Hi kenhulmes I worked at Shepley 75 to 84/5 and new most drivers from most of the depots as well as the spanner men I am only in regular contact with one driver now but it is over 20 years ago and there were a lot of good guys worked there those are the only pictures I have of Shaws/Sykes waggons.

A bit of a contrast in tank sizes here with this early Trascontinental and Aussie FH.

And one stolen from Bubbs thread.

Do you know anything about the foden? it looks a bit odd.

Hi 8 legger, All I know about the Foden is they were only used as aircraft refuellers in the UK, and the cab top windows were just to give some extra vision when manouvering close to the wings. I don’t think any of the few built were ever taken out onto the road, but they would have made a terrific sleeper cab wouldn’t they. I 'd like to know myself what that cab extension area housed, can anyone else give us more knowledge.

A mobile filling station on an AEC MK5 Mammoth Major chassis.Started in 1964 by European Petroleum Distributors it was proposed to take petrol to the motorist at big race meetings.

The Foden refueller appears in a book I have on Foden’s history (same pic too) it was a tractor unit powered by a RR 210hp straight six and twelve speed Foden double underdrive gearbox and heavy duty dumper type rear axles with double reduction hubs. The pto was coupled to a hydraulic generator which powered two Pegson fuel pumps all mounted on the tractor (hence the big area behind the cab).
This was so the tractor could operate as a mobile fuel pipeline boosting unit for a future installation of a fuel pipeline and hydrant installation around the airfield. There must have been at least two built as it took two refuellers less than ten mins to fill up a Boeing 707 with 19,000 galls of fuel. The 12,000 gall trailers were built by Steel Barrel Co, Uxbridge using Carrimore running gear, there was no trailer subframe as the strength of the tank structure was capable of handling the low speed transit requirements. They must have performed well as further Foden vehicles were purchased on the impressive capabilities of these machines, British engineering at its best. Hope this sheds some light. Franky.

Not quite as grand as the other Foden aircraft refueler

Hi NZ JAMIE, That’s a nice pic mate, am I right in thinking that the tanker isn’t carrying dangerous goods?

That then makes me ask whether you NZ guys have a marking system that you have to put on tankers if they’re carrying dangerous goods?

Would it be possible for you to post pic(s) of such tanker(s) so that I can see what NZ tanker markings look like please??

We’re having a bit of a discussion on UK tanker markings in this topic:
What do these letters/numbers stand for then? - THE UK PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS FORUM (INTERACTIVE) - Trucknet UK

Cheers,
Dave.

G’day Diesel Dave,
Yeah mate we have DG markings on tankers carrying Dangers Goods,it must be a world wide standard,Petrol being ‘1203’. I’m not sure what the MAN is carting,it can’t be DG though as there is no placarding on the truck.
Found some fuel tankers for you mate,I reckon the Isusu is empty because the diamond sign on the front is blank and you supposed to turn them over when your empty,
but the Volvo should be loaded as the diamond is turned. As for the ERF,well you guess is as good as mine,It looks empty to me and it’s just come out of a workshop, but the diamond would indicate full.
Cheers Jamie,oh yeah all taken this year in Seaview,Lower Hutt
