the face but if its that bad why they still doing it?
in tippers especialy the asphalt side you either do well or you fold…depends how hard you are willing to work for it
but at the min its hard but if your wise and buy something a few years old to get started (not to old think with tarmac 7years old is the limit unless you can swing the contract in your favor to get started) you can do if you have your head screwed on :grimacing:

  • People are still doing the job because they are tied to it with long finance commitments etc. They also cling on to the blind faith that things will improve and, in addition, there are no other jobs available for them to do so they might as well carry on.
  • It doesn’t matter how hard you are willing to work for it, if the work isn’t there then there is bugger all you can do about it as the ‘contract’ guarantees you nothing.
  • How do you ‘swing the contract in you’re favour’? I’m keen to know.

To the OP, take a copy of the ‘contract’ to an independant business advisor. If he says ‘go for it’ I’ll eat my hat.

Someone once said to me that “the only way to get out of a Tarmac franchise is to die”. Obviously that’s not strictly true but the problem is that they push you into getting new wagons on finance and tie you in with 3 or 5 year contracts and for much of that time you have negative equity with the truck so you can’t get out without putting some of your own cash in.

Paul

A haulier this way wanted to pull one of his tippers out of the T-----c quarry, and was told “take it out and we will sue you”.So you aren’t far out Paul.
Cheers Dave.

what i mean about the contract is due to the current climate people are aloud to keep there trucks that bit longer and buy slightly older trucks and hualiers are aloud to go else were to rival quarries for loads if things are quiet but then again they dont drive for tarmac it may be there sister companie i’m talking about but its ran as a seperate entertie…
the guys that do put in the work are doing fairly well considering but those that moan and winge you find parked up at dinner then having to sell up  then there are the folk that no matter how hard they work they still making nothing but you dont know there situation

Thanks for all the info lads, So assume a 2005 tipper is too old? Also is it to be repainted in their colours? I’m ■■■■■■ if I’m changing my wagon just to get work. It’s like new and never misses a beat! The more I read the more I think it’s a no go :open_mouth:

I would say they wouldn’t be keen on an 05’ as a new contract. You would have to get it painted, at you’re own cost of course. If you own the wagon outright, you’d probably have to re-finance it through the company - they like you to be well on the hook.

Agreed. However, if you’re not replacing you’re equipment regularly then you’re going backwards.

Thats right but they have to be sure they won’t have any work for you before they allow you to go somewhere else. The basic fact is that if you’re a franchise haulier for one firm, you will do 99.9% of you’re work for that firm and barely ever do anything for anyone else.

The ‘franchise haulier’ system, no matter which firm it is, in designed very cleverly. They keep you interested, you rely on them for everything including work, fuel, finance etc, they keep you on the hook, they keep you laden down with finance etc. The simple fact is that people rarely go home early simply because they can’t.

Jeebus they really don’t take any chances! Re financing is not an option as paying for it once was bad enough!
Are all the other quarry/tarmac franchises more of less the same?
Once again thanks for the advice :sunglasses:
Cheers
John

Fair point hammer

The only other quarry’s are lafarge which soon they not gonna let you buy anything other than Renault
And basically your just an employee with all the overheads it’s like working for the gustap from what I’m told!!!
Other than that it’s MQP but they are midlands based they are a joint venture between Tarmac and Hanson not as strict as the above mentioned.
If you all ready have the truck haven’t you tried subbing for various quarry’s or firms?
